  1. I listened to the game on the radio. They said that in the entire history of the post season, prior to this game, a pitcher has pitched seven innings or more with 10 Ks and no walks only six times. And Lee had done it three of those times. Now it must be four of seven for Lee. What a great mid year pickup for the Rangers. Later
  2. They heard there were tickets available in Tampa Bay. Later

  4. I picked the Phillies. (Waiting for the booing to die down) I think they can best represent the NL in the World Series. Yeah, SF has good pitching. But IMO they have just enough to lose a lot of WS games 2-1 and 1-0. That team just can't hit. The Phillies have just as much good pitching, and, gasp, a potent offense. Sorry, Pholks. I'm rooting for the Phillies to win, and then positively smoke their AL opponent in the WS. Then I'll happily go back to rooting against them next year. LAter

Sherman is usually anti-Met. This must be part of a plot to finally destroy the Mets, Alderson really being on the payroll of the Yankees. Later

  7. Hahn's expertise blends a firm grip of sabermetrics and physical scouting of players. He is a Michigan graduate and has a Harvard law degree and graduated from Northwestern's Kellogg graduate school of management. Prior to joining the White Sox in 2002, Hahn was an agent at Steinberg, Moorad and Dunn sports agency in Newport Beach, Calif., for two years. His expertise in negotiating contracts and learning the scouting end of the game was essential in the White Sox promoting him to a vice president post in 2007. He worked for a sports agency under Jeff Moorad? I'd love to be a fly on the wall during one of his negotiation sessions with a player's agent as a GM. It would be like "Spy VS Spy", each one having a black bag full of weapons. I'm chuckling just thinking about it. Also- isn't at least one of the Wilpons a Michigan grad? Later
  8. I voted "other". But I have no bloody idea who else I would want. I'll have to read more about their credentials. EDIT: OK, I know who I would like, Pat Gillick. He's now working for the Phillies. Yeah, I know. When he was in Seattle, we heard that he hated the Mets and was always trying to fuck them in deals. Gillick wasn't trying to fuck them. He was just a better GM than any GM he was talking to. As a result, he was able to fuck them. But I don't think it was out of a hatred for the team. As Michael Corleone said, "It was business, Sonny, not personal." If the Mets can get permission from the Phillies to talk to him, I'd do it. He has built contenders in Toronto and Philadelphia. On the radio during the 4th inning, Dave "Soup" Campbell asked "I wonder if Don Larson is watching?" How prophetic was that? Late

  12. Mike Schmitt hit .196/.323/.373/.687 before his breakout year. I would love the Mets to catch lightning in a bottle like that one day, and I think Duda is the one who could do that. As I said, it probably wouldn't happen, and it really depends on the health of Bay and Beltran. Based on those results, Pagan might be a regular outfielder anyhow. Just trying to think out-of-the-box. Later

Later Is it safe to assume that once one stops laughing at jokes like this you become the butt of them? At work I already am the butt of them. But that one was really funny. So I'll leave kicking his ass to someone else. Later
  14. Just wondering. Jason Bay has played centerfield in the majors, so he has a decent srm (double figures in outfield assists a few years). I know his range has decreased, so CF wouldn't be a good thing at CitiField. But what about playing him in right field, with Duda in left? Beltran would start the season in center, with Pagan getting a lot of action as the 4th outfielder. And if Beltran couldn't make it/ was traded, Pagan would play center. I know. The organization will probably do the conservative thing and start Duda at AAA. But he showed me that he made enough adjustments by the end of the year that starting him with the big league club would be intriguing. Later

  19. Got a reply from the email I sent the author to let her know that Maddox also played for the Mets. Hi ---, Glad you liked the story. I did know Maddox played for the Mets, but he also played for four other teams, so I felt it was simpler to just mention the Yankees. Lisa The next question is, does this qualify her as a YLDB? Or do we give her a pass on this one? Later
  20. A Met MVP And an ERA king And meaningful games in the Fall. (surpressing "later" for continuity)
  21. As seen on the Inside Pitch board: And wikipedia. I didn't notice the person there cite Wiki as his reference. I saw it on IP, so that's the reference I gave. Later
  22. The worst black mark against Ryan was waiving David Ortiz just before he exploded into a monster. He also traded FOR Boof Bonzer. I'd call that at least a dark grey mark. Seriously, he got some other very good pitchers in that trade. As seen on the Inside Pitch board: Notable trades July 6, 1995: Traded closer Rick Aguilera to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Frank Rodriguez and a player to be named later. The Twins were able to re-sign Aguilera on December 11. July 7, 1995: Traded pitcher Scott Erickson to the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Scott Klingenbeck and a player to be named later. July 31, 1995: Traded pitchers Kevin Tapani and Mark Guthrie to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Ron Coomer, pitchers Greg Hansell and Jos Parra, and a player to be named later. The Dodgers sent outfielder Chris Latham to the Twins on October 30 to complete the trade. August 29, 1996: Traded Dave Hollins to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later. On September 31, the Mariners sent David Ortiz to the Twins to complete the trade. August 20, 1997: Traded Roberto Kelly to the Seattle Mariners for players to be named later. On October 9, the Mariners sent the Twins future all-star Joe Mays and a minor leaguer to complete the deal. February 16, 1998: Traded second baseman Chuck Knoblauch to the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder Brian Buchanan, shortstop Cristian Guzman , pitcher Eric Milton, pitcher Danny Mota, and cash. May 21, 1999: Traded Rick Aguilera and Scott Downs to the Chicago Cubs for pitchers Kyle Lohse and Jason Ryan . December 13, 1999: Under the Rule 5 Draft , the Twins sent minor leaguer Jared Camp and cash to the Florida Marlins in exchange for future Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. September 9, 2000: Traded pitcher Hector Carrasco to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Lew Ford. July 30, 2001: Traded outfielder Matt Lawton to the New York Mets for pitcher Rick Reed. December 3, 2003: Traded pitcher Eric Milton to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitcher Carlos Silva, infielder Nick Punto, and a player to be named later (Bobby Korecky). December 2, 2005: Traded Travis Bowyer and Scott Tyler to the Florida Marlins for second baseman Luis Castillo. December 9, 2005: Traded J.C. Romero to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for infielder Alexi Casilla. July 30, 2007: Traded second baseman Luis Castillo to the New York Mets for minor league prospects Drew Butera (catcher) and Dustin Martin (center fielder). Later
  23. Public speaking. From my local paper. With an ex-Yankee, too. http://www.newstimes.com/default/article/Players-discuss-being-Jewish-in-the-major-leagues-686189.php I sent the author an e-mail to remind her that Eliott played for both the Mets and the Yankees. Later

  25. Let's call it the Robert A. Mandt Memorial Hall of Fame Achievement Award. I remember listening to the results of the expansion draft (that cereated the original Mets) on the radio. I didn't care about the Yankee history, either. Edgy, our award could not be better named. Later
