  1. The Sporting News still covers baseball? Surprising. Later

  3. As I post this, TOD is leading, 9-6. Yet the comments all contain reasons why folks voted for the other choice. I'd be curious why people voted for TOD. Later
  4. Game report over an admittedly well done picture that would have been more appropriate as the cover for a pull-out section. Not (back page) headline stuff. Later
  5. Again, I go for the hard news/ game report over the "what might be" headline. Later
  6. Hey! 8 posts and I haven't seen a pole dancer yet. False advertising yo. Later
  7. I not only would sign with the Mets, but I'd pay THEM for the privilege. But that's just me. Unfortunately, it isn't him. But he does like New York, so I'd take the short term deal (probably more per year anyhow) to return there. Baltimore fans would be complaining that he's not Davis. But New York fans will be happy that he is Cespedes. And in my gut, I think that love factor is very important to him. Later

  9. You don't see many (if any) pitchers winding up like that anymore. Good stuff. Later
  10. Now we're getting serious. Many years from now, when baseball historians look back on the list of the annual winners in this esteemed contest, the winners should reflect the moments and performances that were crucial to the story of each year. Cast your votes wisely. Later
  11. Vic, your response made me glad I asked the question. Thank you. Later
  12. Centerfield wrote: Do cricket skills translate to baseball that easily? I don't know much about cricket, but it didn't seem all that similar to me. I think the pun was a good one. Better than I can do. Any pun I can make about cricket would involve Jiminy. That's why I posted the link to Andre Rodgers. He had been a cricket player in the Bahamas, and became a pretty good hitter and fielder (shortstop) for San Francisco. But I'm not aware of any other cricketeers who have tried baseball. As for the pun, there's no such thing as a good pun. The best ones make you groan. But that's why I gave him the smiley face. It was pretty good, but I didn't want to encourage him. Later
  13. Holy Andre Rodgers, Batman! http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodgean01.shtml As long as his overs mean over the fence, let's give him a chance. I was going to say give him a shot, but, you know ... And yes, it was a bad pun. Later

  15. Thanks to all of you who were able to come up with some interesting and original ideas. As I've mentioned, I've never been into the uniform thingie, so I'd just go back to the original-as-possible duds and colors. The current owners could do that if they wanted, and wouldn't take someone hitting Powerball to do it. But the primary focus would be to keep the old fans and develop new ones. Keeping the old fans could be accomplished by lowering ticket prices (and parking and food prices, too) and by putting an exciting and competitive team on the field. Operations budgets would be increased to do that, and seats would be added, including more lower priced seats, package deals and a scheduled doubleheader or two (with Banner Day between games of one of them). To get the kids to come, I'd have team busses pick up youth groups (say, of 30 or more) and bring them to the park. I'd open up the gates early, so the kids could get close to the players during batting practice. There would also be scheduled day games during the Summer that kids could attend. But why stop there? I'd build a new minor league stadium on Long Island and lobby with MLB to move the AAA team from Las Vegas when the current contract runs out at the end of the 2016 season, swapping a PCL team with a current International League team to move to the PCL. Bottom line, this is all wishful thinking and fun. But , we can dream, can't we? Later

  17. Probably in partnership with someone like Jerry Seinfeld. (or a group of real Mets fans who have the money) What are the first three things you would do? Later

    The Boy

Yup. The coming attraction freaked me out. No way I'm watching the show. Later
  21. Wagner hangs on, as does Sosa (by a whitened fingernail, at 7.0%). We salute the following departed, in reverse order of votes received: Brad Ausmus, Luis Castillo, Troy Glaus, Mark Grudzielanek, Mike Hampton, Mike Lowell, and Randy Winn (0/0%); Garret Anderson (1/0.2%), Jason Kendall and David F*cking Eckstein (2/0.5%); Mike Sweeney (3/0.7%); NOMAH (8/1.8%); and Jim Edmonds (13/2.5%.) Amazing, and why I believe the writers who say they rely on metrics may not use them all the time: Edmonds > eliminated in his first year of eligibility .284/.376/.527/.903 and 132 OPS+ Junior > near unanimous selection to HOF in his first year of eligibility .284/.370./.538/.906 and 136 OPS+ For those writers, shouldn't it have been closer? Or were those 2.5% of the votes from those writers? Just wondering. Later
  22. This pretty much settles it, doesn't it? Primary team: New York Mets settles that it won't be a Dodgers cap. Could still be blank. I never followed up with the Hall on my idea about a hologram on the cap that changes teams based on the angle from which it is viewed. It would settle all the "which team?" crap. Later
  23. Lefty Specialist wrote: Hard to vote against the wraparound. Yes, but I believe that the back page should be dedicated to game results or a new issue(e.g.- Boxer Found Naked in Movie Theater). It should be an attention grabber. After all, it is a headline. The reporters had been writing all year (well, after the trading deadline and the team got hot) that the team seemed ready to go on an historic run. Putting that on a back page (no matter how well done) is just a self aggrandizing confirmation of what they had already written. Not back page material, IMO. Later
  24. Centerfield wrote: Could do without the "Piazza as a Dodger" highlights though. It's like stumbling upon old pictures of your wife when she was dating someone else. It will be interesting to see the team logo he will wear on his plaque. The player gets to discuss it with the HOF (when he has played substantial time with more than one team) but does not get the final say. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/hat-griffey-piazza-hall-fame-plaque-023237416--mlb.html OE: looks like this was touched on in the HOF voting thread.
