  1. I think they gambled on Alvarez being ready to contribute at this level by Labor Day, especially since the Cubs were not budging on Contreras, but Alvarez got hurt. (And I'm guessing he played hurt when he was struggling at AAA.) Honestly that's what I would have done, but it backfired. You have to admit the mistake on the Ruf deal. The Mets went from being overly aggressive on getting relievers under van Wegenen to not being nearly aggressive enough. Relievers are easy to find and cheap at the deadline, but they just haven't been enough of a priority.
  2. Oh, the look on Yankee fans' faces when he signs with us six minutes after free agency starts...
  3. I agree about Marte, but all three starters were given leads.
  4. I'd argue he was one of the most underrated Mets for being a really solid player on terrible teams. He was a good-hitting catcher for that era, not Carter or Bench but certainly good enough to play for a winner had the Mets surrounded him with anything.
  5. Shouldn't we have started a Rob Manfred Hates Baseball Thread as soon as he got the job? The shift shortens games by turning hits into outs, and it punishes the three-true-outcome style that has permeated the game and led to much longer at-bats. If Manfred really wanted to shorten games, he would embrace shifting. And pitchers hitting too, but that ship has sadly sailed.
  6. 20. Apparently I wasn't the only one swayed by a nice round number.
  7. A bunch of pitchers and one catcher. I'm guessing it has something to do with the postseason but I don't have an answer yet.

  9. He signed before the Mets even needed to offer him the QO. Now the Mets have an extra draft pick and five better starting pitchers. I can assure you the Mets have fewer regrets than Thor does.
  10. Michael Kopech of the White Sox fans 11 Tigers in six no-hit innings -- and gets pulled after 85 pitches.
  11. Diaz had 3.5 WAR (going by Fangraphs) in his great season in 2018, and he probably won't top that this year (he's at 2.3 WAR). Five Mets position players and one pitcher (Scherzer, despite the injury) rank higher. I don't think you can make a realistic MVP case for him. As for Cy, I'm not categorically against awarding relievers but they not only have to be exceptional, there can't be a really deserving starting pitcher. And Alcantara is deserving, at least as of now.
  12. I don't know how hard the Mets tried, to be honest.
  13. As for Dom Smith... I don't see how he avoids getting non-tendered at this point. I'd have thought, since he's re-habbing, that somebody might have been willing to take a stab at him for the remaining six weeks or so (assuming the Mets eat his contract for the remainder of this year) and see if he shows signs of life with full-time play (sort of a lease with an option to buy), but I guess nothing worked out.
  14. It will be easier to trade McCann in the offseason, although the deal may be of the "eat 80% or more of the salary and take a low-A reliever" variety.
  15. I know he still has growing pains, but there's no way we ride with the catchers we have in September and October if there's a catcher at AAA who can do THAT.
  16. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=102123 time=1659542848 user_id=68] =batmagadanleadoff post_id=101006 time=1658857717 user_id=68] Well, it's looking like the 1st place team in the NL East will secure one of the two. byes. So if that holds up, winning the division certainly matters. A lot.
  17. The Hot Corner wrote: The trade I really wanted was to take Contreras off the Cubs hands. He would have been a significant upgrade at catcher or as a righthanded DH on other days. I had seen last reports that the Cubs wanted top notch prospects (Mauricio and some pitching prospects) as well as MLB ready players J.D.Davis or David Peterson for Contreras. Would have been a significant upgrade, but the Mets (and everybody else) apparently found the Cubs asking price a little too steep for a short-term rental. The Cubs asked for so much they got nothing. I get why they'd want more value than the draft pick they'd get from giving him a QO, but they appeared to be asking for quite a bit more than that. I'd have balked too. In the meantime, Alvarez has a .789 OPS at AAA despite a criminally unlucky .229 BABIP after yesterday's game. He's doing better than the basic stat line makes it look. He could still be the answer in September and October.
  18. =seawolf17 post_id=101922 time=1659472892 user_id=91] Had an obscene first season, which maybe made us all think he was a little more than he actually was.
  19. A couple of big league starts that were memorable for the wrong reasons. I thought he was an option for being a lefty in the pen down the stretch. I will be mad if the Giants use him that way and he is successful.
  20. Most of the team went cold in July, and Nimmo was not an exception. I'm figuring a mild bounceback. It's worth noting that his 120 OPS+ is not that far below his 128 career norm.
  21. =Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=101959 time=1659477494 user_id=119] The Mets have agreed to a trade that'll net them right-handed reliever Mychal Givens from the Cubs, SNY's Andy Martino tweets. (Per trade rumors)
  22. The Phillies had to give up their 26th best prospect to get Robertson. We gave up at least one better prospect for the difference between Darrin Ruf and J. D. Davis.
  23. Ruf has been a better hitter than Davis the last three seasons, especially against lefties, so there's some logic to it. But throwing in prospects for a platoon DH who's a bit better than Davis? I don't get that at all.
  24. Hosmer wound up going to the Red Sox (a team NOT on his no-trade list), so presumably the Padres and Nationals can now get around to finalize this. Or, the Nationals have used the delay to figure out that they are setting their franchise back for a decade and they probably shouldn't do that.
  25. Yeah, the NATIONALS are taking on the undesirable contract to make this deal work. Edgy, is there something wrong with the air in the Baltimore/DC area that their general managers are running their teams like fifth graders in a Strat-o-Matic league with high schoolers?
