  1. The Mets are, remarkably, out of replacement-level players at this point. And you can do worse for a dollar. An occasional hit will suffice. Plus it's not like we have four starting pitchers on the injured list too, or anything.
  2. Jarred Kelenic will get the call from the Mariners on Thursday.
  3. I hope TJ makes it all the way back. And I hope Gilmartin and his wife aren't the ones who bought the house down the street from me.
  4. OK, so one of the biggest in the long list of flaws of the Wilpon era was the tendency to bring guys back from an injury before it was prudent, thereby turning a small injury issue into a much bigger injury issue. This regime was supposed to be different.
  5. I have to think he'll retire a Cardinal, even if the reunion is of the one-day variety. Given how he was the best player in the game for a substantial length of time, it's stunning how he became so irrelevant so quickly, and then stayed that way for years, that you almost forgot he was still playing. I guess you can make a similar statement about Miguel Cabrera. Both would have retired a long time ago if not for the length of their deals.
  6. The core of the lineup had done mostly very well (one month notwithstanding) on Chili's watch. As far as different philosophies go: a big problem with Alderson's GM tenure was that he was preoccupied with maximizing fly balls while his team played home games in one of the parks that rewarded that approach the least. Van Wegenen had said that he wanted to change that approach, and while I had doubts initially about Davis, I think he was one of the few things van Wegenen did right.
  7. That catch should have qualified Almora to start tonight over Pillar.

Apparently it https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/scot-free.htmlderives from an archaic word of Scandinavian origin that means "tax." So the phrase just means getting away with not paying your tax, literally or figuratively. So I don't think you're slurring anyone. This forum isn't Scott-free as long as I'm around.
  9. If Cohen is smart, he rips the front office up and starts over. I don't think anybody is salvageable, starting with Alderson. The team will be better for it.
  10. So what exactly is the rule on HBP's if the umpire determines the player didn't do enough to avoid it? Does it become a ball, even if the pitch was in the strike zone?
  11. From a strategy standpoint, that's exactly why I hate intentionally walking the bases loaded in walk-off situations. REALLY happy to see Jeff get his first hit in style. (PS he only has one strikeout, and the .000 BABIP can literally only go up.)
  12. Oh, and leading off a guy with a sub-.300 career OBP is moronic.
  13. Loup makes more sense (at least in theory) than Lucchesi in that situation, and I get that one of our lefty hitters will sit when a lefty starts for the other team, but DeGrom getting 77 pitches when you know (or at least should know) that the pen is the weak link on the team is just not defensible, by any standard. I don't want Jake throwing 100 mph, especially since he doesn't need to to get guys out. I want him going seven every outing, eight on average, and all nine when necessary.
  14. The Phillies pen is due for multiple implosions after being perfect in the Braves series. I've been itching for baseball this past weekend. You have to have a sense of humor about it and hope it works for the best in the long run.
  15. .320/.380/.500, All-Star and then some.
  16. 2-4, 2.85 ERA in 48 relief innings. Keeps the pen from keeping the Mets from making the playoffs.
  17. 8-6, 3.85 ERA, spends the second half of the year in the pen.
  18. Alas, I think his window of opportunity to play a home game in Flushing has slammed shut.
  19. .275/.330/.480, with 23 HR and 82 RBI.
  20. 95-72 second to the Braves yes 6 games in the NLCS Padres 38
  21. I doubt there's 'demands' going on, but it's The Post. It's not a "demand" in the sense that Lindor might be stomping his feet, raising his voice, making threats and throwing an all-around tantrum as he asks for what he's askin' for. It's a contract term. Lindor's request for an amount of money is "a demand" in the language of contracts. "Offer' is self-explanatory. So you've got an offer and a demand. And when the offer and demand are the same, that'll lead to a contract. Exactly. Lindor is not demanding whole lot more than I'm comfortable with giving him. Assuming Cohen feels the same way, I don't see why meeting him in the middle won't get it done to both sides' satisfaction.
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Nine years, $320 million. No-trade clause. No opt-out. Will end up with not quite as many base hits as a Met as David Wright. An opt-out after four years, but otherwise this. As for this year: .275/.345/.515, 32 HR, triple digits in runs and RBI. And a Gold Glove.
  23. Why do I get the feeling that I'm never going to live this one down?
  24. I don't like preseason predictions. I'm also worried that throwing 100+ mph will take innings away from DeGrom and give them to the pen, which will help neither his MVP chances nor the Mets. And that's assuming he doesn't blow his arm out. You want the MVP? Give me 240, kick it old school, and show them how it's done.
  25. No shocks in the bunch. I'm rotting for Blevins, but he didn't show anywhere near enough.
