Besides, when Backman hit .320 in '86 his top of the lineup contributions were a key piece. But the following season when his OBP fell 80 points to barely .300 his "catalyst" magic wasn't quite as effective.
  2. Also, what's the point in putting up a short-term solution type of manager (assuming, for purposes of the argument that that's what Backman is) to lead a team that most assume is not in a quick-fix type of situation?

  5. Edgy MD wrote: I adore tack-on runs. They are the key to the universe and all that is good comes from them. And often they are necessary ... like now. The good news is we still have a one-run lead. The bad news is that the team with a one-run lead heading into the 9th inning has lost three times in five Mets/Marlins games this season.
  6. Nice to see that they finally decided to break out of the one-hit-per-inning club. Looked like it was going to continue for a while there after Wright's leadoff 2B was followed by outs by Buck & Duda, but then the three straight hits by Ike, Byrd & 'Speen turned everything around. Then, they decided they liked that so much that they're doing it again in the 7th. Mr. Hand in to pitch.
  7. CAN WE GET JUAN PIEERE OUT JUST ONCE SOMETIME THIS FUCKING CENTURY?
  8. Murph gets picked off with 2 out and Wright at the plate. They've now gone from merely incompetent to stupid and incompetent.
  9. Marlins with an insurmountable lead.
  10. Niese - 2.8 Tejada - 2.0 Wright - 1.0 Parnell - 0.2
  11. Familia - 1.5 Edgin - 0.8 Tejada - 0.4 Wright - 0.4 Turner - 0.4
  12. Hefner - 4.5 Duda - 0.5 Murphy - 0.5 Recker - 0.3 Davis - 0.2
  13. At the first passed ball I knew the game was lost. At the second one the TV was off before the ball was halfway to the backstop.

  15. I don't care what the score is after this next half-inning, Hefner has to at least be allowed to start the bottom of the 9th. At this time last night the game was just starting the 6th inning. And, as it turned out, there was still a full nine yet to play.
  16. Hefner's given up 1 run on 6 hits over his last 13 innings pitched.

I had plenty of faults and character flaws, but being fake was never one of them. I was proud of that. Exactly what a closeted gay man deeply in denial would say!
  18. The one walk part might be the best sign there.
  19. We're not hitting tonight at a much faster pace than we were not hitting last night.
  20. The main difference between his start and Gooden's is the age. That said, and as Grimm notes, I don't want him to be Dwight Gooden. So far I'm liking him as Matt Harvey quite nicely and, as Curt Schilling and others have pondered, is there one current pitcher you'd trade him for straight up right now?
  21. In a losing clubhouse, at least, extracurricular activity is cause for suspicion, and, shortly before the Mets traded Dickey, last December, a column appeared in the Post accusing him of being a glory hound. I didn't know JCL wrote for the Post
  22. Opts for FA-gency rather than accept a demotion from Toronto
  23. He looks older than 23 in that there picture. NYM pitchers had kept Stanton in check through the first four meetings this season but you don't figure that was going to last forever. Still, the thought of this Ozuna guy stepping in and being an improvement for the Fish is tough to ignore.
  24. Giancarlo Stanton (pulled hammy in the 10th inning) and Joe Mahoney (previously injured and held out of Monday's game) have both been DL'd by the Marlins. Called up in their place are OF Marvell Ozuna and LHP Brad Hand. The 22 y/o RH-hitting Ozuna has been smokin' it at AA Jacksonville Hand, 23, has been a starter both last year and this at AAA New Orleans
