  1. Various questions: - Angel was the crew chief but also the 2nd base ump for the night and therefore the one who made the original call, correct? - Could he be sticking to his first call so as to not reverse himself as in some sort of childish attempt to not look wrong in the first place? - Would the other umps go along with such crockery? - a new kind of long blue line so to speak? - Can MLB itself get some of these answers even if the press and we can't?
  2. The Brett/pine-tar thing was an interpretation of a rule as opposed to this which is merely judgement. BAD judgement perhaps (OK definitely) but judgement none the less. I don't think there's any way that Selig et al call for the game to be replayed from that point.
  3. 1) How da fuck can they blow that one? 2) well at least this didn't occur with two outs in the 9th inning of a one-run game or anything ... oh wait! 3) Perez went on to load the bases ... but got the 3rd out with the save preserved 4) This example points out two things about replay that proponents of expanding it to cover more and more things generally fail to acknowledge a) that "obvious" mistakes are always corrected that time limits on how long reviews are supposed to take are enforced or enforceable
  4. BoSox temporarily "remedied" their bullpen woes this week by installing recently called-up pitcher Allen Webster as a starter and moving Felix Doubront to the suddenly depleted bullpen. So Webster starts last night against the Twins and promptly gives up Four in the top of the 1st. No worries though as the Sox come back with Five in their half of the frame. Except that Webster--relieved by Doubront halfway through--combine to cough up Seven runs in the 2nd on the way to a 15-8 Sox loss. Doubront took the bullet for the team staying in through the 7th allowing runs 12, 13 & 14 along the way. So maybe they need a 'Plan B' Seriously though, I don't think Boston is going to see Frank-Frank as a solution - even if he was ready which he's not. A mid-season deal from here to ... well, wherever is a more likely scenario after he's (hopefully) proven to be healthy. Gotta remember though that he's got a high price-tag on his butt meaning the return haul isn't going to be much or it's going to be for someone else's bloated contract. I can't see much in the way of decent prospects coming back.
  5. Only appropriate that it ends on a K

Buck is OBPing at 280 and dropping. Problem is that this lineup consists of Wright plus seven different seven-hole hitters - and it doesn't even matter which platoon guys are in as they're all seven hitters.
  7. Y'know, I only started this IGT out of emergency duty having forgotten that about two weeks ago I banned myself from starting them for at least a month because we kept playing shitty whenever I did. So this game is all my fault ... and the fault of whoever was supposed to start the IGT. And of course the sucky offense.
  8. Trying for 2 wins in a row, the fourth win out of the last five games, AND [u:2d3r3aug]the 2nd game played in a row[/u:2d3r3aug] for the first time since last Tues/Wed Hefner vs Peavy
  9. The hell with the individual players, this seems to be all we need to know: R/G - last in AL: 3.35/G Team BA - last in AL: .223 Team OBA - last in AL (by 30 points): [u:4am5tq5l].276[/u:4am5tq5l] Team SLG 0 2nd last in AL: .368 (.002 ahead of Minnesota) OPS+ = 70 - last in AL BBs - last in AL Ks - 5th most in AL Hell, after seeing this chart I'm starting to think that Harvey really isn't all that good. Of course we have to score too at some point.
  10. Harvey - 6.0 Baxter - 1.5 Parnell - 1.0 Lagares - 0.5 Wright - 0.3 Davis - 0.7
  11. Atchison - 0.4 Wright - 2.0 Duda - 1.0 Baxter - 1.0

As long as they don't turn over their entire roster between now and next week I think we're going to be OK here. Their former closer Jason Motte just had TJ surgery and obviously won't be around for this series.
  13. I think it's going to vary among infielders as to which is better. I always thought that while the slide-plant worked great for the 5' 9"-ish gymnastically-athletic Ordonez, the jump-throw tends to favor the taller types with more leverage who most likely can't get up and down as quickly. There's no doubt in my mind that Rey would have thrown out Rios there, probably Reyes as well although he would have done neither the jump nor the slide but would have just planted and made up the time with his quicker release and stronger arm. Ruben seemed to make up his mind to do the jump-throw ahead of time probably for lack of confidence in any other move but almost had to slow up in order to get the timing right first and lost fractions in doing so.
  14. And the Rox closing out the Yanx at Coors (2-0 is your final thankyouverymuch) makes this a Mets - Islanders - Knicks - non-Yanx QH night. Throw in the Braves losing via 2 9th inning HRs off Kimbrel and it goes from QH to ... well, still QH, but now it's QUINTuple Happiness.
  15. Also nothing wrong with a 10 inning game clocking in at 2 hours 30 minutes

  19. Matt is bloody good so far -- although as much as I'd like to see a perfect game I don't want to have to need one.

  21. LA Dodger Pitchers at bat to date this season: .157/.204/.255 LA Dodger 3B-men at bat to date this season: .162/.262/.189 Of course that's more an indictment of their 3rd-sackers than it is in praise of their pitchers, but still. How often does yesterday's starter suit up for today's game? Is it a requirement? They just threw 120 pitches, no sane team would allow him to pitch in the next game, so what does it accomplish to require him to be there? - Suit up, as in in uniform? ... all the time; can't be in the dugout otherwise. Probably isn't wearing spikes and cups however. - A requirement? -- no, but almost no one would simply give the pitcher a day off to go shopping or whatever; bad for team unity and all that. There was the case of Roger Clemens late in his career getting entire road trips off if he wasn't scheduled to pitch, but he was already bad for team unity. - Non working starters used to chart the pitches although I don't think they do that anymore. Usually it was the next day hurler although some teams gave that job to the previous day's guy.

Main thing that's keeping Plawecki from getting major prospects raves is that he's doing it as a 22 y/o in Low-A ball coming off middle of the pack stats in short-season ball. Not sure how he rates glove-wise as a catcher* but if he keeps hitting like he is [.416/.470/.733 -- 22 of his 42 hits for XBs] you'd like to see him bumped up to PSL by mid-season at the latest. * caught 19 games so far this year, DH'd in 7
  23. Zvon wrote: I saw portions of this game and how was there not one error called on the Mets? BJ Upton's "hit" off Wright's glove was a joke of a call - although the one off Tejada's leather was more understandable And Duda's adventure was one of those where he never got close enough to it to get into 'Error' territory even though that was a catchable ball Throw in a couple of PBs/WPs and it was a real sloppy all-around game even with no official E's Probably could have flagged Byrd for playing a 2B into a 3B early on as well.
  24. vtmet wrote: remind me the logic why our Ace is going to be pitching on 7 days rest so that Niese the WHIP machine pitched today Because you don't start tinkering with the pitching order, particularly not in early May, so that one guy with 16 ML games under his belt and never more than 160 IP in any one year takes his regular spot while others, including your opening day starter, sit for ten days or more. Blame the off days and the rain-outs here, not bad decision making. ...10 combined walks/hits with less than 3 innings (even walking the pitcher)...There's a reason why Niese has a career 1.4 WHIP.... 1.36 career actually, and coming off a season of 1.17 (w/3.40 ERA) when he began to show front of the rotation command. Harvey had a much better month, that doesn't add up to bumping in the rotation territory.
