  1. I'm also a bit concerned that enough teams are going to go the route of under-using their starting pitchers that relief pitching becomes seriously overpriced.
  2. My high priorities are a high-impact right-handed bat (either at third base or centerfield), a reliever capable of closing, and a front-end lefty reliever. Catcher and starting pitcher would be nice luxuries.
  3. I'm hoping for a Bialystock/Bloom team myself. They nailed it without even trying. Of course, they wound up spending more than they brought in...
  4. The Orioles really did suffer for not having a GM in place, as they had the slot money to compete with the Marlins but nobody to make the deal.
  5. I think the Marlins did more to help their team than the Nationals did.
  6. I hate the Dodgers, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Go Sox.
  7. I think Fman is right about Familia. For the hitter, I'm going to be daring and say Josh Donaldson.
  8. I would very much like Bloom or Ng, but I guess we'll see.

A 4.90 ERA in that division and that park sucks less than you might think. And I trust Callaway to get a starting pitcher right. Would you trade Matz for Gray? Just a brain exercise more than anything. I mean, there's a service time calculation I'm probably overlooking but I might It would be three years of Matz (and cheaper, at least to start out) for one year of Gray. So no. But I'd start with Jay Bruce and see where the conversation goes from there.
  10. He wasn't Cy Young caliber in a league that has Jake DeGrom. But he has been solid. The catch is that he grew up a Yankee fan in a Yankee family, and the Yankees need starting pitching badly. The match seems so obvious it would be shocking if it didn't happen. But perhaps he'll get snubbed and turn into the Yankees equivalent of a comic book supervillain. That's when we pounce.
  11. He's somebody I've always felt kind of bad for. But like I said in the other thread, I'd need a reason to think he can stay healthy. Otherwise, you're asking a team who last two seasons can be summed up as "one injury after another" to make a big splash by signing somebody whose whole career can be summed up as "one injury after another."

I would need somebody who knows something about pitchers' arms to give me a reason to think he can stay healthy. But he's been ace caliber when he's actually gotten to the mound.
  13. If I'm going to commit $300M to somebody, I would appreciate some modicum of class in return.
  14. Eovaldi's 112 ERA+ for the year isn't bad, but isn't a whole lot better than what Jason Vargas did in 2017 (108). If you want a pitcher with a "can't handle New York" tag rightly or wrongly placed on him but has real 1 or 2 starter upside, get Sonny Gray.
  15. The terrible optics notwithstanding, it's at least possible that his teammates saw Reyes making efforts to better himself, to an extent that the average fan would never have access to.
  16. ... was a Mets intern and a fan from childhood. https://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-have-watched-homegrown-gm-candidates-blossom-elsewhere-1.21909689 Um, darn?
  17. MLB Trade Rumors just posted its projected arbitration salaries. Here are the predictions for the Mets: Mets (9) Jacob deGrom – $12.9MM Noah Syndergaard – $5.9MM Zack Wheeler – $5.3MM Wilmer Flores – $4.7MM Michael Conforto – $4.4MM Travis d’Arnaud – $3.7MM Steven Matz – $3.0MM Kevin Plawecki – $1.3MM Rafael Montero – $900K I'd be surprised if d'Arnaud and Montero get tendered offers. Flores is on the bubble at that price, especially with the arthritis diagnosis. DeGrom and Wheeler could be offered more than that up front in order to lock them up long-term. The others, I think, can wait.
  18. Gwreck wrote: It’s an award that will go to the player who “inspires others to higher levels of achievement by their on-field performances and contributions to their communities.” He must have contributed a lot to his community?
  19. If you call bringing in somebody with a negative WAR helping the team, then sure.
  20. I'd be enjoying this more if the Sox had won game two.
  21. Yankees first, then the Dodgers (can forgive Royals for playing better than us, can forgive the Cardinals for getting the big hit when we didn't, but Utley deliberately hurting somebody and then getting awarded a base he made no attempt to actually touch? Plunking Nimmo repeatedly until he gets hurt? They'd rank below the Yankees if not for Clemens.) Then whoever is the team to beat in our division. Which means the Braves have just displaced the Nationals.
  22. I don't care what the narrative is as long as Boston wins two of the next three.
  23. Apparently the analytics department (following a chain of links) advised against Bruce and Vargas. I'd want a clear idea of what they DID recommend before giving them an unqualified endorsement, but that was reasonable as far as it goes.
  24. He could have used more time to build up stamina, but playing didn't make the shoulder worse. I think/hope an offseason spent resting rather than rehabbing will do him a lot of good.
  25. Same with Addison Reed.
