He hit .289 as a 19 year old in AA and .280 in his last full year in AAA at age 20. Then he had a .360 OBP last year for the Mets. He's getting better and better. Who knows? Later
  2. When he was good, he was very, very good. He made us think about what was going on in a different light. He was opinionated about "accepted" baseball strategy. For example, why should a third baseman guard the line in certain situations? He felt he should play in (closer to the batter) to cut down the angles both to his right and to his left. When he was bad, he really wasn't. He became pedantic after a while, as though his mission in life was to educate us about baseball. But he continued to report the game he was watching rather than thanking someone for bringing cannolis to the booth. Good for you, Tim. BTW- for what team did Graham McNamee broadcast? Wasn't he better known as a football announcer? Later
  3. There were many times that we were glad we had a reserve like him who could fill in for extended periods of time for an injured regular. And then there was the fallen Angel, who would do things so bizarre that Wayne Hagin couldn't even find enough words to describe them. Later

The two Mets WS Championship teams didn't exactly have Honus Wagner playing shortstop. They had two defense-first shortstops. (Harrelson and Santana) I think Tejada will be a more than adequate hitter. He's already on the right track. Sandy, build a competitive team around him. Later
  8. The evil in me hopes that MLB will add his theroid medication to the banned substances list. The good in me wishes him well, except when he plays the Mets. The Mets fan in me wants to see what moves will be made to make the team competitive this year, while we wait for the kids to arrive. Later

Yes he was, But I'm not voting for him until Alan gets in. As Dennis Miller used to say, "That's just my opinion and, I may be wrong" I'm also never going to vote for a player who was primarily a DH, as Edgar Martinez was. Maybe if the lords of baseball see that some of the best of those guys never garner many HOF votes, they'll do away with that silly rule. Probably won't happen, but its one of my baseball dreams. 14. Larry Walker (similarity scores include 4 hall of famers - Klein, Mize, Dimaggio and Snider - good enough for me) Lee Smith - yes the rules for saves may have been more lax. But he pitched more than one inning to earn many of his saves, and that extra effort earns him extra consideration in my book. Allan Trammell - should have been voted in long ago. Jeff Bagwell - no scandal? no failed drug tests? no brainer. And his highest similarity score is Carlos Delgado (along with Stargell and Cepeda). Bagwell's entry would make it easier for Carlos to get in. Tim Raines - just a smidgen over the borderline, on the good side. Not this year - Larkin. I know, I know, if he deserves to be in the Hall, then he should be in the Hall. But I'd let Larkin stew in his own juices until the injustice to Trammell has been rectified. Later

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I've nothing to base this on, but I have a gut feeling you'd have to pay Hernandez more to strictly back up than to start; since he made $3 million last year and is coming off a very solid part-time season, that might make him a bit of a luxury. I'm not sure. He's a 38 year old catcher. I think he might be at the point where he's looking to extend his career in a part time role rather than burning it out as a starter. And when he does start, he still can hit and catch. Worth exploring anyhow. Later
  16. I'd go for Ramon Hernandez. Has catching experience in both major leagues, and I believe he still has some gas in the tank. As for mentoring a catcher, I recall a Joe Garagiola story about Yogi Berra. When he first was learning to catch, Yogi said (according to Joe), "Bill Dickey is learning me his experience". Later

  20. IIRC, the Cy Young was institiuted by Ford Frick when he noticed that hitters were winning the majority of MVP awards. It was meant to be a separate award. IMO, a pitcher should win the MVP in the first year a cat wins the Westminster Kennel Club Show. Later

  25. Usually held between games of a double header. They used to award prizes for best one-person, two-person and group banners. Mostly made of poster board stapled to sticks (not really a banner) or bed sheets on poles. Color/ design your option, mainly Mets colors. Let's Go Mets was a common theme. Some graphics. If your banner was considered "off color" you were asked to leave the parade. It was started as a result of fans hanging banners over to facade of the upper deck at the Polo Grounds in 1962. (One famous one that got onto tv for a moment while the camera was panning the crowd was "Fuck O'Malley". The director quickly changed cameras.) Later
