  1. If JBJ truly has four teams sniffing around him then he's unlikely to have to settle for the part-timer/defensive specialist role I'm envisioning for him as a NYM. On the other hand, he's not a terrible hitter -- .247/.331/.438 (101 OPS+) from 2015 thru 2020 is more than fine for an elite glove at that position -- and mixing four guys into three positions (closer to 3-1/2 really with the occasional DH slot and Dom spelling Pete at 1B) can be worked out, although you do create the issue of trying to platoon four lefty bats.
  2. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Yeah I love how he starts off saying the Hall of Fame folks have been "kind and generous" and it ends with but your opinions don't matter and you don't know how to judge a player. Well his "kind and generous" is directed towards those who run the HoF. His issue is with those writers/gatekeepers whom he feels have slandered him or otherwise done him wrong.
  3. That doesn't read like a tantrum to me.
  4. And has several teams looking to sign him (or at least contemplating doing so). THAT, more than anything, is what leads to longer deals.
  5. Mets "have continued talks in recent days" with JBJ https://nypost.com/2021/01/26/mets-in-talks-with-jackie-bradley-jr-after-george-springer-miss/acc to the Puma BoSox, SFG, and the Astros also said to be interested.
  6. =MFS62 post_id=54853 time=1611696620 user_id=60]... some stories say nobody will be elected this year.
  7. Yanx trade four prospects for two years of Pirates hurler, and former #2 overall draft pick (2010), Jameson Taillon Taillon didn't pitch in 2020
  8. Yeah, I'm not nearly as down on the idea of Bauer as many of the rest of you. He's a bit unorthodox, but he's also smart, he's competitive, and he's good. And while talking trash to folks on Twitter isn't my cup of tea, I also don't read Twitter so (within reason) it's unlikely to bother me. Besides, isn't that why Twitter was invented, to talk stupid to folks?

It's also up to Cohen and his accountants whether or not to set the budget at $90M, as it would be up to the owner of any baseball team and his accountants whether or not to set the budget at $90M. Or $200M. Or $250M I hope for the team to be well run both on and off the field. That's not the same thing as rooting for the payroll of the 25-man roster to be at of above any specific number.
  10. That's assuming that the luxury tax was the reason for no Springer signing. Maybe it was just that Steve & Sandy thought a player turning 32 this year was worth a $125 million risk over the next six years but not worth $150 There is always a price at which you need to be willing to walk away. As far as the luxury tax itself goes, I personally have zero rooting interest in whether Uncle Stevie chooses to go over it or not. That's up to him and his accountants.
  11. =G-Fafif post_id=54624 time=1611359228 user_id=55] Art Howe pulled through.
  12. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=54604 time=1611341720 user_id=68] Aaron and Seaver were close friends.
  13. I remember his slow walk to the plate almost dragging his bat; the quiet body language which, when combined with those droopy, almost sleepy looking, eyes led you to believe he was only partially awake. He'd deliberately plant his back foot, and then his front, and then do a single cough/throat clear (Tim McCarver relayed that part) and then never leave the box until required to. So while Willie Stargell had all that bulk and kinetic energy in his set-up, and McCovey had the classic trim-hipped, wide-shouldered build, the only hint of menace from Aaron came if you got a glimpse of the set of wrists and forearms which he obviously swiped off some career longshoreman back in Mobile Bay somewhere. And then came that whip-fast swing ... one which never seemed to desert him and nor did his body which allowed him to play nearly every day for nearly a quarter century and rack up all those numbers.
  14. =metsmarathon post_id=54584 time=1611329133 user_id=83] um.... ok, stretching, and poking around on wikipedia... how about william wheaton

Chad ochoseis wrote: What I've said is that I've seen Nimmo play and although it's clear he's not the second coming of Carlos Beltran, I don't see the same pathetic skills of, say, Daniel Murphy in left field (or even second base). I'm no baseball expert; I never even played Little League. So I may be wrong. "Pathetic" is too strong a word for it but, yeah, there have been enough balls that Nimmo hasn't reached that I believe most CFs would have gotten to most of the time. It's not bad athletics but more just the occasional bad route, bad jump, of missed first steps in a position where you'd want to put your guy who's the best in that kind of stuff. Ideally Nimmo is a LF'er (he also has an LF's arm) but less than ideally he's often had an even-less-good fielder already over there (Dom, JDD, McNeil) so that's not an option. Can you live with his defense in CF? ... yeah, if he's putting up near-.400 OBAs. Signing Springer would have allowed him to move over but then someone loses time in the shuffle. Almora or JBJ have been starters during parts of their careers but (barring injuries) don't figure to be that here. It becomes just a different way to fill the same hole: much less offense than Springer but off-set by a better (part-time) glove and significantly more ABs for Dom/Nimmo/Davis and without the fear of hitching yourself to an expensive six year deal where you wind up paying someone in his 30s based on the production he gave some other team while in his 20s And, yeah, even the most ardent stat hounds acknowledge the less than exact nature of defensive metrics. They're getting there but are still less dependable than what we've come to expect from those on the offensive side of the game.
  16. Like Buddy Young Jr. [FIMG=250]http://www.needcoffee.com/html/dvd/images/msnight0.jpg[/FIMG]
  17. If you sign a JBJ or Almora type it would be with the idea that he'd be a part timer/defensive replacement which would allow both Nimmo and Dom to get their ABs in where as one or both would have lost time if Springer signed. And, make no mistake, the defense you'd get from Cain/Almora/Bradley will be far above whatever you'd get from Nimmo OR Springer. One of those guys wouldn't really be a replacement for Springer,, more like a different approach to filling the same hole.
  18. Turned into a reasonably good announcer too after his playing days were up. Did Braves games for a while then seemed to float around after that. No frills, but solid.
  19. I've been drunk and stupid since 1987 and still managed to not send photos of my boner to anyone. There haven't even been any close calls. And this is ME we're talking about. No means no, dude. This should be the standard going forward for situations like this. Boss: "You're fired" Cad: "But why?" Boss: "Because you did something even FMan wouldn't do!"
  20. MLB.com's J P Morosi suggests that Springer's decision could come this week (which I suppose means it also could come next week, or in August) with the Mets & Jays still considered the favorites to land him with maybe the Jays thought to be the more aggressive of the two due to them so far missing out on all their other attempts as opposed to the Mets who have previously landed McCann & Lindor.

  22. Mainly what Martinez does is tees up LHPs ... while not being horrible vs RHPs either 283/347/418//765 career vs RHP 307/382/534//915 career vs LHP Now virtually all of that came from 2017 and 2018 so it remains to be seen what he has left (tho is only 32 y/o) but even Scott Hairston didn't have those kinds of numbers vs LHPs during his two seasons as a NYM and I remember his tenure in Queens as a guy seemingly put on this earth for the sole purpose of abusing southpaws.

  24. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Well this thread was anti-climactic. Yeah, but maybe it will wind up with a happy ending.
  25. Wow indeed. There was talk about the two sides being far apart early on so six years for a guy you'll turn 33 mid-season will be seen as the Yanx blinking most likely, particularly since he's already begun transitioning from middle IF to corner IF. Also maybe a case of buying high, his 2020 OPS was a full 100 points higher than any other single season and only two of his previous years were within 200 points of that mark which is saying a lot when all those other (six full) seasons were played at Coors Field.
