If it is, I think they feel like they can flip any of the guys not named Senga at the deadline to pad the farm and then load up in '25. And maybe it's an 83-win team that flirts with a wild card. I think that's possible, too.
  2. I immediately thought he was a different (better) Diego Castillo.
  3. https://twitter.com/Mets/status/1743350675742839197 Good use of this thread. Reduce, reuse, recycle, just like these middle relievers.
  4. Another 1-year deal. Another bounce-back candidate who will be off the books in '25 if he has no "bounce". The Bridges of Queens County will be the hottest blockbuster of summer 2024.
  5. https://twitter.com/hgomez27/status/1742688006794780732 Probably prudent. I know he wants to get ramped up and play ball but getting to spring training injury-free and feeling good would be tops on my list, too.
  6. COOKIE is a pretty great looking cover overall. They got an incredible action shot that fills the page. Headline doesn't dwarf or cover the subject, and the name of the paper even falls behind Carrasco's head giving it depth in layers. The white font even works to not overwhelm everything and there's not a bunch of extra shit about the Knicks or the Rangers or whoever crowding up the page. The headline itself is just fine, though. Can't have it all.
  7. I think THEY DON'T GOT IT might have the juice to go all the way
  8. Not feeling too upset coming in 2nd for that dude at that rate. On to the next.
  9. He could and should catch David Wright in most counting stats by the looks of it.
  10. Perfect, 1-year (Shea) bridge guy. Go for it.
  11. Build hospitals? Sure? Not paying athletes won't make them better citizens. Keep creating and expanding orientation and transition programs for young people who are becoming suddenly very rich young people. The NBA does it, I don't know if MLB does, but build and grow those programs. Give young players a veteran player "big brother" or sponsor or something. Education and guidance. And hospitals.

A Boy Named Seo wrote: He's been bad but he seems to fit the current bill: 1) cheap(er) compared to top tier guys 2) short-term deal pretty damn likely 3) could surprise everyone and be good again bonus stuff 4) not over 30 5) durable I vote yes. Other than #4 these seem like Fred Wilpon criteria. No one would argue the Mets plan worked last year, but they paid $100MM in luxury taxes for trying. It's nothing like Wilpon.

  14. Were pivoting to a 74 win season at this pace This is a rebuild until action says otherwise Probably even dump Pete Very disappointing off season Nah, it's no rebuild, it's never been. They're >$250MM for '24 and already at $140MM for '25 on six players. Those aren't "rebuild" numbers. And Yamamoto was the action. They offered over $300MM on one dude. By all accounts, they don't want to get tangled in the luxury for a decade to come on 30-somethings like Blake Snell, which I'm great with. Their plan at this point doesn't appear to be top secret - one year, lower-dollar contracts on bounce-back guys for this season and hopefully make the playoffs. Then tax reset for '25 with guys like Mauricio, Acuña, Vasil, Christian Scott, etc. hopefully thriving. When you're not sure, just see if they're following the Dodgers. That's always been the blueprint.

I guess it's not terrible to miss out on 12 years to a little guy that throws hard. History tells us they don't hold up. But will probably be awesome for 4-5 years if he's everything he's cracked up to be. Total Lincecum vibes (which I only say now cause we lost out on him)
  16. =metsmarathon post_id=143450 time=1703254609 user_id=83] holy shit, though. 12 years for a pitcher. WHAT?! is baseball taking crazy pills? i really hope the dodgers are going to be able to market the fuck outta themselves in japan or these contracts are going to hurt. i don't think the mets are necessarily going to make a big pivot to other big name players this offseason. and i think that's probably the right play, if they're really building for '25 maybe a jordan montgomery makes sense, but that might be the biggest big name for them to go after this year as they build for next. giolito would be an interesting get. but, um, seriously, can we throw some of that yamamoto money pete's way. please?
  17. I try to hijack that Dylan Cease trade. He's still 27 and won't be a FA til after '25. Take a flier on Lucas Giolioto for 1 year plus an option if he doesn't suck. And I try to sign Brandon Woodruff to a 2-year deal. Coming off TJ but he'll be just 31 next year. And I throw all that money not spent on Yamamoto on Roki Sasaki next year. 24: Senga Cease Severino Quintana Giolito Howser Megill Butto Peterson 25: Senga Sasaki Cease Woodruff Giolito Vasil etc.
  18. They won the Arson Judge sweepstakes
  19. Goddamn Shohei is thicc
  20. I don't know what kind of raises the new guys are gonna get, but it seems like the Mets did pretty decent here? And STOINS obviously knows all there is to know about these dudes. Edit: MLBTR updated their post and projects Houser to get $5.6M and Taylor $1.7M so I guess a little cheaper than your average free agent bro.
  21. Mets make a trade with the Brewers! --> https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/mets-to-acquire-adrian-houser-tyrone-taylor-from-brewers.htmlhttps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/mets-to-acquire-adrian-houser-tyrone-taylor-from-brewers.html In: RHP Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor, the former filling a rotation need and the latter is that good glove outfielder they've been looking for. Out: minor league RHP Coleman Crow, one of the dudes we got for Escobar. Discuss.
  22. He should wait til Feb 1. Maybe he'll get $400M.
  23. I'd forgotten how much ass mom kicked when she came home and found some hatched gremlins. Threw one in blender, stabbed one nearly to death and let hit bleed out and microwaved the last one. And Phoebe Cates' story about how she learned the was no Santa Claus was fucking hilarious.
  24. I watched this in a theatre last night, I'm assuming for the first time since 1984 and I definitely haven't seen it in over 30 years. It was darker and funnier and campier than I remembered. What'd you think of Gremlins?
