  1. He developed a rep as a mercenary then got done in by signing a contract in his mid-30s he couldn't possibly live up to. More the Dodgers fault than his but I think that's the narrative of his career.
  2. Samuel was one of those fast young Latin guys we theorized beat up their hands, forearms and wrists doing too many head first slides in their early career and not aging well. I know the Phils had had it with him at the time of the trade. That same day the Phils got Dennis Cook, Charlie Hayes and Terry Mulholland in a separate trade with the Giants for Steve Bedrosian iirc. Many of those guys would go to the world series 4 years later.
  3. At the time I recall hoping the guys would just get along and stop all the bullshit, you could tell then that even if he was a struggling guy the team could have been served by the player he turned out to be. Sherm is right about the nature of the game having changed since then. Imagine Conforto or Alonzo arriving to the kind of hostility Jefferies faced. That said I don't recall if Jeff copped to the letter writing at the time. Not like the FAN was all about vetting this stuff and if so what a failure of journos back then too.

Which Gibson, Kirk or Bob? Later Bob. Kirk wasn't in the bigs then not played for the Mets or Cards. Here's the game. 1973! https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN197307261.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN197307261.shtml
  5. There once for an interleague game vs the Tigers. It was the first interleague game I ever saw. Remember listening to a game with my grandfather on the radio, and Gibson hitting a grand slam. That would have been in 76 or so. Not entirely sure it was at Busch.
  6. The first one you have to jump down a line then read the one above it, and of course the notes didn't use certain words for space. So it's "Chief did his war dance at [the] mound last week before [a] game, then began [his] sprint to [his] teepee in [the] left-field bullpen. When we started to run..." Even Stearns in interviews doesn't seem to acknowledge he did this on two separate occasions.
  7. I associate AFCS with the lower case "a" hats and blue-sleeved unis and an era when the Mets and Braves were indifferent opponents and Atlanta was a pretty lousy team with games that were really poorly attended. Then the Torre clubs when they got a little better. Of course there is the John Stearns vs. Chief Nok-A-Homa story, which is one of those things that everyone knows happened but I suspect few people actually remember happening. I was trying to refresh my own memory on this but google doesn't do much good. Jay Horwitz says it happened in 1984: Jay almost certainly isn't right about that. Though it is interesting that the first game Stearns appeared in in 84 was in Atlanta, coming off the DL and appearing as a pinch runner. But he went back onto DL right after that, as he couldn;t throw Lots of Guys On The Internet say it happened in 1977, but there's no corroberation: http://1980toppsbaseball.blogspot.com/2009/07/76-john-stearns.htmlhttp://1980toppsbaseball.blogspot.com/2009/07/76-john-stearns.html So check this out. According to Daily News it happened in 1975 -- and again in 1981! July 18, 1975 http://www.beta.mbtn.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/18_Jul_1975_131_Daily_News_at_Newspapers_com-1024x708.png> Aug. 21, 1981 http://www.beta.mbtn.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/21_Aug_1981_194_Daily_News_at_Newspapers_com.png> There is similar confusion by the way over how many fans Stearns tackled and when. http://www.paperboyarchive.com/2017/08/just-how-many-times-did-john-stearns.htmlhttp://www.paperboyarchive.com/2017/08/just-how-many-times-did-john-stearns.html
  8. Jeesus H, KC, go watch Breaking Away. It might be one of my favorite movies ever, not even slicing it up to "sports movies." We've broken this down before but its nearly perfect. The only issue I really have with it is the too-convenient coincidences of the very same jock villain happening to be the guy whose frisbee they run over, and brawl with in the bowling alley, and whose girl gets involved with Stoller, and who heads the rival bike team. Other than that, a masterpiece.
  9. Got there once for a game during Texas's Arod era, a non-Met game snuck in during a biz trip. Really hot summer night. I had great seats (few rows behind the 3rd base dugout) and was surrounded by people oblivious to the fact there was a game going on. I think about that when talk comes of netting extensions as any number of dummies including some kids coulda got killed. Long walk from the parking lot to the field. Was the same site as a Six Flags park iirc. I do recall Jose debuted there.I associate high-scoring games by the Mets and the Rangers when they play
  10. I think about Art from time to time. He wasn't the right manager for the Mets by any stretch but what got me was how defeated he was when he finished here. He may not have been Billy Squier but managing the 03-04 Mets was his "Rock Me Tonite" video. I don't think he'd even worked in OBB since the Mets fired him in the New York Post then let him hang around for a few weeks His Moneyball film portrayal didn't do his real-life any favors either. The book was fairer to him.
