  1. Who are the extra 15 on the 40-man roster? Anybody we could painlessly drop to make room for Milledge? Nady played some CF in San Diego last year, but he also played his way back into right on a full-time basis. How good is Woodward in center?
  2. Wagner vs. Niekro was an infinitely more favorable matchup. I think Willie overcompensated after being too careful on Monday.
  3. My offense is so bad right now I don't even think I could afford to trade Nevin, much less Lance Berkman. I'm getting zero power from everybody else. Honestly, if I were you, I'd be patient at 1B and pile up the saves while Baez is still closing, Jenks isn't imploding, and Papelbon hasn't been moved into the starting rotation. They've been great for you so far, and should continue to be for at least a little while longer.
  4. Reyes has five walks in 82 AB's, which while still not good is actually an improvement for him. Right now the bigger problem is hits, which should come eventually. I'm still not sure what Reyes' long-term value is, but there's no reason to answer that question today. And since he's still a few years from free agency, I don't see any need to sign him right now to anything.
  5. Right, I don't see the need to hit the panic button on Zambrano just yet. He had enough good starts for us last year to earn a little bit of slack. It's easy to get mad at Zambrano because of the awful deal that brought him here, but three starts don't make a season.
  6. For those of you not watching this on TV, they showed the Padres dugout after the HR and there's a woman massage therapist on the Padres training staff. Hernandez made some half-serious but fully inappropriate comments about women not belonging in the dugout.
  7. Hernandez is going to get a reprimand from his bosses (and deserve it) if he's not careful.
  8. And a kaboom for Piazza! Oh, wait...
  9. Willets Point wrote: There are several military bases in the San Diego area and each season the Padres have a millitary tribute night, hence the camo uniforms. Nice sentiment even if the uniforms look odd. I get the feeling the idea looked a lot better on paper.
  10. Back-to-back thanks to Castro. 2-0 Mets.
  11. And a big KABOOM for the X-factor against his former employers!
  12. Gwreck wrote: This opposing pitcher, Chris Young, is an interesting guy. Went to Princeton (Political Science degree), played Center on the Princeton basketball team; was offered a contract by the Sacramento Kings to play professionally. And while we have other threads going on about the Mets' trade strategies, how bad does Texas trading Young and Adrian Gonzalez for Eaton and Otsuka look now?
  13. Wiggy's start has been as good this year as last year's was awful. He still finished last year with numbers (at least in terms of BA/OBP/SLG)consistent with his career averages, and I'd assume the same thing will happen this year. That being said, he'd still be an offensive upgrade at second base for the Mets, and he'd be an excellent tenth man on a deep team. The Rays need Wiggy as long as Huff is hurt, and since a healthy Huff will get them something at the deadline I'd assume Ty stays in Tampa all year. (PS The Pirates paid the price for bringing in too many young infielders and not giving any of them enough of a chance, and they gave up on Wigginton far too quickly, but nobody said they were any brighter than the Mets.)
  14. Don't look at me, I wasn't doing the acclaiming. There was some evidence based on the last two seasons that LoDuca doesn't have the arm he used to. I'd have said slightly better, at best. You do have to wonder if part of it is the way the Mets hold on runners. But then again, the throws I've seen LoDuca make remind me of, well, Piazza.
  15. Not necessarily. You can move guys on and off the bench on a daily basis, enabling you to bench your starters on days when they don't pitch but keep your relievers active at all times. Remember, the stats for anybody designated 'P' count just as much as the others.
  16. Depends on how bad marathon needs K's. But I'd have held on to Utley.
  17. The DL only has room for one, evidently. You can move guys between SP and P, or to the bench, as long as you don't have more than three designated SP's and two designated RP's, and 3 under the generic P designation.
  18. Julio got a bad break when Hardy's bloop fell in, but he needed to show he could bounce back to justify his continued spot on the roster. Instead Jenkins hit it a mile, and Lee almost hit one out as well but Beltran reeled it in. I realize a great start can cover up a whole bunch of issues, but Julio can't block Bell any further. It's not even in Julio's best interest to be up here at this point.
  19. Unfortunately I have more quantity than quality where 1B's are concerned, and Berkman is very untouchable right now.
  20. How about replacing Valentin with Chase Lambin? Valentin just might accept a demotion if he thinks he needs the AB's. I can't see another major league team biting on him right now.
  21. It's disturbing how vividly I remember every detail of that inning, although I guess I'm not the only one here like that.
  22. It's too early to tell on Hernandez. It's not even a week into the season. He has shown some signs of developing into a competent hitter in the minors last year and spring this year. He'll never have much pop, but he does have base-stealing potential if he gets on. I'm not necessarily against demoting him -- I got the sense that Keppinger was ready but Hernandez needed more seasoning -- but that doesn't mean he's played anywhere near long enough at the major league level to draw any final conclusions.
  23. Can somebody promise me Andruw hasn't been ingesting some dubious substance not currently being tested for before I make a decision? Let's face it, how can you look at what Jones and Derrek Lee did last year (or Adrian Beltre in 04) and not be suspicious?
  24. Yes, bad news for me. And I thought my pen would be my team's strength. Thank God I didn't pull the trigger on any Rivera deals.
  25. You need to put Nomar on the DL first, but otherwise you should be able to do that.
