  1. I first heard his name when he came up to the majors as an infielder. (Maybe the Phillies?) Not the greatest ability, but from the beginning, was described as a "smart" ballplayer. In his acceptance speech when elected to the Hall of Fame, he said (I paraphrase) "I was lucky to manage a lot of great players. I just got out of their way and let them play." A lot of other managers have probably done that over the years, but he smilingly admitted it. He was more than a smart player. Sounds like he was a smart person, too. RIP, Sparky. We'll miss you. 2011 Roster

Nice job, Edgy, but the pitching and batting coaches are switched. I hope Luis Hernandez sticks as a reserve infielder. Anyone who can break his foot, continue the at-bat, hit a homer and then limp around the bases has earned a spot on my team - any time. And I'm hoping Alderson, being an ex-Marine will appreciate that toughness. Later
  3. That was my point. Sometimes, stuff just happens. And you point about good home grown pitching is well taken. Later
  4. Benito Santiago. Later
  5. Probably one of the worst teams of this generation to win a world championship. Renteria, Burrell, Sanchez, Huff all had and OPS under .700 last year. The starting CF'er is a 32 y/o career .250 hitter, pound for pound probably the worst starting CFer in baseball, well excluding Aaron Rowand. And I guess Cody Ross could pass as mediocre. As ESPN radio guy Colin Cowherd exaggerated, you probably couldn't find most of them in Wikepedia. What is the impact of them winning? They might have set back the cause of advanced baseball metrics by about 50 years. Sometimes, you have to look outside the numbers, eh? Later
  6. The players voted Derek Jeter a full series share because he was such an inspiration to all of them. OK, I'll say it now, before you read it written by the reporters who will think they're so clever: "Good pitching stops good hitting". Later
  7. In each Sunday's Raissman column in the NY Daily News, he names his "Dude of the Week. This week, it's Selig: Bud Selig For paying for the funeral and burial of Bill Shannon, the veteran official scorer who died Tuesday in a fire in his West Caldwell, N.J. home. When the commissioner found out about this tragedy, and the need for funds, he didn't hesitate to say his office would pickup the check. Seligula wasn't the only one who wanted to make sure Shannon, a respected member of the NY baseball fraternity, was given a proper send-off. The Yankees also reached out. Selig told pinstripe execs that since they are the games' biggest revenue donor they are "essentially" helping pay for Shannon's funeral. Nice "Thanks, but no thanks", Bud. Later

  10. From Klapisch: http://www.northjersey.com/sports/pro_sports/baseball/103010_Klapisch_Billy_Beane_says_Sandy_Alderson_is_perfect_guy_to_lead_Mets.html He took some typical Klaptrap shots, but I'm glad to see Sandy will be bringing in Depodesta and also thinks highly of Backman. Other writers and talking heads have been saying that Wally isn't the kind of manager Sandy could work with. Later
  11. When I was a kid, I loved the old serial films, both on tv and atthe movies on Saturday. Each "thrilling episode" ended with a cliff-hanger, to be resolved atthe start of the next episode with either a diffferent camera angle or some downright revisionist history. SW III was the logical extension of the Flash Gordon movies, just as Indiana Jones was the logocal extension of Time Tyler's Luck, with a little Zorro and Gene Autry's Radio Ranch thrown in for good measure. When I saw the first Indy movie, I loved it, and couldn't help think where a director might have ended an episode and how the situation might be resolved next week. But SW III brought back some great memories. Years later, when I joined my present company, I looked around the Customer Service department and thought they could have cast the bar scene there. Later
  12. I voted Oberkfell. But I would be equally as happy with Hurdle. I hope they don't try to pass off Maz as a "true Met" after he became a turncoat for the MFYs. Later
  13. a power-hitting third baseman ......, has signed with the Mets. Sanchez, 16, is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound righthanded hitter A third baseman sixteen years old and that size already? I'm not sure if he's the replacement for David Wright, but they may have the replacement for Butch Huskey. Later
  14. To close out the game, it wasn't exactly a Hallmark moment - SF didn't care enough to send their very best. Later
  15. I guess All-Star pitchers can only get out All-Star hitters. Later
  16. That is the same paper that thought it was funny when they fired a sportswriter and the headline was "__________ __________ Put on Waivers". (I just went blank on his name, but he also used to work in New York and did boxing commentary on tv matches) Later
  17. Fman99 wrote: Mad Dog thinking out loud figured on the open (non-MFY) market he'd get a 1 year, 6-7 million deal with an option. OK, so that was Mad Dog, so we have to consider the source. BUT. Let's say Cashman plays realistic hardball and doesn't make an offer, or Jeter gets pissed off at a lowball try and says he wants to listen to offers from other teams. If you are a GM of another major league team, do you offer Jeter a contract? If yes, how much money per year? How many years? If no, why not? Later
  18. Just heard on WFAN update that Bobby V is a finalist for the Milwaukee managerial spot. Also, earlier today on ESPN radio I heard Curt Schilling say that the new Jays manager, Farrell, is (close paraphrase) "One of the smartest baseball men I've ever met. He is a sure-fire future GM." Later
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Almost. There's no minimum salary for General Managers. The Mets would have to pay him a "reasonable" salary. (They couldn't give him an honorary $1-a-year contract, for example.) But Byrnes will make the same income whether he works for the Mets next year or spends his time playing golf. Then if the Mets hire Byrnes, I can just see the papers now - saying that the Mets made a decision based on money rather than on ability. And even if they feel he is the best candidate - the "cheap" stigma will be attached to the choice. Yuk. Later
  20. When a player with a long team contract is released, the team that picks him up only has to pay the pro-rated minimum salary- the player's original team is on the hook for the rest of the contract. Is it that way for all baseball salaries? Byrnes is currently signed to a multi-year contract with his present club. I wonder if the same thing would be in effect. Later
  21. Benjamin Grimm wrote: How is this a "cheap shot"? Andy Martino's last paragraph wrote: The gulf is wide between those two teams, but something very subtle has shifted toward the Mets since the regular season ended. The Phils are hoping to extend a sublime era, while the Mets are working to build one. In a cyclical game, those underlying changes might not surface in the standings for years - but they will eventually surface. Oops. I meant the paragraph above it. Remember all that whining in the Mets' locker room last month when Utley slid hard and late into Ruben Tejada? Privately, some Phils players are still mocking David Wright, who chirped about the incident but did nothing, and Beltran, who slid hard once, hit no one, and reverted to passivity. I find that quite out of place in an article about what the Phillies need to rebound. Later
  22. And Andy Martino chimes in with a cheap shot (last paragraph), too. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/2010/10/25/2010-10-25_giant_bust_for_phillies.html Later
  23. Looking back on this series, the only thing I regret was that flat-hat Joba didn't take more of a pounding. Later
  24. Ashie62 wrote: Got this email from Bondy after emailing him on his 10/14 article. Ted: Yanks ask Rangers not to overuse Lee in World Series. Arrogantly yours, Filip I want him to be tied to a chair in a warm, humid roon, his eyelids taped open, and forced to watch game 6 on a continuous loop for, say, ten years. Later
  25. I remember reading that article when it was written and thinking "I hope the Rangers win, then tape that article to a brick and shove it up Bondy's ass." Figuratively, they just did. Later
