  1. And for nine more years. But the noise coming from Yankee fans if the team let themselves get outbid would have been deafening. Amusing, perhaps, but deafening. He doesn't have to duplicate last season to be worth plenty more than that initially, but the down years might be a different story (see Pujols, Cabrera, Cano). But Judge was smart to realize the Yankees lowballed him last year. And the Yankees were dumb to let this play out.
  2. =metsmarathon post_id=114053 time=1670293211 user_id=83] han solo was still frozen in carbonite
  3. I was disappointed to just find out that the Commodore 64 is actually older than Justin Verlander by half a year.
  4. How did you not mention Max Scherzer?
  5. I'm not at all convinced that throwing money at pitchers is the best way to go right now. Scherzer wasn't worth his salary last year, and Verlander has to duplicate last year twice to be worth his. That being said, I've always been a fan and if there's any chance of him getting to 300 in a Mets uniform..
  6. 11 and 300, and he's a year younger than Judge. I'd be squeamish on the years, but the AAV is reasonable (he was worth more than Verlander last season). It will be interesting to see if it's frontloaded.
  7. =metirish post_id=113834 time=1670158379 user_id=72] I am not sensing #MetTwitter meltdown over the last few days like I expected. A lot of wow that's crazy money/ years, see ya....I think many were not surprised at all...was Jake a beloved Mets player?
  8. I remember looking at his minor league stats, thinking they reminded me of Bobby Parnell's and deciding that he might be a decent reliever for a few years. But a couple of starts in it was clear he was more than that. And while Harvey, Thor, and Wheeler kept getting more attention, he quietly became the best pitcher on the team. And then he quietly became the best pitcher in the league, despite being held back by hitting/bullpen support that was criminally negligent. But dialing it up on the radar gun the way that he did should have raised more red flags. We were all too blown away by the stat line to consider it might come at a cost. He tried to fix what very clearly wasn't broken, and then it broke. And now the Rangers are paying him as if that didn't happen.
  9. Here is where it gets tricky. Teams are overpaying for the innings they get from pitchers right now, so you have to be careful. Plus the injury risk is high. Rodon has become an elite pitcher by jacking up his velocity; how much are you really willing to bet that's sustainable? But Jose Quintana seems to have gotten his groove back by not trying to strike people out. He might provide quality at low risk. Ross Stripling found success by walking fewer people and keeping the ball in the yard. He's another good bet to be worth more than his contract. And Johnny Cueto came back from injury to not only pitch well for the White Sox, but to give them more than six innings per start (something distressingly few starters have been doing). I think all three of those guys are capable of giving you at least as much as Bassitt for less money.
  10. The loss of Strawberry marked the clear end of an era. As sad as I am to see Jake go, I don't think that's the case here. While I was mad about both Reyes and Fonzie, in hindsight they were both let go at the right time. I'm angrier about Wheeler in hindsight. He's pitched better for the Phillies than I would have thought. Thor, like deGrom, was given an unreasonable offer from somebody else that he was better off taking. It would be more of a gut punch if I thought the Mets weren't trying (see Reyes and Alfonzo), but I was a lot more ready to move on from Thor than I am from Jake.
  11. The Mets announced on Wednesday they have signed right-handed pitcher Denyi Reyes and left-hand pitcher Zach Muckenhirn to minor league deals with invites to spring training. https://metsmerizedonline.com/mets-sign-two-pitchers-to-minor-league-deals-2/https://metsmerizedonline.com/mets-sign-two-pitchers-to-minor-league-deals-2/ Later Are you sure this is the right thread to talk about Mets' offseason moves?
  12. Well if anybody can afford to think long-term, it's Bryce Harper. It probably helps the Phillies long-term as well, but they might have some ground to make up next year by the time he gets back.
  13. Fangraphs pegs Verlander's 2022 as being worth $48M. So for his asking price, he's gotta come close to repeating that just for you to break even. (The Mets got $35M of value from Scherzer, which was good if you ignore the salary entirely.) I think Billy Beane would call this a market inefficiency. Pitchers just aren't worth what they're getting right now. And for a team that needs three starters and at least two relievers, that's a problem.
  14. That one makes no sense at face value either; Swanson had a really good year, but the Mariners sold him very high. Even if the Jays do sign Nimmo, they'll be paying a huge premium for a defensive upgrade. And obviously, I hope they don't sign Nimmo.
  15. I don't even know if "cratering" does Bellinger's fall sufficient justice. Other than Bellinger, not a whole lot of noteworthy names that I could see. One name I could see the Mets looking into is Jarlin Garcia, who has been a serviceable lefty out of the pen over several years for the Giants. 65 IP with a 3.50 or so ERA from any reliever would be worth the $2.5M the Giants weren't willing to give him.
  16. There was another interesting non-tender. Alex Reyes got the boot from St. Louis. He has all kinds of talent, but he's missed multiple whole seasons (2022 included).
  17. Yoshida is not a centerfielder as far as I can tell. But that's a great BB/K ratio that should help him play here.
  18. I like Brigham. Hernandez doesn't deserve a major league contract. But I do like stocking up on arms. The way pitchers are handled right now, quantity is as important as quality.
  19. In an odd trade, the Twins trade Gio Urshela to the Angels for a mid-teens prospect. I would think a .285/.338/.429 third baseman who wouldn't kill you at short making $8M could get a lot more than that. Perhaps the Twins were in a hurry to free a roster spot or had their eyes on that particular prospect, but I don't get this one.
  20. Only Chili Davis seemed to know how to work with him. The talent is there, but he'd done nothing in the last two seasons to justify paying him what he'd have gotten in arbitration.

  22. It also doesn't hurt that he still has options.
  23. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/mlb-looking-into-potential-cba-violations-by-multiple-teams-regarding-top-free-agents.htmlhttps://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/mlb-looking-into-potential-cba-violations-by-multiple-teams-regarding-top-free-agents.html Without specific statements from specific people (the quote from the article is more a general observation than anything concrete), it would be hard to prove a case. But I have a few observations. 1. Cohen might be in the doghouse with the league, but Martino probably gets a raise for all the hits the SNY website is getting right now. 2. Regardless of real intentions, it would be so much more fun to make Yankee fans nervous rather than reassure them. 3. I would collude with Chase Utley and Roger Clemens before I colluded with the Steinbrenners.
  24. Put up sick AAA numbers (a K/BB ratio in excess of 10), but then got hurt. Not sure if he can pitch effectively and sustainably at the same time, but for the price of a waiver claim, why not?
  25. The Rays have a surplus of pitching, and a shortage of healthy pitching. Yonny Chirinos might be a good buy-low candidate, having finally gotten back to the mound after TJS followed by a freakish broken elbow while pitching batting practice. And Brooks Raley is a good lefty reliever they would probably move. I wouldn't go overboard to get either, but I'm definitely talking.
