  1. Of course you're correct. Some executive skills are transferrable across industries. They include developing a business plan (with contingencies), setting a budget and managing to that budget. And there have been many women who have broken through the "glass Ceiling" to achieve chief executive positions in many large corporations (Xerox, H-P?) A quick search turned up some others now in baseball: Jamie McCourt - LA Wendy Selig-Prieb - Milwaukee Susan Jason - VP of finance - Marlins Robin Wallace - GM of the indie Nashua Pride The first two on that list are related to the owners. But if you bring in someone from outside baseball, the additional baseball-specific skills I would want in a new GM for the Mets would take time to learn (player evaluation, experience in working with/ knowing the other GMs). That's why I used the term "qualified" - someone who could hit the ground running without a long learning curve. Later
  2. Edgy DC wrote: I don't think it's politically correct, but rather resporting on the facts. Women are and will be among apllicants. I hadn't heard about any other women with the possible qualifications to be a GM in this market. Who are they? For which teams have they have been working? Later
  3. From today's Daily News: If a young candidate can do that, he or she will be considered. I wonder if the "she" is just being politically correct or if a woman would be considered. If so, I'd like to add Kim Ng to our list if she hasn't already been mentioned. http://www.nowpublic.com/sports/dodgers-exec-kim-ng-could-become-baseballs-first-female-gm She has been in a large market, on a team that has not only found and promoted good young players, but has been active in the free agent market as well. Frayed Knot wrote: "I am curious, [about potential interest from the Mets about their managing job]. When the season is over, I hope the phone will be ringing. -- So said Joe Torre to Mike Francesa on yesterday's radio show. We've wondered whether Jeff Wilpon listens to the fans. I hope he never listens to Francessa('s show). Later
  5. Speaking of unis, on WCBS radio the other night, during the sports update, the announcer said "The Mets are leading (I forget the score). But they're going to win, because they are wearing their real, pinstripe, uniforms tonight." That's the kind of guy I want reporting my scores from now on. Later
  6. IIRC several wood bat leagues were looking into banning maple bats last year. I don't recall any specific instances like this one, but maybe it would be a good thing. Later
  7. To me, he was one of those players whose name is forever linked alphabetically on a major league roster with another player. When I think of Twitchell, he is linked in my mind to Scipio Spinks, who preceeded him on the Braves' roster. RIP, Wayne. Later
  8. And Wedge was in Star Wars, Epidodes IV, V and VI. He survived all three final battles. Later
  9. Nice stateside debut, kid. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=villas001edi Stop by the house for some good food. We want to put some meat on that lanky frame so you can get your strikeout totals up. Later
  10. Welcome to the bigs, kid. You're on your own now. I'm kicking you out of the house. But you're always welcome to stop by and pay a visit. Later

Michael Kay was talking about this on his radio show the other day. He was really irate that some of the famous/ retired numbers ( he specified Gehrig) could be used with someone else's name to make a buck. Later
  15. Here's a way to reduce crime. Profile. If you see someone wearing Yankee garb, call the police and have him locked up. Now, if only New York could finally get a Mayor who wasn't a YLD.... Later
  16. After I spent about 10 minutes screaming in frustration at Wayne Hagin for not giving the name of the winning pitcher in the post game wrapup show last night, Steve Sommers made me laugh. He talked about the Jeter incident, saying he's not only trying for an MVP award, but an Oscar, too. He then played clips of the reactions of both John Sterling and Suzyn Waldmann after Jeter got "hit". Both of them said they looked at the replays, and both admitted the ball hit the bat. I guess if they can admit that, then Jeter deserves that Oscar. Later
  17. I listened to the post game show on radio during my drive home from work. I tuned in during the end of Jerry's press conference. He was talking about Mejia's injury. Then, I listened to Wayne Hagin give the out of town scoreboard, then the highlights of the game. All the key (re)plays. But, he never said if Davis was credited with a hit on the smash the "ate up" the Buc player. Oh yeah, and he NEVER told us who was the winning pitcher. NEVER. Might be something we might want to know in a recap, eh Wayne? Especially when we knew that the starter didn't go the requisite five innings. Them whan I just got home and saw who it was, it made me wonder about this official scorer's personal definition of "Briefly and ineffectively". Why was the guy who won awarded the win? His performance that produced that line score was ineffective to me. Did any of the announcers discuss that? Later
  18. While we're waiting for a boilerplate team press release, this seems to be the typical boilerplate used by team bloggers after a loss. Date Score Blogger's name Expression of resigned exasperation with latest result. Acknowledgment that result doesnt matter at this stage of season, yet it is always frustrating to encounter this sort of result. Link to article spelling out game details. Snarky aside. Key example of what went wrong in game. Assertion of saving grace, focusing on how this was just one game and player who committed key example of what went wrong in game will hopefully improve. Snide allusion to disliked secondary players particularly poor performance. Expression of resigned exasperation that big picture is as bleak as latest result. Link to article about newest discouraging development. Passing attempt to project what newest discouraging development means for foreseeable future. Explicit admission that future cant be foreseen but newest discouraging development is indeed discouraging. Weaving together of various recent discouraging developments so as to suggest overarching discouraging trend that makes rooting for team difficult. Allusion to most embarrassing recent discouraging development that constitutes most disturbing manifestation of trend. Link to terrible article illustrating dimwitted coverage of recent discouraging development. Link to good article serving as counterweight to dimwitted coverage. Half-hearted analysis of most embarrassing recent discouraging development (undermined by personal conviction that most recent discouraging development was very much a non-story, yet not commenting on it at all after a few days doesnt feel right, either). Link to archived blog post to demonstrate longstanding pattern of discouraging developments. Conclusion of analysis finding all parties are at least partially at fault (should include at least one point nobody else has made). Assertion of enduring fondness for team in spite of all prevailing evidence that team has become too exasperating to inspire any fondness whatsoever. Expression of dismay that season will soon be over in spite of latest result, recent discouraging developments and bleak big picture. Link to archived blog post from when things were better to serve as reminder that things arent always this bad. Gratuitous reference to Mike Hessman (optional). Later
  19. Animal nicknames were common in baseball (e.g.-"Hawk" Harrelson and "Hawk" Taylor, for their noses), and others for physical attributes. Original Met Frank Thomas was called "Donkey". Some reports said because he was so dumb - he said he could catch any pitcher's best fastball with his bare hands. But other reports said he got that nickname when someone saw him naked in the showers. I'll let you connect the dots on that one. Later
  20. Edgy DC wrote: They wre simply a lefty/righty platoon. Offense-defense was more typical at short, with Johnson-Mitchell/Santana, and later Johnson/Elster, with the sluggers typically playing when there was a pitcher on the mound who elicited strikeouts and flyouts, and they were typically pulled (or moved to third) after seven when the team was leading. I remember that he did that when El Sid was on the mound. He produced large quantities of both. Later
  21. If he keeps progressing, I don't know how they will keep Tejada from the starting spot. If Wally is the manager, he might remember the successful 2B platoon of the teams on which he played. Tejada (defense) and Murphy (offense) could be this generation's Backman and Teuffel. Later
  22. I want it to be Reese Havens. From what I've seen as his progress, he has the biggestupside. Only his health is standing in his way. But that has been a big problem. So, I would be OK with Turner, very OK. Later
