  1. I voted Porter because he didn't last long enough to make a personnel move that still leaves me wondering what he was thinking. He did other things that still make me question what he was thinking, but the franchise wasn't set back by his tenure.
  2. Joe Smith and Collin McHugh both retired this week.
  3. Showed flashes but just couldn't stay healthy. He's a decent gamble for Cleveland on a minor league deal though.
  4. He helps, a little. And the money he just signed for is non-deferred, which apparently makes it worth more in the long run than what he turned down.
  5. Seawolf is Raleigh Fingers and metsmarathon is Alpine Albatrosses, but otherwise I'm not sure which handle goes with which team.
  6. =metirish post_id=145034 time=1705248002 user_id=72] As article says there are only 6% African American players in the league,
  7. He was handed the wheel of a sinking ship. Obviously he didn't distinguish himself, but I'm not sure anybody else at that moment would have.
  8. Calling him an iconic Met would be a massive understatement.
  9. I kind of like the sausage races.
  10. Bader has a career .824 OPS against lefties, so that plus his defense makes him a starter on the short side of a platoon and a defensive sub the rest of the time. He has a role. Not sure that makes him worth $10M, but it's one year and I'm still assuming Cohen has money for what he wants to have money for.
  11. Martinez can still hit, and if he has to DH full time so what, it's a position of need. MLBTradeRumors projected 2 and 40. $20M per seems like a lot for an aging full-time DH, but if I could get him for closer to $30M over two years I'm interested.
  12. Two years for about half that and maybe.
  13. I often wonder how you know when to sell high on somebody. It's easy to see now that for Guillorme that was last offseason. But it's never popular to deal the guy who's overachieving. Hell, I remember getting mad when the Mets traded Ed Hearn for David Cone.
  14. He's aged pretty well. Non-tendering him when we did hasn't. Worst case scenario is that he can give us some offense at DH against lefties. That's enough to justify giving him a call.
  15. It might take longer than normal to figure out how good of a deal this is. Team budgets may be so big in ten years that the deferments are simply shrugged off. Or there is a crunch at some point, and every dollar counts. And that's before factoring in Ohtani's play.
  16. I guess Lugo was right to want to go back to the rotation.
  17. With the winter leagues, teams operate under the assumption that the added development of the prospect justifies the injury risk. I'm not at all sure though that I would allow it for anybody who is (or was, I guess) a good bet to make the Opening Day roster. Urshela had no pop in his bat last year, but if that was due to a nagging injury that he can heal from with the time off he could be a bargain. I worry that Chapman's approach is exactly the wrong one for our home ball park, and that he'd basically be Todd Frazier with us.
  18. So the money is not as ludicrous as it originally looked. I was kind of figuring 10 and 500 would be necessary to get it done, although I still don't think I would have gone that far while doubting he'll pitch for more than half those seasons.

Interest-free payments on the balance start in 2034. This is fucking incredible to me. He will count against the cap this year the same as our new relief pitcher, Jorge Lopez. LOL How long will they be paying him until?
  20. You can't count on any pitching in the second half of this deal, and even elite-hitting DHs have limited value. I love Shohei, but this was quite a bit farther than I would have willingly gone.
  21. I could use a big bat or two myself. I've been too cautious with my bidding when they've become available and it's cost me.
  22. I'm too young to remember 73 directly, but Hodges had a whole career in that one game. I started following baseball in 76, and I remember Hodges as the guy who was always there. He had a surprisingly good OBP, but it's hard to fathom why a backup catcher in the era of free agency hung around for one team as long as he did. Still he bled orange and blue, and he lasted through some dark days for long enough to see the turnaround start.
  23. He was really good in 2022. He had some control issues this year, but it's possible he thought he had a minor arm issue that he could pitch through and it turned out to be much worse than that. Some people take longer than others to recover fully from TJS, so I'd make no promises with this guy. But he's totally worth a waiver claim.
  24. A Boy Named Seo wrote: I posted something on Otto to see who all is coming back. I'm not sure I know everyone there anymore. Smiggy58 is commish, right? I'm terrible but I love that league. Yes I'm the commissioner, although there are a few people more active on the site than I am.
  25. He had said when he got the UCL injury that he'd been dealing with stuff all year (https://nypost.com/2023/09/29/mets-jeff-mcneil-has-partial-ucl-tear-in-left-elbow/https://nypost.com/2023/09/29/mets-jeff-mcneil-has-partial-ucl-tear-in-left-elbow/). And I know there's an article out there with where he was more specific, but I can't find it right now. I think there was a combination of factors. You make pitchers pay for pitching you inside by pulling the ball with authority, but McNeil was unable to do that until the last month or so.
