  1. Regarding the Chass article: Before we talk about Pujols being "free of suspicion" -- as if you can have a start like that in this climate without anybody raising their eyebrows -- do we know if the league is testing for everything the players have been taking? I'd like to think Pujols is clean, but I don't know how you can trust anybody right now, especially if he keeps this pace up indefinitely.
  2. The trade is official today. Basically there is a waiting period, in case somebody objects. It would take something really lop-sided for me to object, especially since the first trade I made has worked out spectacularly badly for me. But who knows...
  3. They're definitely starting early this year. Speaking of the Yankees, they'll have six starters when Pavano comes off the DL in a week or two, and they'd have a use for Victor Diaz. I'm not sure there's a good deal in there or not, but it's an option worth exploring.
  4. They appear to be reluctant to move Heilman, and I think you would have to commit to moving him into the rotation for an extended period of time for it to make any sense (i.e., starting him once and then sending him back to the pen when Bannister or Maine is ready would be too disruptive.) It could still happen eventually out of necessity, though.
  5. That inning couldn't end soon enough. You know, Bill Hall has never held a full time position because they don't like his defense, but he can't possibly be a worse second baseman than Weeks. Carlos Lee dives into the tarp, and every Brewers fan has a heart attack.
  6. It's a fair assessment. I think you'd need to commit to a long-term look at Heilman -- moving him into the rotation for one or two starts until Bannister and/or Maine gets healthy would be counterproductive. I can see why the Mets would be reluctant to do that right now, but that option absolutely has to be taken seriously over the long haul.
  7. I'd very happily take .330 and .756 from him over a full season.
  8. He's pitching Friday, and not on the waiver wire in our league just yet. But he's had a great start to the year in the minors (1.04 ERA, 65 K's in 43 innings).
  9. That's one of my weakest categories as well, so I can't really help you with that.
  10. They certainly have more upside than the guys we have left in AAA, but that's a big jump to make, especially when we'd be asking them for critical innings. I think the fact that the Mets brought MacLane up to Norfolk instead of Soler or Pelfrey indicates that they don't consider rushing those two to be an option. Which is fine, as long as there are better alternatives...
  11. MacLane is up at Norfolk? I saw him in Binghamton a couple of weeks ago and he looked like nothing special. I guess all the pitching adjustments at the major league level have rippled through the system.
  12. I know how you feel. I thought Garland and Doug Davis would be upgrades on Mussina and Westbrook and, well, just look at their ERA's. I also figured Mussina was on his way down. My bad. In the meantime I just dealt Matt Murton for Todd Jones. Jones may or may not still be Detroit's closer when the deal finalizes, but I have quantity in the outfield and can use a supplemental source of saves, so I felt it was a risk I could afford to take.
  13. I just don't see a better short-term solution than bringing up Bell and starting Heilman. I'm not saying I like it, but the only alternatives within the organization appear to be guys who haven't even seen Norfolk yet. When do Bannister and Maine get off the DL?
  14. Elster88 wrote: They don't need Clemens at all. You mean they DIDN'T need Clemens at all. Having a pitcher's wife influence personnel decisions is never a winning strategy, and I'd have no problem arguing that was a really shortsighted trade and Minaya's worst decision since he got here, but the bottom line is Julio is here and Benson isn't. Just like Zambrano is (or until recently was) here and Kazmir isn't. We can lament the deals all we want, but we can't undo them. So where does that leave the Mets right now?
  15. Zito's not pitching well enough to justify dealing Milledge for him. And it may be hard to find somebody willing to deal this early on. I'm willing to cut Pedro some slack from being upset. But Zambrano has to tell the team if he's not all right and continuing to pitch will make it worse. Of course the team has an obligation to determine these things as well, and not simply take the pitcher's word for it.
  16. I had to come back to this thread, as the status of our rotation has changed rather significantly since Friday. I hate Clemens, like I think most of us do, but the Mets are a division leader with a serious problem in the back of their rotation, they do have some money to spend, and it may be tough to find a trade suitor who doesn't ask for Pelfrey or Milledge in return for a lesser pitcher than Clemens. Minaya would not be doing his job if he didn't call up the Hendricks brothers and at least see what it would take.
  17. Pelfrey and Soler are in AA. Let's be realistic. I don't think the fifth starter is less important than the third reliever. I think Heilman is your only short-term option to take Zambrano's spot. If you don't want Heilman in the rotation, your only other option is a deal.
  18. Classic game. Good hustle by Beltran to set up the winning run. Nice job by most of the pen.
  19. Apparently Bard couldn't catch Wakefield at all. So the Padres trade Loretta for a backup catcher they wind up giving right back. Interesting.
  20. On one hand, Nady probably isn't this good, and there's only one direction for Sanchez' ERA to go. On the other hand, Floyd will play better. And the Mets might not have to be THIS good to win the NL East this year. The Nationals and the Marlins are as bad as they look, and the Phillies continue to be overrated. The Braves will make a run at some point, but we've already built up a good lead. My big worry is an injury to the wrong person (i.e. Pedro), but otherwise we have nothing to complain about right now.
  21. I'm not sure it's an institutional change, as we're 25th in team walks, with only Pittsburgh doing worse in the NL. Still, Reyes leaves April on pace for 81 walks... how could that not be a good sign?
  22. I forgot to mention that I got to a B-Mets game last week. The park is nice. The rest of Binghamton, well... My impressions. Jorge Padilla has major league power. Evan MacLane pitched, but does not strike me as a name to remember. I didn't get to see Carlos Gomez use his speed. Brett Harper is huge, but has no home runs to show for his size; he should develop power down the road.
  23. Thome's looked like a top 20 player, if not better, so far. There's still a bit of an injury risk, but I'd lose patience with Zito in a big hurry too if I could get Thome for him.
  24. Bannister's been tough to figure. He's gotten where he is on his ability to consistently throw strikes, yet he's been doing anything but that the last couple of starts. Have his mechanics changed any since spring? I suppose it could be just mental; he'd hardly be the first rookie pitcher to get nervous on the mound or experience growing pains. I do hope he realizes that he can't expect to continue to regularly get himself in trouble and not have it blow up in his face.
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: Twinkies have had amongst the worst pitching so far in this young season and observers are counting the days until he's moved into the rotation. Not to mention his fantasy owners... And after the Giants pitching staff called AJ a cancer, he goes on to call games for the best rotation baseball has seen in a while, whith evidently no complaints. Talk about adding insult to injury. Bay for Reed is a classic 20/20 hindsight deal. I remember Phillips insisting on getting Jason Middlebrook added to the deal, which makes me wonder if Bay would have stayed with us otherwise. Of course the Padres turned around and traded him for Brian Giles, which is the one thing the Pirates have done right this millennium.
