  1. McNeil is still sneaking up on people. Good.
  2. I would have taken it if I were AJ Pollock, too, but he and everybody else didn’t.
  3. I would have if I were him. The median scenario is he gets a higher salary than he would have on the market, has a break-even year, and is back on the market next season and can't be QOed. That's a win for him. He's betting on himself staying healthy, obviously, but in his case the benefits outweigh the risks.
  4. Myers isn't a bad player, but I'm not sure where he'd play for us (does he play third well enough to displace Frazier?), and four years is a steep commitment.
  5. Again, I'm not against trading anybody in principle. I do not believe dealing Conforto would serve the interests of winning now, though. And the way to deal with Boras (or any agent) is to let them tell the media whatever they want and not to actually care. We've done plenty of good business with Boras in the past, and there is really no tangible evidence that things are any different now.
  6. In principle, sure. In practice, there are two third basemen on the free agent market I would rather have than the best starting pitcher, so I'm not sure it's the most prudent use of resources. I'm not sure what the Cubs' plans are, but I'd kick the tires on Albert Almora and Wilson Contreras. Their ISO's were so bad after the All-Star Break that they were probably playing hurt, and it's possible that a buy-low opportunity exists (and, obviously, that an offseason is all they need to right themselves).
  7. Wow, you're really bumping up DeGrom. Perhaps I should have kept quiet...
  8. Arbitration ends on Wednesday the 14th, so if you want to make your opponents pay more for their best players, now is the time to make that happen.
  9. Mauer is exhibit A for why moving catchers to first base is a quick and efficient way to render them irrelevant.
  10. What is Lamar Johnson doing these days? He served here in an interim fashion in 2014 I think, and a few guys perked up under his watch (Lucas Duda most notably).
  11. It's a non-issue until/unless he starts hitting like he belongs in the major leagues.
  12. Either you think he's worth what you're paying him, and you keep him, or you don't, and you non-tender him. Keeping him to trade him strikes me as the worst of both worlds. I'm leaning heavily against keeping him, but if it looks to be too much of a sellers' market for catchers -- and yesterday the Rays traded a desirable centerfielder in a package where the primary return was a catcher I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole -- I might change my mind.
  13. I'm not sure where we stand with Cecchini and TJ Rivera going into the season. I would imagine that that would have a huge impact on whether or not we tender Flores a contract, much less go out of the organization for infield depth.
  14. Cabrera would be a great guy to have on the bench -- he switch hits and hits well, has experience at three infield positions, and would probably be a viable option at first base at least to open the season. But I'd be surprised if he doesn't get offered a starter's job with a starter's salary somewhere. If it's January and he's still on the market, I'd place a call.
  15. I'm worried that the market for catchers has just been set too high. Of course, it could also mean that the market for centerfielders has just been set too low.
  16. Would David Wright get offered/accept/be good at the hitting coach job?
  17. The Rays and the Mariners made a trade revolving primarily around catcher Mike Zunino (.210/.259/.410 last year) going to the Rays and centerfielder Mallex Smith (.296/.367/.406, with 40 steals) going to Seattle. Rotoworld described it as the beginning of a potential fire sale in Seattle, but I actually think the Mariners got the much better player.
  18. Frazier (mainly for his glove) was worth more than that last season. So I don't see why not. The latter question is up to Donaldson. Like I said in a different thread, I'd be willing to be very generous for a year. And I've never understood the hate on Mo Vaughn. When we got him I said I'd be thrilled with 30 homers and .270, and we got 26 homers and .259. His .259/.349/.456 line wasn't great, but it wasn't awful, either (it would have looked nice from our first basemen this past season). Compared to the nightmarishly bad seasons we got from Burnitz and Cedeno, and the nightmarishly pedestrian season we got from Robbie Alomar (who, unlike Vaughn, we WERE expecting MVP-caliber seasons from), he did fine.
  19. He has family in Fort Pierce FL, one town north of Port St. Lucie. He'd be a very popular addition down there. As for up here... he's definitely somebody I'd look at, although I haven't zeroed in on anybody in particular for the pen yet.
  20. Fangraphs has Josh Donaldson being worth at least $40M in five of his last six seasons (2018 being the obvious exception). He's basically one lost year removed from that. But he'll be 33, not 26 like Machado and Harper. Of course the injuries are a concern. But if he's willing to do a one-year deal, or even a front-loaded deal with a player option after 2019, I'd go as high as $25M for next year. The potential reward easily outweighs the potential risk under those conditions. And if he's inclined to bet on himself, it would suggest that he, at least, has some confidence in his health. If he insists on a longer commitment, the risk goes up though. He's definitely worth monitoring.

I think it's funny that MLBTR (and pretty much every would-be market swami) is completely ignoring the Sawx of the Midway. And on queue... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/11/offseason-outlook-chicago-white-sox-9.html
  22. Has not been a good defensive centerfielder for a while, and wasn't even good at the corners last year. Might not be able to do better than an OPS in the low 7s at this point. He's rapidly approaching the Bautista/Austin Jackson category at this point.
  23. The Mets need to get more right-handed, there's no reason to think Alonso isn't better than Dom Smith right now, and he's at least as safe a bet in 2019 as Bruce. Sustained success means not giving up 6+ years of somebody in a way that might downgrade a position right now. That is especially true if you're trying to secure the availability of long-term money for front line free agents at positions where you do not already have options. Now you can make an argument that the Mets need Realmuto, who is cheaper than the free agent catchers who are available. The evidence that Realmuto is much better than Grandal or Ramos is lacking, however. In fact, the evidence that he is better at all is debatable. Ramos had an .845 OPS last season, Realmuto had an .825 OPS, and Grandal had an .815 OPS. We are not talking Mike Piazza here. I would much, much, much, much rather pay extra money than give up a high-end prospect who is capable of helping us significantly in 2019.

Well right now Cespedes is on schedule to resume baseball activities other than running in February. Things would have to turn seriously south for him to play no role at all this season, and since he qualifies as a potentially difference-making right-handed bat that we need, I'm not sure why we would want that outcome.
