  1. Let's call it the Robert A. Mandt Memorial Hall of Fame Achievement Award. I remember listening to the results of the expansion draft (that cereated the original Mets) on the radio. I didn't care about the Yankee history, either. Edgy, our award could not be better named. Later
  2. When we all relax a bit and think about this year, the team finished near .500 with two key starters, the regular shortstop and left fielder missing substantial time on the DL. While we have pointed out many in-game decisions we disagreed with, the fact that he kept the team together and won as many games as he did, IMO, puts Jerry in the category of a Joe Torre kind of manager - better in the clubhouse than in the dugout. That's probably the way I'll remember him. Later

  5. Adam Rubin on his ESPN blog is saying the same. Both have been "relieved of their duties". Press conference at 1:30. Later
  6. If I'm sitting un the upper deck behind home plate and look at the scoreboard, I don't have tunnell vision. I also can see what is behind or around the scoreboard. For that reason, I like Baltimore (that classic looking warehouse) and Atlanta (a beautiful view of the downtown lit up at night). But there is nothing better than the Fenway Park scoreboard - missing score numbers (for the local games an out of town ones) and all. Name another scoreboard that is surrounded by a wall that has its own nickname. To me , that scoreboard is as much a part of baseball as the team that plays in that ballpark. Later

  8. Rays, bayyybeeeee. That's a tribute to Rays fan Dick Vitale. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Dick-Vitale-says-his-Rays-are-a-Cinderella-like?urn=mlb-109574 I want to see Bud Selig interviewed in a half empty stadium during the World Series opener. Later
  9. I want to see Tony Oliva throw out the ceremonial ball in the alcs.* Later * = I don't know why I said that. It was the first thing that came to mind.
  10. I voted Reds, but I think the Phillies would be the best possible National League World Series representative. 'Tis a quandry. Later
  11. Edgy DC wrote: Personally, I like continuity. And I like to see equity built up in service to the organizaiton rewarded. But that's not the only way to go. Exactly. The reason a GM gets fired is generally* because someone in a higher position thinks he has made poor personnel decisions. If that is true, then why should the GM's replacement come from a group of persons who that GM decided to hire? Later * does not include boffing the secretary of a road team or other pecadillos that have embarassed the major league club.
  12. After last night's game, Jerry was interviewed on WFAN and said that from what they've seen of the improvement in Thole's swing while he's been up with the big league club, Thole hitting 15 home runs next year wouldn't surprise him. Later
  13. The original article already out of date because Mattingly DID replace Torre in LA. Given that, Don Baylor is going to rack up a lot of air miles interviewing for those "12-15" managerial openings because, on a quick read, he is the only "minority candidate" mentioned (I may have missed others). Later

They did deal with Les Expos' spot in the standings and the talent of their roster at the time of the strike and how it killed their season, but then didn't seem to think that the long-term affects needed saying. There had been hockey strikes 1992-1994 of various durations. The fans returned. I guess hockey was more intrenched than baseball. And the strike toppled baseball interest over the edge. Later
  15. Vic Sage wrote: I'd rather he hit 2nd than 7th. So do I. Also- he has a 46% CS rate. Yes, its a small sample size, but I'm guessing it is one of the best ratios in the majors. And when you consider he is catching a knuckleball pitcher every fifth day, that is really impressive. Later

    2011 Roster

For a while a few games back, Ike's numbers were very similar to Murphy's until Ike got hot again. Now Ike has moved ahead. But not by very much. Ike Davis:.797 OPS http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/davisik02.shtml Daniel Murphy: .768 OPS http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/murphda08.shtml I hope Murphy can make it back and play second. The rainout yesterday leaves the Mets without a starter on Saturday. Pelfrey today and Sunday Neise and Dickey for the Wednesday doubleheader Gee and Misch on Thursday and Friday Ollie on Saturday ? It would be very interesting. Later

Last night ESPN tried to engineer their roster more than you can imagine. During the post game celebration, they were interviewing the players. When Sweeney was being interviewed, they put up a graphic that said "DH - Mike Sweeney". Don't those guys even know the Phillies play in the National League? Sheesh! Later
  19. I would prefer that the team channel any aggressive tendencies they have toward the opposition, as in some payback for cheap shots like the Utley slide. Edgy, that was a great last sentence. It would earn you an A in any Creative Writing class I can imagine. Well done. Later

If I'm going to be in a bar fight, I want Carter on my side. Look at those eyes. He could play a serial killer on a TV cop show. Later