  11. Yikes. Best to Artie
  12. Nobody voted with Richard Conklin but I guess worth pointing out that Johnson was an underachiever in Cashen's eyes. Johnson professed to have like, no relationship with Cashen at all, nor really with the players who were kinda on their own. Really at that time everyone was in their own bubble including Cashen.
  13. Wow, I never knew that I was a witness to history. The game I saw, April 5, 1998, was the first win in Diamondbacks history, after an 0-5 start. Sat very close to the field, but in shallow left. What I recall most were empty seats in front of me, which lots of people tried to occupy all to get kicked out by security. They were trying to catch the ticket holder as they had been stolen.
  14. Ive been there twice for games including iirc one in the first weeks of 98, but neither for a Mets game. Ok joint. Lots of useless empty seats up high in left field, and looks like a warehouse from the outside. I recall Omar Daal pitching one of the games I saw. Will look it up. Remember the Jacobs coming-out. The postseason.
  15. The Last Day show was pretty good for latter day twibbness.
  16. I hafta say, TWIB got worse as it got older, relying more on interviews and less on writing. Gimme 82 or 83 over 86-87
  17. You can hear the Queens accent in Teresa Cucillo's words. What a firecracker! I think I'm going with Wendy Wood, who's pretty cute too
  18. http://www.beta.mbtn.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/19900530.png> As we approach the 30th anniversary of Davey's Johnson's whacking, which citizen's take do you agree with most?
  19. We were at that Gsellman debut which as it turned out was also Niese's last-ever appearance in an MLB game. I'd almost forgotten we'd reacquired Niese from Pittsburgh, but he went onto the DL after that and never returned. Gselly entered in the 2nd after Niese gave away the advantage of a 3-run 1st and held the fort. Flores and Justin Ruggiano hit home runs. It was Beatles Night, as the Cards do what's right and honored the predecessor stadium where the Beatles had also toured. Also nice row of statues out front. They had a pregame concert from a Beatles cover band and played Fab 4 songs between innings. We took a tour of the Stadium that morning, and the guy leading it was nice to visiting pond scum. Got to sit in the home dugout which was nice. Visited the Cards' Hall of Fame which is part of that bank of buildings across the street from center field which has a lot of those touristy plastic-cup sports bars. Busy at game time, ghost town otherwise. The stadium food situation was weird as I recall it, reminding me of a church social with little tables and napkins and stuff. A cranky usher woman badly wounded by our resounding 7-4 victory was shooing us away as I shot Lunchpail in victory formation. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49869534933_9f31d67884.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49870375557_bc386498bc.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49870068721_a6e3e5b316.jpg> Here's Gselly laying down a bunt. Didn't realize at the time he bunted allatime because an injury wouldn't let him swing the bat https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49870431692_a1a6e9c522_b.jpg>
  20. =metsmarathon post_id=36502 time=1588859638 user_id=83] i've twice run through it as part of a disneyland half marathon. otherwise, i ain't got shit.
  21. I remembered the Jerry situation and Reyes home run but whiffed on the Trachsel-Roach story. My other thought was the Marlon Anderson game but that was with the Angels not at em
  22. We streamed the pilot episode of Seinfeld the other night, which as I recall debuted as The Seinfeld Chronicles in 1989. It was more Met-centric than the show you remember, which didn't debut till a year later. There's a prominent Mets poster dead centyer in the apartment and a Mets mug on the counter, and Kramer's first-ever gaffe is spoiling the result of a game Jerry VHSed (not DVRed). Then it hit me that the Mets weren't really joke when they would have written and set and shot it.
  23. I'm watching this too. Want to be sleeping
  24. I'm a Doosan 🐻
  25. I believe you are correct. Here's something from the Mizuno corporate site from 1970s: https://media.mizuno.com/~/media/Images/com/heritage/1972_01_photo_sub.jpg>
