  1. In Eppler's defense, he did a few things right. He brought in Senga and Quintana to be third and fourth starters on a winning team, and Quintana's injury aside, they did what they were hired to do. Pham was a good pickup too. But the bullpen was way too top-heavy given the team's payroll and the depth that teams need to have in today's game, and when the #1 guy got lost for the season, it was left horribly exposed. I think the Scherzer trade was good for the Mets and the Verlander trade was bad. So, basically, mixed grades. And while I do think Eppler was an improvement over his immediate predecessors in the job, the bottom line is he was handed the largest budget in the history of the league by a wide margin and had 75 wins to show for it. You can't do that and expect to keep your job.
  2. Like Eppler, Showalter had plusses and minuses and you can't credit him for last season while giving him a pass on this year. The Mets have done quite a bit worse in the recent past, but they can also do better and hopefully they will. Remind me to copy and paste this post sometime later in the week when it's Eppler's turn.

I could argue with that, and I might even be right, but it's still an awfully credible statement. Maybe I'm just a young whippersnapper whose memory of Brooks Robinson as an active major leaguer is limited to a 1976 Topps card, but I'm not sure you would even have to leave Baltimore to make a counter-argument. Having said that, he was/is certainly revered by people older than me.
  4. Good. We've long past the point where there was anything to gain from it.
  5. What bothers me about Flores is that he had a very pedestrian first couple of months this season. And then I dropped him from my fantasy team.
  6. He also got named the Eastern League's Pitcher of the week for the effort.
  7. I'd give him a shot. I don't see how an advanced look at a fifth starter option for next year would hurt.
  8. In terms of WAR as a Met (going by Baseball Reference), Gooden is second among pitchers and Strawberry is second among hitters. And they contributed to a world champion. They're both quite a bit higher than Carter or Hernandez, and Piazza as well. So you can disagree on where the line should be drawn, but I would argue the line has already been drawn below them.
  9. Stuart bounced back from two straight rough outings with six shutout innings (two hits, six K's, no walks) last night. Hopefully the ship has been righted.
  10. The good news is that rock bottom arrived earlier than I feared it would.
  11. =ashie62 post_id=134470 time=1691614624 user_id=90] I mentioned it in the Syracuse thread but Mauricio is being broken in at 3B in addition to 2B and LF. I don't know how much SS he plays anymore, if any. This has to have gotten Baty's attention Mauricio has been blocked at SS since Lindor came over in 2021. Why they waited this long to move the kid around the infield is anyone's guess

  13. I still think McNeil is playing hurt. I have no other good explanation. I'm fairly certain Marte was playing hurt for a while, and hopefully his numbers will improve the rest of the way. Alonso has a BABIP of .202, which is... inexplicable for anybody who doesn't bunt on a full-time basis. But at least it's improving? It's overdue for a serious positive regression to the mean (about .260 for him, on account of the shift), but at this point I hope it doesn't happen until next season. Alvarez and Lindor are underperforming in that regard as well, although not nearly to the same degree. I suppose it is possible that they are all overswinging, which would be on the hitting coach, but I don't have enough data to answer that.
  14. After giving up home runs in each of his first three starts, this is more like it: https://www.milb.com/binghamton/news/stuart-schwartz-lead-binghamton-to-shutout-over-new-hampshire
  15. Likeable guy with a solid season. I felt bad trading him, but there was nothing to be gained by keeping him. (I will probably just copy and paste this when we get to Tommy Pham.)

He struck me as the kind of guy the Mets should have targeted.
  17. Gilbert is #68 on mlb.com's rankings. Two years ago the Mets traded Pete Crow-Armstrong, the #7 prospect who like Gilbert is a AA centerfielder, for a AAAA pitcher and two months of Javier Baez -- after learning that DeGrom was done for the season. I have issues with Eppler, but we've had much worse. I'm kind of impressed by Eppler's willingness to tear down what he built, actually. But he's coming across as being better at selling than at buying, and that's not a good look.
  18. I get the Scherzer deal. Verlander, I'm more leery about. I'll be surprised if Pham and Raley stay. There are also a number of teams in the market for catchers, and Narvaez would be worth more to them than he is to us.
  19. He always came across as a likeable and classy guy, but he didn't hit particularly well for a starting corner outfielder. You could justify spending modestly on guys like Canha and Escobar if you were getting your money's worth from the big investments, but that's where the problem has been.
  20. He was getting paid $43M a season to not give back the leads he gave back against Atlanta and San Diego in his last two starts last year. And this year he was simply mediocre. A big splash that got nobody wet.
  21. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Key Flaw says this fella's ceiling ain't high enough for a $36M trade. But being a good-ish major leaguer is worth something too It's not the $36M we're still spending on Scherzer, but the $21M we won't be spending on him and what we do with it that matters. If we get comparable value to Scherzer from that next year, all Acuña has to do is show up and we get what we needed to get from the deal.
  22. The $22.5M the Mets save on this should get us somebody at least as good as Scherzer has been for us in the offseason, plus we get a top-100 prospect. I'll take it.
  23. Maybe in 3 years, we're saying, "I can't believe we got Vargas for a guy who would be a FA in 2 months" but for now, they acquired two teenagers that will be merely names on a list for 3 years. I thought that they were going for high-level/close to ML-ready players but we have to believe that Billy sees something in these young players. ML-ready players with something vaguely resembling upside might not have been available. But this is a reasonable haul for two months of a relief pitcher.
  24. Chirinos wasn't good enough for the Mets to make a waiver claim, but he was good enough for the Braves. Sigh.
