  1. Time heals all wounds, including needle marks. By the time he's eligible for the Hall voting, the Yankees will have had enough time to schedule enough "He's a good guy" events to make most of the voters forget why they would have kept him out. I heard on WCBS that they've already started planning such an event. Later

  3. McMillan. A great defensive shortstop when it was primarily considered a defensive position. Later
  4. I voted the first three choices. But this thread is about baseball cheating? Please accept my write-in vote for Pfuck Roger Clemens. Later
  5. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports: Scott Kazmir is expected to sign with the independent Sugarland Skeeters later this week, Kazmir, a former prized arm, has just about hit rock bottom. The 28-year-old failed to garner so much as a minor league contract over the winter, forcing him to move back to his native Texas and resume his career in obscurity. The former Mets farmhand and Rays stalwart has a 5.54 ERA over 55 major league starts dating back to the 2009 season. If you want to see him play, that team is in the same league (Atlantic) as the Bridgeport Bluefish and the LI Ducks. Later
  6. In Ball Four, Jim Bouton wrote about trying to learn, then master, the knuckler. It made for an interesting read. I've seen many knuckleball pitchers, from Bud Podbelian (Casey called him "Poodlebean") to Hoyt Wilhelm to lefties Bud Daley and Wilbur Wood to the current guys. But I don't recall any of them who threw it as hard, or consistently for strikes, as R.A. Later
  7. Cheap and broke? Then Sandy may be getting ready for some post - planning breakdown planning.* Since the Spring, we've learned the Wilpons aren't as broke as we anticipated. They lost less (maybe even gained) money on the Madoff mess and attendance has been higher then many have predicted. Maybe the purse strings are getting looser. Who knows? But then he'd still have to deal with "cheap". Later * Sandy must have learned the military "6 Ps" (prior preparation prevents piss poor performance).
  8. Miss Rheingold's hair style was very popular back then. and That lineup couldn't score in a school yard. Later
  9. My point wasn't to pick apart his punctuation or syntax, but it's that flowery language of his when describing baseball fields and games which entrances some while it absolutely infuriates non-baseball fans. I wonder what the percentage of each is who read The New Yorker. It wasn't as if he was writing for the NY Post. I was going to say The Sporting News except: 1) The don't cover baseball 2) When they did, they had some very good writers. Later
  10. Edgy DC wrote: I wonder why every system doesn't have three knuckleballers at any given time. The catchers' union has been strongly objecting. Later
  11. Edgy DC wrote: Brandon Nimmo went 0-3, but his eighth inning walk started the two-run rally that led to the win, with him breaking the scoreless tie, coming home on a bases-loaded walk by leftfielder Stefan Sabol, another recent signee. Finally! The Mets have a player who exhibits Jeter intangibles. Later
  12. Well then, I'll cast a right field vote for Ken Singleton. I liked him. Later
  13. metsmarathon wrote: in '63, duke snider played 63 games in right, to 35 in left and 11 in center. i think that qualifies him for right field duty. Then that makes my outfield simple - Ricky, Willie and the Duke. My 1B - Murray, because he pissed off so many apponents and sportswriters, but never a teammate. ss- McMillan - because in his prime he was poetry in motion at short when it was still a defensive position. 2B - Kent - not exactly poetry in motion, but he could really hit. His best hit was on Barry Bonds, which puts him on my list. 3B - Boyer C - Berra SP- righty - Ryan lefty - Spannie. Later
  14. Nymr83 wrote: Clemens should have been put on trial for his assault on Mike Piazza with a broken baseball bat, witnessed by 50,000 people and captured on tape. They should take the shards from Piazza's broken bat and use them to stake the (fat coward, bat tossing,) motherfucker out over an ant hill. Later
  15. Was at work and didn't see the game. Was the hit clean? (Fucking ex-Brave) Later
  16. Excellent KTE. And you get an extra gold star for writing something that long about the Orioles and not mentioning Cal Ripken Jr. Too bad Mark Reynolds is getting hot. He has hit some long taters against the Mets during his career. Later
  17. Shufflin' on up to Buffalo: Later
  18. I couldn't bring myself to watch it either. I saw this thread and checked out the box score. My interest in watching will be like yours, when the games are meaningful to us during a pennant race. Later
  19. Yanks win in 14 innings. Uber-twerp Bryce Harper went 0-7, including the (I don't even know what to call it - diamond crusted platinum?) sombrero with 5 Ks. Later
  20. Over 10,000 fans were there to see MdD's first AAA home run tonight. They were probably there to see the usual Buffalo Friday night fireworks show. But still ... Later
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: And now the A's release Manny before ever promoting him, supposedly at Manny's request. With the Mets now needing a righty hitting left fielder - maybe ....... nahhhh. Later
  22. metsmarathon wrote: i'll say this about jason bay... he's a fucking gamer to always play 100% in the outfield, despite all the injuries. he may not be able to hit the ball anymore, but he sure as hell has tried very very hard in teh outfield. Exactly. And that's why I feel bad for him. His abilities may have deteriorated, but he gives all he has on every play. Later
  23. Fman99 wrote: Good guys not doing so good. My mother in law is here so the wife and I are going to bail and go see a late showing of Prometheus once Fgirl settles in for the night. The Bay injury reminds me of the old definition about mixed emotions - like watching your mother-in-law go over a cliff in your new car. I feel bad for Bay and hope he's ok. Maybe its because he hasn't played enough due to his other injuries so he wasn't familiar with the new dimensions. That said, every at bat he doesn't have (due to injuries) means the last year on his contract is farther away from vesting. I wonder - is there a tribute to Pete Reiser in the Rotunda? Later
  24. He's a good guy. I met him several times. The company I worked for helped turn his business from a 2 man flower shop to the company it is today by providing them with the consulting and technology to build their first call center and offer their products on the Internet. We then helped them expand to multiple centers around the country. Later
  25. The Wilpon-Ross partnership, Queens Development Group, will be handed this land completely free of charge, The only thing Bloomberg asked for in return is some HGH. Later
