  1. I'll take the two September series against the Nationals.
  2. I love the All-Star game but the combination of a) no Mets starters and hours of fawning over YS, will make it a tough watch. Also, MFY fans have no class and will boo Wagner and Wright. Still, we need the NL to win so the Mets will have home-field advantage in the WS.
  3. After last night's game, a reporter asked David Wright if any of his teammates said anything to him about the day off after either of his homerruns. Wright said "I can't really think of anything. We don't have a very smart team to begin with. So... for them to think of something quick like that, I don't think is possible." Lots of laughs from the reporters and it was nice to hear David Wright relaxed. I'm just surprised that The Post's headline today wasn't: "Wright Calls Teammates Stupid"
  4. AG/DC: that is true, but I find the relationship between the two to be fascinating. The fact that Tim forgave Tug, and was there for the last years of his life, is a wonderful story. It would be nice if Tim was there tonight, too, schedule permitting. This is from [u:k42ys6vy]Esquire[/u:k42ys6vy], January 2006, "Who the Hell is Tim McGraw?" "The founding legend of Tim McGraw is one of the great contemporary American stories: He is born in Delhi, Louisiana, on May 1, 1967, and spends his childhood as Timmy Smith, believing Horace Smith to be his biological father. When he's eleven, he finds his birth certificate in a closet. It says his name is Samuel Timothy McGraw. He confronts his mom, Betty, who has recently divorced Horace. She fesses up. Tim's real daddy is Tug McGraw, the famous big-league pitcher--formerly a Met, now a Phillie--who's as famous for his party-guy persona as he is for his screwball. (Tug once told a reporter, "Ninety percent of the money I've earned in baseball I've invested in women, cars, parties, and booze. The other 10 percent I wasted.") Betty contacts Tug and arranges a meeting in Houston, the closest city with a National League team. Tug is friendly to Tim but refuses to acknowledge that he's the boy's father. Tim goes home and changes his name to Tim McGraw anyway. About a year later, another meeting is arranged, also in Houston. But this time, Tug goes out of his way to be an asshole. He lets Tim come down to the dugout but blows off Betty's invitation to see them later. Tim goes home and changes his name back to Tim Smith. More than five years pass, during which Tim sends letters and leaves messages. Tug answers none of the letters; he returns none of the calls. Tim's a teenager now, and he's pissed. In his senior year of high school, he decides he wants to go to college and that, goddammit, his rich father ought to help pay for it. So for the first time ever, Betty asks Tug for money. Tug agrees, on the condition that they sign a contract stipulating that a) neither Tim nor Betty can ever contact him again, and Tim can't ever use the name McGraw. Tim counters, saying he'll accept those terms only if Tug grants him one last meeting. When Tug shows up in Houston with his lawyer, he takes one look at this six-foot-tall, seventeen-year-old kid and realizes, at long last, that Tim is his son. Tug can't do it. He tears up the contract. And the healing begins."
  5. The Press Notes say that tonight's honoree is Mark McGraw, Tug's son. What about Tim?

    MLB Umpires

I only remember umpires that I dislike: Gary Darling Angel Hernandez CB Bucknor and now, Brian Runge. And the ump that called my son out on a pitch 6 inches outside of the strike zone last night. That guy, too.
  7. Moron Hubbuch is not backing down even in the face of national ridicule. He goes after Olbermann (par for the course at The Post) and then Adam Rubin. Must have been an interesting night in the Shea press box: http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/mets/archives/2008/06/im_only_the_thi.html#more "Here's the bottom line for Olbermann, the radio and blogger blowhards, one of my gutless, sycophantic counterparts (yeah, I'm talking about you, Adam) and all the cranks that have been filling my inbox with e-mails I never read and automatically delete...."
  8. I just got back after watching my son's summer team lose to fall to 0-6-2... what happened to Beltran?
  9. ="AG/DC"]I'm looking forward to learning the meaning behind OllieOwned's post. Maybe it's half of a tribute to G-FAFIF's website and goes with this picture:
  10. Another Letterman monologue joke from last week (the quote is as accurate as I remember; I don't have a transcript): "Beautiful day in New York. It was so nice that the Mets were firing managers in the daylight."
  11. I started to listen "live" then shut it off when the show lead with the MFYs. The Podcast downloaded after the show was over and I was able to skip the MFY segment. The rest of the show was interesting and well done. I hate when the unlimited time of Podcasts are used as an excuse to ramble on about personal stuff (e.g. Matthew Berry's ESPN Fantasy Podcasts).
  12. ="soupcan"]Do you know for certain that Manuel is African American? I assumed Latino because of his name and because this is the first time I've heard him being referenced as the second black NYC manager. From what I understand, he's as Hispanic as the Phillies manager.
  13. Adam Rubin politely tells us that Hubbuch is a dope: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/ "Apparently managers cant attempt to be intellectual without risk of someone trying to make a big deal about it. Trust me, Jerry Manuel wasnt saying anything disparaging about fans when he used the word fertilizer before Sundays game." If I didn't like Phil Mushnick so much, I would ignore The [u:077b356776]NY Post [/u:077b356776]forever.
  14. I saw this KTE at the top of the threads and thought that the Mets were playing the Rockies again. It sure seems that way.
  15. According to this edition, the Mets have signed first round pick Ike Davis. This hasn't been announced yet.
  16. Great KTE. FYI: the Monday game isn't on ESPN: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/broadcasts/national.jsp#espn
  17. Good stuff on the broadcast: Dan Gieise and Sydney Ponson to go for the Yankees in the DH on Friday.
  18. Duly noted.
  19. Thanks KC and Steve (too touchy on my part)--really, Westchester? I only know his work from that page. I like that he chats with fans during the game.
  20. The Angels, the same Angels that the Mets beat 2 of 3 in the Angels home park, just finished a three game sweep of the Phillies in Philly. Interesting bottom of the 9th: F-Rod got the first two outs, then Feliz got on, was PR for by Bruntlett w/Rollins up, Bruntlett stole 2d, Scoscia walked Rollins (there was a 2-1 count) even though that meant putting on the winning run, then Taguchi fouled out to end it.
  21. KC: I hope that you're not referring to me for cutting and pasting something that I thought might provoke chat. Delcos is in the press box for a NJ paper chatting live with fans. He does a great job. http://mets.lohudblogs.com/
  22. Some notes from John Delcos: Notebook: Ryan Church to take BP tomorrow at Shea. Luis Castillo day-to-day with strained left thigh. Jerry Manuel said he MUST plan not to have Moises Alou again this season. Brian Schneider is day-to-day with a bruised left pinkie. He said he hopes to play tomorrow.
  23. A pickoff, a DP from the OF throwing behind the runner... Jerryball is head's up baseball!
  24. While we have an update on Jose Valentin, I'm checking the papers to see where Greg went shopping today.
