  1. A different era. Neither of them had the ego that Rodriguez has, and they had a manager who wouldn't stand for it if they did. Plus the matchups generally dictated who got used when, while Rodriguez and Axford are basically the same pitcher (righthanded, high K and high BB). Roenicke will have to decide between keeping both pitchers happy (assuming that's even possible) and keeping the controversy from becoming a distraction.
  2. Show me a team that has two closers and I'll show you a team that has none. Roenicke needed to make a definitive decision so that the move helps the team more than it hurts, and it appears he's done the opposite of that.
  3. The PTBNL rule is that the players involved cannot stay in the same league as the one they were playing in. It's an odd rule whose rationale I can't figure out -- among other things, it means that an AL team could send us a major league PTBNL but an NL team can't. I guess we'll find out. K-Rod, like Wagner, will cost the Brewers $3.5M. He'd be a Type A if they offered him arbitration, but he'd be an awfully expensive setup guy. (I'm assuming Axford remains the closer at least until the option is no longer likely to vest.) My guess is we'll get a package like the one we got for Wagner.
  4. If we can score three runs each game, we'll sweep.
  5. It would have been a great deal for the Marlins a month ago when they were ahead of Atlanta. Now? I'm guessing they think that a couple of weeks of full-time play will up his trade value to the point where they turn a profit.

I'm sorry if I inserted something personal that I haven't talked about here at an inappropriate time; it's just that I'm going through all those anxieties and fears right now, and this hits really close to home.
  7. Some things are bigger than baseball. I've spent the past nine months getting first-hand experience with pregnancy, and I can fully appreciate how alive the child is to the parents at that stage.
  8. He deserves another chance.
  9. The entire lineup is on a hot streak right now. I'm not sure if anybody besides Reyes can sustain it, but I guess we'll see.

  11. Selig vetoed the Fox deal because a lot of that money was designated to go to the McCourts, and not to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The long and short of it is that the McCourts have been spending more money than they actually had, and used the Dodgers' revenues to pay for their debts.
  12. How many triples did that team hit?
  13. Willie Harris would make more sense at this point. But Lutz has 24 Ks in 85 ABs, so don't get your hopes up if he does get the call.
  14. Yes, they changed managers towards the end of a 1-13 skid that made the Marlins jealous.
  15. Why? You're one good week out of second place.
  16. The Cardinals just lost. We could still be 2 1/2 games out of a playoff spot after tonight.
  17. Izzy does his part.
  18. I actually find it reassuring that Collins is not managing to K-Rod's contract.
  19. I had posted a couple of days ago that Hairston's numbers had climbed up to respectability while nobody was looking. His OPS for the year is probably over .800 with the homer. That being said, he had a horrible AB against Venters (swinging and missing at three pitches out of the strike zone). Uggla's terrible relay (assisted by Turner's slide) gives us some insurance!
  20. Pagan didn't touch the bag, but they could have just as easily called obstruction because Freeman tripped him.
  21. The Rays also just released Chris Carter, who had an opt-out clause if he didn't get called up by now.
  22. If Kazmir were smart he'd give up this season for lost and figure out what it would take to salvage his arm, assuming it's even salvageable. (He's not the only lefty ex-Met who should have gone that route.) Otherwise, give the Rays credit for buying low and selling high, and then move on.

I wonder if Tejada at 3rd and Murphy at 2nd is a stronger defensive alignment. Or Muffy at 1st, Harris at third and Duda in LF. At any rate, shitty D at the corners, but Niese is our best K man. Murphy is hard to figure sometimes. He had a lot more minor league experience at third base than Turner, and yet Turner looks perfectly comfortable there. It's not like Harris hasn't made a costly misplay at third, either. I actually like getting Murphy back out there.
  24. This pocket schedule is brought to you by the letter A.
