  1. Think of the marketing opportunities: FARTINEZ: SILENT BUT DEADLY!!!!
  2. I like Jerry because he seems like a smart guy. That makes me like him a lot more than the overly-defensive-not-so-smart guy he replaced.
  3. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: How about "Fartinez" I think we have a winner.
  4. Pelfrey 6 Beltran 2 Evans 1 Delgado 1
  5. Not likely to last. Me and Tatis.
  6. Rivera: Hey Billy? Wagner: Yeah Mo. Rivera: You might want to stay out of the punch. I electrified it to keep it free of bugs.
  7. Seems like a decent guy in his post. Now I feel bad.
  8. Totally classless. Being able to argue a call without really hurting your team (other than by ejection) is one of the cool things about baseball, in my opinion. I like the scripted dance that manager and ump go through...the in-your face arguing, the tantrums, the ump with the exaggerated "You're outta here!" motion. But some guys just don't know where to draw the line. This clown, the guy in Atlanta who threw the fake hand grenades. Stuff like that makes you wonder if the time has come for a penalty to your team for being an ass (kind of like the technical foul in basketball).
  9. Well that's that. Rumor has it that Alou tore his other hammy while being moved from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL.
  10. Nice inning by Schoeneweis. Ben, does your nose smell anything for the bottom of the 7th?
  11. Professional Slamball player ends up being a tool? Shocker.
  12. WAGNER: RANDOLPH HATED KIDS Details p. 55
  13. Wright works the walk. If nothing else, we're pumping up Zito's pitch count.
  14. Damn. There goes the shutout streak. Still 3-1 good guys.
  15. Cramps are not really injuries are they? Just stay hydrated, eat some bananas and you should be ok.
  16. Characteristics of Moises Alou day: No one shows up to work. Everyone gets paid anyway. Someone strains an eyelid blinking. Smelly hands.
  17. Armando had some of his best years in New York. He just couldn't handle the pressure of playing in San Francisco.
  18. Well, let's not start sucking each other's dicks quite yet.
  19. That's great. I can't believe you can remember the stuff you read. I remember reading all sorts of baseball fiction as a kid but for the life of me I can't remember what any of them are. I'll certainly have to try reading that and remember it when my son is older. I can't wait until he's old enough that I can talk baseball with him. He'll be three at the end of August and is just starting to figure out what baseball is. On our trip to Shea last month he said the following: "Dada, is that baseball?" Yes it is. "Can I play too?" Well, you have to get a little bit older to play on that field. But if you practice maybe you can when you grow up. "When I play here will you watch me?" (Choking back lots of tears) Of course. I think Dada has something in his eye...
  20. That's right. That was one of the most underreported stats about Benitez. In all of his memorable "meltdowns" he always recovered enough that he would leave the game tied and not allow the other team to take the lead. In fact, in 2002, despite pitching in countless close and tie games, he never allowed the opposition to take the lead.
  21. I think Beltran was right to throw the ball. He absolutely had a shot to get him at third, and as long as he doesn't miss the cut-off man (which I don't think he did) then trail runner doesn't move up to second. If the runner took off during the throw, Reyes could have cut it off and thrown him out easily at second. Because he didn't go (at least I think he didn't go), Reyes let it go. If Wright catches it, or Wags backs it up, the runner doesn't advance. (If the trail runner did break on the throw, then Reyes should have cut it off and taken the easy out at second.)
  22. Billy's got 6 blown saves in half a season...which is about what Armando would have for a full season (if not fewer). Of course, in 2006 and 2007, Billy only blew 5 in each year. Plus the rest of his numbers stack up pretty much the same, so I guess some of this could just be bad luck. I think he had one blown save brought about by error. I was never a big fan or Armando as a player, but I never really disliked him either. Mostly, I felt compelled to defend him from the unwarranted blasting he was getting. I dislike Wagner. Even though I think he's a good closer, he seems like an asshole who says stupid shit. I think Armando did himself no favors because (mostly because of a language barrier) he was unable to say the right things to the press after blowing a save. Billy has no such language barrier but is demonstrating how useful one can be.
  23. Gary Cohen said that too last night. I think he said "In the immortal words of Bob Murphy, the Mets win the damn game." If I remember correctly, Gary is laughing his head off in the background when Bob mutters his famous line.
  24. And Wagner shouldn't have given him such a good pitch on 0 and 2.
  25. Any update? There must be something about this in the pre-game for those watching.
