  1. Assigned? I hope you mean optioned. Assigned in baseball parlance technically means he's no longer on the major league roster. Later
  2. ="Gwreck"] ESPN or NAACP aren't really acronyms (they're initialisms), because when spoken, they aren't said as "ess-pin" or "naah-cip," you say "E-S-P-N." You learn something new here every day. I had never heard that word before. Thanks. Later
  3. Willets Point wrote: ="MFS62"] When I was a kid, I liked Chuck Yeager.(still do) Me too. I went through an obsession with aviation and space exploration history when I was in Junior High and must have read Yeager's biography 5 times. On one wall of the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, the names of hundreds of aviators are inscribed. But they have the pictures of only four in the center of that exhibit - Wilbur and Orville Wright, Amelia Erhardt(sp?) and Chuck Yeager. If you haven't been there, go. (Its at Wright Patterson AFB, admission free) Its ten times better than the Air Museum in DC. They have at least one of every aircraft that was operational in the Air Force (including all experimental planes) and the "enemies" of those that saw combat. (e.g.- A Bf-109 next to a Mustang and a MIG -15 next to an F-86) They also have every retired Air Force One, including the one that brought JFK's casket back to Washington. Later
  4. Bad deal. We ended up keeping him too long. Then we got nothing for him. SC= 9.6 Later
  5. Bret Sabermetric wrote: Don't go implying that Mets fans are stoopid. As the proud originator of "SC= " I can assure you the scale is 1-100. 1) I didn't mean to imply that. 2) Thanks for clearing that up. I don't care what anybody else says about you (there have been rumors), you're OK Bret. Thanks. Later
  6. The NL pitcher who sees the oppposing pitcher come to bat against him twice in the first inning is having a bad day. LAter
  7. May have posted these before: Steve Small was last year's Yankee version of what Terry Leach was one year for the Mets. Terry emerged from total obscurity (minors, major league middleman) to become an emergency starter. IIRC he won his first nine starts and was 10- when the starters got healthy, and he was sent back to the bullpen without a whimper. Jim Bouton came out of the bullpen and pitched seven innings in an extra-inning affair for the Yanks against Detroit. That proved that he could be a starter, and the Yanks put him in the rotation. I guess making all that costume jewelry was good for his arm. Later
  8. For the posting of additional memories of ballplayers mentioned in the WTHIHK thread, without spoiling the flow of that thread. Even when he first came up, Kuenn looked fat in his baseball card pictures. Candelaria was from New York, was tall enough to be a basketball player, ugly enough to be a Randy Johnson stand-in, and married a woman much older than he was. Bob Murphy was always careful to pronounce Red Schoendinst's last name with three syllables. (SHOW-en-dinst) rather than the two (SHANE-dinst) other announcers used. My wife thought Steve Yeager was hot. When I was a kid, I liked Chuck Yeager.(still do) Later
  9. SC = Sarcastic Content Assigned by the poster. We have not, to my knowledge, come to agreement on the official range of values yet (1-10 or 0-100). Later

  12. ]When I stink, I just stink You'd never hear Jeter admit that. And that's why I like A-Rod. Later
  13. Scully became my inspiration for something he doesn't say. He never uses the term "sacrifice fly" because he personally believes that if a batter is trying to hit the ball as hard as he can (it reached the outfield, didn't it?), he should not be credited with a sacrifice. The batter isn't giving himself up to advance a runner, which is what he believes a sacrifice is all about. Instead, he calls it a "scoring fly". After hearing his logic - never uttering baseball-related words he finds repugnant, I have chosen to do the same. Therefore, I never say, or type three things: The name of the over-the-hill shortstop the Mets received in return for Nolan Ryan. The name of that American League rule (or the player/ person) that allows the substitution of another player in the batting order for a team's pitcher. The nicknames of the two teams that left New York for the West Coast. I only refer to them by their city names. I continue to associate those nicknames with only New York and Brooklyn. It just makes me feel better. Thank you, Vin. Sorry you had to go West with that team. Later
  14. Good Job. They've got Pat the Bat. Has anyone come up with a nickname for Utley? Chase the mace? Later
  15. metirish wrote: If you are going to attempt to steal third with 2 outs you fucking better make it....apparantly the punishment for failing to make it is rather cruel. Irish, I beleive that is a corollary of the famous admonition: "don't make the first out or the third out of an inning at third base". Later
  16. Now we know why they named it the Rolaids Award. Later
  17. I've heard several announcers (ex-ballplayers) say,"The pitch they throw you on a 2-2 count is the same pitch you'll see on 3-2". Since I first heard that and started paying attention to it, it seems to me that it is true about 90% of the time. Are there any others you've heard that seem to be true? Later
  18. Justin Huber was sent down to AAA by KC. If he can't stick with that squad, how good can he really be? EDIT: And the Yanks have just brought up ex-Met prospect Terrence Long. Later
  19. Although I'm hoping they won't get the record, KC has the best shot. In case you didn't notice yesterday's box scores, Doug Mientkiewicz is hitting third for them. 'Nuff said. Later

  21. If I'm Pedro (Poor Bastard) Martinez, and I see Billy Wagner coming in to "protect" another one of my leads, I'm gonna' do a Nancy Kerrigan on him. Later
  22. A Jack Reed moment. Jack Reed: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/jack-reed.shtml A Yankee scrub. His only major league homer won an extra inning game for the Yankees against the Tigers. IIRC, that was a game in which Jim Bouton went seven innings in relief and showed the Yankees he should be a starter. Later
  23. This is such a weird game. The Mets will probably win on an Endy Chavez homer. This was all my fault. I went out to do som,e stuff around the house before the top of the ninth. I accept all blame. Later
