  1. I listened to several Buffalo games last year in which he pitched more than one inning. I don't consider him just a LOOGY. Later

Frayed Knot wrote: Not that that means some sort of offer is imminent or that they're going to top the 3/$45 Yanqui deal if they do, but it is the first team mentioned since they told Derek that he should act like Smokey and 'Shop Around' Actually, the Yankees have listened to Jeter's agent's demand, and told Derek to act like a (an?) hermaphrodite and go fuck himself. Later
  3. I was geting ready to talk about how many of the Mexican teams play at altitudes far above sea level, so its hard to throw breaking ball in the thin air (like Denver, Colorado). Then I googled Culiacan and found out it is less than 200 feet (55 meters)above sea level. So I hold my judgement about Ollie's performance. Later

I would guess Young could come cheaper at this point. Last clocked throwing 85-86 too. I'm not too concerned with fastball speed as long as the pitcher can change speeds and has decent command. I don't think Rick Reed, Bobby (righty)Jones or Steve Traschell consistently touched 90 MPH (if at all). But they were pretty serviceable or better starters. Worth an incentive laden contract, IMO. Maybe he can fool 'em until Santana returns or until Mejia or Gee is ready to step into the rotation full time. If his velocity improves, even better. Later
  5. Nay. I'd rather remember the Alamo. Later
  6. Edgy DC wrote: Jamie Moyer. That's not fair. Moyer has been managed by every manager since Connie Mack. Later
  7. I remember sitting in the upper deck right field stands with my friends when the Mets played SF. We kept yelling at the right fielder "Hey Alou! Which Alou are you?" Later
  8. Can't find a link for it, but earlier today, both WFAN and ESPN (NY) were saying that Fernando Martinez injured his leg (knee?) and has been shut down for Winter Ball. He's beginning to have an Alex Escobar "snake bit" feel about him. Later
  9. metirish wrote: As much as I would love the outcry if he went to another team I am taking the long term view that him playing absolute crap for the MFY's is better.....stay old you yankees Absolutely agree. I want to hear three (hopefully more) years of anguished Luis Castillo or Ollie Perez-type calls to WFAN moaning about "why the Yankees ever re-signed this turd". Later

Y'know, I had ths feeling when the Mets got rid of Scuttaro that one day he would become as least as good as Derek Jeter. Later

  12. Bristol was a loser yesterday, too. Later
  13. And then there was Eddie Stanky. Baseball-reference says one of his nicknames was Mugsy. The infielder had played for Brooklyn. But when he became a New York Giant, Brooklyn fans called him Stinky. Later
  14. I wish him well in his reassignment in the organization. But I hope it isn't a minor league batting instructor position. IMO, Johnson was hired because he had name recognition. Then he got a lot of fan support because of his name. There have been quotes that he is a hard worker. (sorry, don't have any links, because I'm using this to set up the punch line) But since he has been in his current position, there hasn't been any clear evidence of any tangible ability to do what he's supposed to do. You know, sort of like Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars. Later
  15. My Conspiracy Theory: Jeter has already agreed on a contract with the Yankees, if not already signed it. But it has not been announced yet, so the Yankee writers could have something to write about while the Mets have been searching for a manager. Later
  16. Edgy DC wrote: Well, he hasn't been asked back yet, so I don't see how he's shown himself to be invulnerable. I don't remember seeing his name among those whose contracts expired November 1. Nor was his name among those who have been formally announced as fired. And that leads me to think he's still around, even if informally. Later
  17. Where did Howard Johnson buy his Teflon coat? Later
  18. I'm whelmed. I wish him luck. Later
  19. Edgy DC wrote: So, being a Yankee means CC Always has the league's top offense supporting him.NEVER has the league's top offense opposing him. Such pressure this poor man works under. Won't you please help? Edgy, you convinced me. I have just made a donation to the "Shut the fuck up, CC didn't win it" foundation. Later
  20. I wonder what kind of sexual favors a pitcher with a career 5.83 ERA offers to his GM so he doesn't get traded to Denver. Obviously this guy didn't offer enough. Later
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: Meanwhile over in the AL - the sense of humor ballot gives a 3rd place vote to Girardi What sense of humor? A guy really has to manage his arse off when he is in a small market and his GM has limited resources, like Joe did. The voter must have given Joe the vote because he felt so sorry for him. (Damn! Smoke pouring out of the back of the sarcasm meter.) Later
  22. Welcome abordick. Gotta' be a story behind that screen name, demons. What is it? Later
  23. You forgot a color for the "Yeah, he got 3,000 hits and got into the Hall, but he probably wouldn't have if that fucking DH rule hadn't prolonged his career with some of his best offensive years" as in Paul Molitor. And, I would have thought Bill Mazeroski would have been in there with the "Primarily defense" color. But I couldn't find him at all. Was that an editorial decision, an oversight, or did I just miss him? Other than that, well done. Later
  24. Here's a reporter who doesn't know anything except Mets-bashing, our old friend Madden: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2010/11/13/2010-11-13_new_mets_gm_sandy_alderson_should_be_leery_of_hiring_a_recycled_manager_to_take_.html If you hire an "experienced" manager, it means he has managed someplace else and probably has been fired by that team. But you just know that if the Mets hired someone who had never managed in the bigs before, (i.e.- never fired) you know he'd be jumping all over them for trusting a big market team to someone with no experience. Later
  25. Now that they're supposedly down to the "final two", why were they going to interview Jose Oqendo? Is it because neither of those two really excited them that much? Later
