  1. I think/hope he can duplicate last year.
  2. I have a title to defend.
  3. I'm wondering where I disappeared to after making the second post.

Then think about what that offer would have been if he were three years younger at the time of the deal, and it wasn't contingent on his signing a gargantuan extension. (The presumed "injury discount" from his elbow issues is more than outstripped by the cheap one-year contract he's on, no?) Liriano posted a 3.62 ERA with a career high 201 K's in a career high 191 IP last year. Johan had five seasons in Minnesota with more IP than that, more K's than that, a lower WHIP by at least 0.2, and a lower ERA (below 3 in four of those seasons). Liriano certainly has value and upside, but you can't compare their track records. And that's before considering the injury issues. Part of me says you have to kick the tires on somebody like Liriano, but part of me is wondering if the Twins know something we don't and are looking to sell high while they can.
  5. A useful platoon catcher. I expect a line like his 2009 line with the Marlins -- 80 G, 239 AB, 8 HR, 27 RBI, .272/.340/.423.
  6. I'll say 68 IP with a 3.00 ERA and 7 saves.

  8. Ceetar wrote: Who knows how really ridiculous it is? The Mets wanted a closer. Frankie may have been pushing for a 'highest paid closer' tag, which for some reason seems to be a thing. (Look at C.C's contract. conspiracy aside: I wonder if they didn't offer Lee the extra bit because it would've eclipsed CC and maybe they thought he'd leave next year?) Maybe Omar negotiated it this way to get his services at a "reasonable" rate and added the easy option as a way for him to get the highest closer thing, specifically in a year when he knew they'd have more money to spend. Which has been why I really don't care. I'd rather have Frankie than not and I don't think the 13 million prevents the Mets from doing what they need to do to get better. It was not clear that, once the bidding got to three years at over $10M per, anybody else was even competing for his services.
  9. 15-11, 3.75 ERA, 190 IP.
  10. If I'm Sandy Alderson, I let the reporters get distracted by this all they want, and politely ignore them while doing the best job I can to get the team to win some games. And tell my manager and players to do likewise.
  11. bmfc1 wrote: "Known or should have known" is going to be tough to prove. That's terrible language. If the former is true, there's no need to include the latter. By including the latter, it implies that they can't prove that the Wilpons knew. And "should have known" means what, exactly? A number of investment firms were suspicious about Madoff but didn't act on their suspicions. The Wilpons, as bmfc pointed out, are real-estate specialists.
  12. He'll do one memorable thing in his week in the majors. After which, we may or may not see him again.
  13. Not enough range to beat out Brad Emaus for the starting job. Gets traded to the Athletics for pitching help.
  14. He has a decent shot of making the team as a reliever, and he'll probably see a handful of starts as well. His low walk rate will keep his numbers respectable, if uninspiring.
  15. He's a very easy guy to root for.
  16. I'm going to go for irony here and say he spends August and September in the Mets' bullpen.
  17. Well I'd much rather speculate about the players and the actual playing of the game. :-) I guess I'm just sick of hearing about the Wilpons, especially when it seems like everything I'm reading or hearing is negative not just towards them but towards the future of the Mets. We already knew the budget was maxed out, we already suspected their relationship with Madoff had something to do with it, and now they're willing to sell part of the team to make up some money. Fine. I think the best strategy for the fans, as well as for Alderson and the players, is to focus on the games and the financial issues will sort themselves out. PS I apologize if any offense was taken at my previous post.
  18. If the Mets fail to spend any money next offseason after freeing up $50M in payroll, I will assume Alderson has his hands tied. Until then, all this bullshit speculation is irritating and pointless. I can tune in WFAN if I want to hear other Mets fans tell me the sky is falling. I don't need that or want that here.
  19. It depends on how well the Mets are doing. I don't see anybody forcing him out of the closer's role like Benitez did to Franco in 99, although I'm hoping to be wrong. Otherwise, sabotaging a pennant run just to keep a contract from vesting would be a tough sell to the fans regardless of what the union thinks.
  20. He'll have a good season in AAA, but Duda gets called up first and it will take multiple injuries/trades to see him in Flushing before September.
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: Sheesh, Omar would have at least given him a free vest. Free? No, Omar's vests were always quite expensive.
  22. $7.5M over two years. He could be perfectly mediocre and justify that cost, but he's already given us the right to expect more than that. Nicely done.
  23. seawolf17 wrote: The CPF needs to be a minority partner. I'm in for $37 too. We'll only need... /crunches numbers ... about 162,000 other people or so. We need a more symbolic number. 41? 69? (for the World Series year, so whatever else you may be thinking, stop now.) 86?
  24. It's a better move for Texas than Toronto, although Napoli wasn't a great fit it Toronto because of Arencibia. Napoli's no Piazza, but I can't see how his glove hurts more than his bat helps.
  25. A solid year in AAA. We'll probably see him in September, although I suppose he could be a trade candidate if the Mets are contending in July.
