  1. They're also the team we need to catch for a wildcard spot. Let's take three.
  2. Hairston has very quietly (and very slowly, given the complete lack of AB's) brought his line up to .259/.333/.426. I bet we start to see a bit more of him.
  3. The pitfall of being a singles team. Sometimes the singles don't come at the right time. And sometimes the other guys make the plays in the field while you don't. And sometimes you don't get the jump you need to try to score from second on a single or first on a double. As if Bay's hitting wasn't bad enough, his throw home on the Murphy play was atrocious.
  4. Benjamin Grimm wrote: He started out fairly non-sucky, but that didn't last. Which allows for at least some possibility that, like Wright, there's a medical reason behind his hitting woes (at least the recent ones).
  5. I guess we're treating the Ollie contract as a re-signing?
  6. Whatever the reason, I think the Mets need to hope that a team with a more hitter-friendly park is willing to gamble that all he needs is a change of scenery. I just don't see him giving the Mets more than Martinez or Duda could over the next 2 1/2 years.
  7. He's on a pace for similar numbers to his 2009 season everywhere except batting average, and this was actually true when he was hitting below .250 as well. He's gotten a flurry of singles lately, but I figure he'll wind up about where he was in 2009.
  8. Reggie's 44, or something flammable.
  9. When Howie said this would be the biggest comeback win in eleven years, I thought to myself, what about that game against the Braves? Then I remembered, that was eleven years ago. If the Mets make something of this season, this game will be looked on as the turning point.
  10. Cohoon made his first appearance in Buffalo last night, giving up five runs in five innings. I'm a bit surprised by the timing of the call-up, given that he'd been off his form a bit lately (he was homer-prone his last few starts in Binghamton.)

    Hack Bay

Which is ironic, given that defense was supposed to be the hole in his game. I'm tired of blaming Citifield. Ask Tulowitzki or Mike Stanton if it's hard to hit homers here. The truth is, I can't come up with a reason to think I'd rather have Bay out there than Martinez.
  13. smg58 wrote: Difficult to say. He may be the best fielder of the 2B candidates, and if he's a decent enough SS he'd obviate the need to bring a weaker bat up north. My guess is he makes the team as a reserve, and pulls a .280/.340/.390 line in 200 ABs. Hu got exactly one inning of work at short, and my guess is that Turner wouldn't have killed us there if the inning had gone to him instead. I'm thinking he'll beat my projection for slugging percentage, though.
  14. Thole's had 6 walks and 0 strikeouts over his last 19 plate appearances. The bad news is that he has no hits in that stretch, but hopefully he's starting to revert back to the patient contact hitter he was a year ago, in which case the hits will come.
  15. Look at it this way. At least we're not giving Bay the equivalent of a $1M per year lifetime pension.
  16. They're not really pitching to Reyes, are they? OE: After ball 1, they come to their senses. Up to you, Willie.
  17. Not what I'd have done, but I'll take the result. Now let's win this.
  18. Are we really walking Coghlan to pitch to Hanley?
  19. Dunn was a Yankee prospect in 2009. He was traded to the Braves in the Javier Vazquez deal (snicker), and then traded to Florida with Infante for Uggla (he's the only one of three who's doing anything). K-Rod only took one pitch to get my ulcers going.
  20. I didn't realize Dunn was a Yankee last year. That almost makes me feel better. At least Murphy made contact.
  21. Izzy strikes me as more overanxious than hung over. He's been rushing his fastballs and falling behind a few too many batters, but he got the outs tonight.
  22. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I think Gary just obliquely suggested that most "kids who text" are stoners. I thought that myself. Sad, huh? The less we see of Mike Dunn, the better. The celebrated infield combo of Harris to Turner to Murphy almost turned a nice two there. At least we got the lead runner.
  23. Edgy DC wrote: I'll give Terry one day to reconsider playing Murphy at third. Unfortunately, right now the roster has more players with experience at third than at first. And Wright might still be back before Davis.
  24. I'd trade Bay to the Yankees before I'd trade Beltran. Sure, Bay's under contract for at least two more years, but that's the problem. That, and I'm confident that Beltran is better than Fernando Martinez right now. We may well wind up loaded with pitchers in 2013, but parting with Pelfrey before then would do too much short-term harm I think. If he pitches well enough to bring back something valuable in the meantime, we'd be contenders with him. Keep in mind that two wins against Florida would put us at .500 and within three games of the wild card, with a lot of baseball to play. I'd listen if somebody was desperate enough to ask about Bay or Rodriguez, because I think the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term risks, and because I think we could absorb the losses. Otherwise, I'm conceding nothing.
  25. I was thinking about that myself, especially since I had the most averse reaction to it. Yes, there is evidence to back that claim up now, although I still don't think it was fair back then. I felt at the time that you could justify that kind of statement if Dickey's ERA was north of 4.50 on Memorial Day, but anything before that was premature, especially in ST. (I mean, Scott Hairston looked like a major league hitter nine weeks ago.) Unfortunately, right now it would be a good thing if Dickey can get to 4.50 by Memorial Day. The knuckler also doesn't appear to have consistent movement the way it did last year, so I do think it's at least as much Dickey as the league as a whole.
