  1. Cosell seemed to tell a bunch of funeral stories ... particularly ones that just happened to place himself either at or near the center of the action.
  2. The main point on this type of discussion is how highly to reward/award Valdespin for the GS over and above what you would have if he won the game with "only" a 1B, or SacFly or GR 2B (not possible in that case for him to get a regular 2B or 3B) or even simply beating out a GiDP? There are arguments to be made either way. me.t.b.o.t. makes his own but he's incapable of doing anything other than what he's programmed to do. I'm tempted (haven't voted yet) to give him a bit more because it was a GS but, as JCL says, it's not the same as the Stevie Henderson game where a HR and only a HR would have won it.
  3. Why do I think that FMan will have a somewhat different definition of "selfie"?

  5. My early impressions of Ryu is that there are a couple things he doesn't miss often 1) the strike zone 2) meals
  6. Nymr83 wrote: First extra innings grand slam since the grand single? Yes, except that that one isn't considered to be a GS. Gary says it's the first walk-off (not necc extra innings) GS since Kevin McR in [crossout]1993[/crossout] 1991
  7. I don't think English or Spanish speakers can understand him right now
  8. Valdy up and then the pitcher's spot, right? Cowgill I assume. That's why you can't run for Buck
  9. Kong76 wrote: Stupid may be strong, not a fan of running out of an inning. If we were still behind I wouldn't have liked it. But already tied with a good base-runner out there ... And we still got Buck to lead off the inning. He can hit his GW homer now if he wants.
  10. If Kershaw were to grow his hair out a bit (and then never comb it) he could play the lead in THE TOM WAITS STORY
  11. I don't mind the steal attempt there, successful and you go from needing a HR to needing a single. Wright just picked a bad time to get his first CS of the year.
  12. Man that was a gutsy move taking 2nd on that.
  13. It would really suck to waste this rare instance of good penning we're getting tonight and also get held to two runs by a pitcher who hasn't pitched in nearly a year. Gotta punch through here.
  14. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: LaRoche isn't hitting Mets not included. Eh, he was 2-fer-9 in that series. Unfortunate for us that one of those two was a 3R HR (one of only 4 XBHs for him this season) Nats not getting a rest anytime in the near future as they have back-to-back four-game series vs Reds (home) then at Braves
  15. Say hello to your now sub-.500 (10-11) Nats. StL just completed the sweep and that's now 4 losses in a row and 9 of their last 12 Scored just 2 runs today and, during these 12 games, they've scored two or fewer eight times. I still think this team is going to be more than OK, but what looked to be a team without a weakness is starting to show some cracks: - 3 1st inning runs vs Strasburg today and, while he hasn't pitched as bad as his record says, 1-4 can't be described as good - 5th starter (although 1st in salary) Dan Haren has been either mediocre or just plain lousy in his outings - and Gio Gonzalez is looking a bit more like the guy with occasional control/pitch-count problems that he was in Oakland (and last October) than the near-CY hurler he was for almost all of 2012 - bullpen's been shaky other than Soriano - defense, particularly SS & 3B, isn't what they hoped - LaRoche isn't hitting and was sat today after K-ing four times last night and leaving a small army of runners stranded - half their catching tandem (Ramos) is hurt again
  16. Gee - 2.5 Hawkins - 0.3 Rice - 0.8 Lyon - 0.8 Parnell - 0.9 Buck - 2.0 Baxter - 1.4 Wright - 0.4 Davis - 0.5 Duda - 0.4
  17. Atchison - 0.4 Hawkins - 0.4 Lyon - 0.5 Murphy - 1.5 Turner - 1.0 Wright - 1.2 Duda - 0.5 Cowgill - 1.3 Buck - 1.2 Byrd - 1.0

Now both are spent and there's still four innings (or more) to get through. OK, so it turns out Lagares was hitting for someone else and not Atchinson so my above point is less apt, but Carson had still retired 6 of 7 prior to being yanked and had 2-out and none-on.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: Murphy is playing some great baseball. One debate that hasn't even come up lately is the whole 'can Murph hack it at 2B?' question. That one has kind of quietly been answered in the affirmative. I don't know that he'll ever be great there, but he's certainly been good enough and if this offensive start is going to be something like his norm than he'll be more than good enough.

  22. Not that it matters for this series, but Chad Billingsley's elbow pain is to be solved by a little thing I like to call Tommy John surgery. Needless to say, he's out for the year.
  23. I'm reminded of Mickey Ward's [Mark Wahlberg] pack of sisters and half-sisters in THE FIGHTER carping at what they saw as interference by his new girlfriend [Amy Adams] into "their" family business (ie. his boxing career). "It's that damn MTV girl"
  24. My lone memory is of the last time he pitched, looking like he wanted no part of the left-handed hitting batters he was facing; everything was away, awayer, and awayest which showed no CAHNfidence by him at all and in turn installed zero CAHNfidence in me. That he was once a Yanqui is probably put cooties on him in the first place.
  25. I just listened to about a 1/2 hour of Francesa (for maybe the first time in maybe a year or so) and he was all down on Twitter, like it's going to be the ruination of the nation. Mainly he seemed to be exorcised over Kobe's in-game Tweeting but there was also something about a Tweeted threat somewhere; 'Man, they gotta do something about Twitter' he says, without specifying who 'They' or what 'Something' might be. I'm afraid this cat fight may just add fuel to his fire; we just can't have minor league ballplayers distracted like this.
