  3. Could be either. Readers send in stuff all time to him (I've done so) and he always credits those if/when he uses a line sent in. Not sure if this is the first time he's used this particular phrase.
  4. From the, 'Why didn't one of us think of this?' file, Phil Mushnick is referring to the designated man on 2nd/extra inning runner as the 'Manfred Man'
  5. =Ceetar post_id=60199 time=1617926485 user_id=102] Also if interest, because I've seen this called wrong: A batter is out WHEN (f) He attempts to hit a third strike and the ball touches him; I've definitely seen (Duda I think) players called out for accidentally swinging while dodging when it was a ball, which does NOT qualify for this.

  8. =bmfc1 post_id=60182 time=1617919948 user_id=73] HP Umpire Ron Kulpa said that he was culpable. Because it was a strike, Conforto getting hit was irrelevant and he should have called it that way.
  9. I expect Conforto to deny everything despite the Zabruder film examinations to follow. Who, Moi?

No in that they can't use replay to interpret a judgement call like intent. Umps or ump? Can the third-base ump or crüe chief over-rule the home plate guy there, or is he on his own?
  11. Don's got a gripe, here. Well, yes and no. Yes in that the umps should have called it. No in that they can't use replay to interpret a judgement call like intent. And that's just one more flaw of replay use; that once you dip your toe into it, the trend towards feeling that EVERY call should be reviewed marches steadily on until the whole idea of "limited replay", which is what sold the idea in the first place, gets erased. On the play itself, that call has been under-called for years if not decades ... so I don't feel too dirty winning the game via one. Chase Utley and Craig Biggio were the worst offenders, but they had plenty of company. oe: it could have been worse I suppose, he could have taken a page out of Jacoby Ellsbury's book and simply aimed for the catcher's glove with his swing and gotten on that way. Ellsbury led the league in those for several years running and almost all of them just happened to come with 2 strikes on him.

  14. =LWFS post_id=60122 time=1617913086 user_id=84] QUITE the bat flip, as well.
  15. So basically we've had one inning of offense so far this season.
  16. And now here's Trevor May playing the part of Buzz Aldrin
  17. I think the ghost of Neil Armstrong is going to be passes that Miguel Castro is stealing his nickname of First Man since MC seems to always be the first man up these days.
  18. 3 innings/34 pitches for the hurler formerly known as Formosa
  19. Took the day off -- Check Nice 20 mile morning bike ride -- Check Lunch of Burgers & Fries on the stove -- Check NYM Home Opener - Comin' right up!!
  20. The one thing I don't like about bugs is when the operator tries to update the bases-on situation as the play is going on. A double into the corner with a runner on 1st starts morphing into 1st & 2nd and and then 2nd & 3rd but if you glance at it you're libel to be momentarily confused as to whether that was the condition at the start of the AB or a (very) temporarily live update which is going to change again in the next few seconds.
  21. (I can write obtuse thread titles, too!) I like it! 'Bugs', to me, are fine and I don't get too interested in analyzing the aesthetics of each -- it's the creepy crawlies I don't like. The problem with the crawl is that it's constantly moving and therefore distracting even when you try to ignore it. If I'm watching a baseball game I don't need the results of some WNBA game flashing across my screen every five minutes. As usual, ESPN leads the race to the bottom on this; it's the one time they actually try to be the 'Leader in Sports' so their crawl includes Everything, but mostly it features what will be coming up on their network(s) later that day or week. So while it's bad enough to have having the results of a UFC fight intruding on your set, having what amounts to an advertisement for the latest version of a human cockfighting "championship" three weeks hence (available on ESPN's pay tier of course) is even worse. And, hey, the first college football game (and guess where you can see that?) is only 100 day away!!!! And, yes, we're going to maintain this countdown every day for the next three-plus months!
  22. 2/3 of the game in the books and we're not even at the three hour mark yet!
  23. I'm starting to feel a bit pessimistic about this game.
