  1. Last week the Yankees DFA'd Lucas Luetge, a lefty reliever coming off a season with a 2.67 ERA, and then yesterday dealt him to the Braves for two underwhelming prospects. On paper, it looks great for the Braves and puzzling for the Yankees (i.e., there must be somebody on the 40 who's an easier cut than a lefty who did well for you). Oddly, I'm hoping the Yankees know what they're doing.
  2. You look at the anger in our responses, and you look at Wagner's actual performance with the Mets, and you have to wonder what the disconnect is. I think it may be just be the fate of closers, magnified by the frustrating ends to those seasons.
  3. He seemed to vacillate between being very underrated and very overrated (the shortened 2020 with the ridiculous BABIP made him look like way more than he really was), but on the whole he was a pretty good corner outfielder for us for a fair length of time. And he was a big part of our 2015 run after his call-up.
  4. Never got healthy or comfortable here. I thought he'd be a serviceable bridge to Alvarez and an easy player to move when the time came. Oh well. I'm not convinced Narvaez is an upgrade though.
  5. Injured utility guy with some upside and four years of team control looking for a team that can afford to be patient. Welcome to Flushing.
  6. =Fman99 post_id=115262 time=1671637671 user_id=86] My strategy for this contest was spot on.
  7. Well if they don't like getting regularly outmaneuvered by teams in New York, they could have just stayed in New York.
  8. I'm trying to figure this out from the Giants end of things. They apparently saw something in the physical they didn't like, but the doctors didn't think it was a big deal. At that contract length (the Giants had given him 13 years), unless it's career-threatening, so what?
  9. Baseball player salaries have not risen at a rate commensurate with revenues for about as long as George's kids have been running the Yankees. The younger Steinbrenners fell in line. The Red Sox went on a spending spree a few years ago that correlated with a winning spree, but they have since fallen in line themselves to the point of selling off their most expensive assets (or letting them walk) and angering their fans. Even the Dodgers are not spending the way it looked like they would when their current ownership took over. Is Cohen going to go rogue and stay there, or will he be reeled in too? Only time will tell. And in the meantime, we can laugh at the Yankees for being cheapskates.
  10. He did a good job for us in multiple roles, including some roles he really wasn't meant for. I have always thought, and still think, that he's not a starting pitcher on a good team. But I will be happy for him if he proves me wrong.
  11. Frayed Knot wrote: But the seemingly ridiculous ease in which the team then pivots to a usually successful Plan B must ease the heartache a bit. Yeah, they do this a lot. Even with the catcher trade, it looks like they gave up a lot for the difference between Sean Murphy and William Contreras, but they usually know something I don't. I'm not really sure what the plan B is here, though.
  12. I don't get this. Narvaez has had two dreadful seasons out of three, which makes the difference between him and McCann negligible. That money would make a bigger difference in the bullpen. Of course, that's assuming Cohen's pockets have a bottom...
  13. =Fman99 post_id=114382 time=1670585239 user_id=86] This is great news. He's really a player that didn't have an equivalent out there in the FA market so I'm glad he's staying put.
  14. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Feels like Eppler's had like 6 Red Bulls tonight. Cohen has provided him with an unlimited supply.
  15. In all seriousness, I was looking to see which pitchers were good bets to outperform their likely contracts, and the list is distressingly short. I'm not one for overpaying for last year's stats -- I've made that mistake often enough in fantasy -- but Quintana wasn't overpaid at all and I don't think Stripling will be either.
  16. Maybe they will give us Pete Crow-Armstrong back for him too. Kyle Hendricks might be more realistic and interesting, if you think the shoulder issue was the reason his form went south and we'd only have to wager McCann that he's recovered. I was wondering if the Cardinals would take McCann for Steven Matz, but I guess that's a no.
  17. =metirish post_id=114286 time=1670497227 user_id=72] Xander Bogaerts to the Padres for 11 fucking years/$280 million , wow , that's reckless??
  18. Self-styled Met villain heads back to NL. https://twitter.com/mlbnetwork/status/1598789451962060825 Another good deal for the Mariners. Winker has bounceback potential, but I'm not spending $8M on a platoon DH looking for redemption unless they're taking a similarly dubious contract from us. Wong is better than that.
  19. If Ruf was playing hurt last year, they should keep him right where he is. Or at least give him the chance to prove he is closer to being the guy from the previous couple of seasons. (Hell, they bailed on Davis prematurely, why make the same mistake twice?)
  20. Good thing the Cubs got everything they could for him in that big deadline deal.
  21. He had a solid stat line the third time through the lineup this season, as often as it happened (.226/.295/.333, as opposed to .246/.301/.343 overall). I bet he could handle a bigger workload if asked to. I like him more than Taijuan Walker or Taillon, who got four years. This is a good signing.
  22. Raley doesn't score any points in the likeability column, but he's a solid lefty who'll cost less money than worse relievers will get in the open market. Askew is too far away to get a real sense of what kind of pitcher he will be. But I do like his motion.
  23. =smg58 post_id=112940 time=1668517525 user_id=62] The Rays have a surplus of pitching, and a shortage of healthy pitching. Yonny Chirinos might be a good buy-low candidate, having finally gotten back to the mound after TJS followed by a freakish broken elbow while pitching batting practice. And Brooks Raley is a good lefty reliever they would probably move. I wouldn't go overboard to get either, but I'm definitely talking.
  24. =smg58 post_id=113767 time=1670077709 user_id=62] Here is where it gets tricky. Teams are overpaying for the innings they get from pitchers right now, so you have to be careful. Plus the injury risk is high. Rodon has become an elite pitcher by jacking up his velocity; how much are you really willing to bet that's sustainable? But Jose Quintana seems to have gotten his groove back by not trying to strike people out. He might provide quality at low risk. Ross Stripling found success by walking fewer people and keeping the ball in the yard. He's another good bet to be worth more than his contract. And Johnny Cueto came back from injury to not only pitch well for the White Sox, but to give them more than six innings per start (something distressingly few starters have been doing). I think all three of those guys are capable of giving you at least as much as Bassitt for less money.
  25. Another pitcher who got more than I would have paid him. He's only been worth his current salary twice in ten seasons, and neither time by all that much. But he was a likeable guy and easy to root for.
