  1. FWIW the 2007 Met media guide clocks the number at 797, yet they list all the names listed in Yancy's ATR page (which is used here! Not sure how that happened, maybe they need a good copy editior! Also, can't recall the name, or the year, there was one name that somehow got into the roster list and was removed the following year, I'll have to comb the books for it. I believe it was very early 1990's.
  2. This was a move one could see coming several years ago when TBS decided to change the whole marketing campaign of the baseball broadcasts. Instead of The Braves on TBS, it became generic MLB on TBS. While they weren't fooling anyone considering all the games they aired had the Braves in them, and the Brave broadcasters were calling the game, it certaintly seemed TBS was doing something to make it seem less regional and much more of a national network.
  3. Fun trivia, Bob Prince (who was one of that well known variety) was his second in the both, his job was to throw down a waiters plate that had nuts, bolts and other stuff on it to simulate a window crashing. One other time Bing Crosby, who was the co-owner of the Bucs at the time, was in the booth talking about Ralph Kiner, Kiner than mashes a ball and just as Bing says it's out of there, Rosey steps over Bing, steals the mike and goes into his call in a very John Sterling-esque way.

  5. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I like how Steve is decrying the "Wright is gay" crowd when so far he's the only one who's ever mentioned such a thing.Heh, I'm pretty sure I meant it as I'm sure it's coming since Wright already is getting bashed for being a jerk, ahole, wanker, weenie, and God knows whatelse on Yankee forums, Phillie Forums, Braves Forums and other places where Mets are loathed the way we hate the Yankees. The Jeter is gay comments are out there on Met forums, and there is no shred of evidence (not even Piazza-esque rumors) that Derek Jeter is gay, so the more vitriolic hatred of David Wright grows to the Derek Jeter level, I can start seeing those kinds of comments, especially if Wright remains single.

BTW, the years of the stuffing for the Reds were 1956 (5 players elected, 8 overall) and 1957 (7 elected, two were tossed out but one was selected anyway) 1958 they took away the fan vote (untill 1970) and only two Reds were selected.
  7. metirish wrote: Steve, you know when Ripken met his missus?.......that's kinda gay.....Hey know, just did a little internet search on Cal, came up with an article from 1995 which said they met 11 years prior. You know, I know you're joking, but in the age of the internet, its not as creepy or strange to pull info like that. I'll tell you something that is a bit creepy. Former Post writer/ESPN radio host Tom Keegan remembers exactly what he was doing the day Jose Reyes was born, it was Keegan's wedding day! No clue if he ever told Reyes that, but he brought up that fact every now and then on his radio program.
  8. Been doing a little research for a pet project of mine, an "Ultimate All Star Game Database" sort of thing, and came up with couple of interesting trivia: 1) Who was the first reliever to be selected to an All Star Game? This is pure reliever, not a guy who started roughly half of the games he pitched that season. 2) What year did a team have the most players selected on the All Star Game? This also includes players selected but then replaced.
  9. ]The good looks, the money, the ultimate bachelor pad: Comparisons with Jeter have become inevitable. Like Jeter, Wright entered the major leagues at 21 and is a pure product of his team: drafted and groomed when he was still a teenager. Growing up, Wright idolized Cal Ripken Jr., but Jeter has become his model for playing in New York. Hes offered me some great advice, says Wright. He just says to remember who you were when you started playing and dont change. It sounds simple, but its not. You wear the uniform, youre under a microscope. He has his social life, but hes also someone kids look up to. Thats a hard balance. Im very conscious of what it means to wear the jersey, but at the same time, Im a 24-year-old who likes to do what any normal 24-year-old does. But Jeter, of course, is known for having dated a variety of high-profile womenMariah Carey, Jessica Albawhereas Wright can sound vaguely monastic on the subject of dating. I dont want to put them in the same category as drugs, but women can be a a distraction, he says. I have to remember, baseball is the reason I have my apartment, baseball is the reason Im on the cover of video gamesbaseball is what I do. Im not saying I dont ever I mean, I go on dates, but Ill just never let something like that become as important as the game. Not right now, at least. How long before the "Wright is Gay" cat calls from jealous Met/Wright haters come out? Not that there is anything wrong with that (both gay and not wanting to deal with women at this stage of his career/life) but if more crap like that gets out, (especially his GQ photo shoot) you just know some serious and probably slanderous jeers will be falling from stands all over baseball. Kind of also proves my point that Wright is becoming more of a Jeter like personae than Cal Ripken. Ripken was wholesome, and "perfect" as well, but Ripken was a family guy as well, I can't pinpoint the date, but he met his future wife around 1984 or so; and I'm pretty sure no Oriole/Ripken hater ever hurled jeers questioning Cal's sexual preference. Cal always seemed like a guy a Johnny Lunchbucket would want to hang out with at a local tavern, a guy like Jeter, or what it seems Wright is trying to be would most likely rather be seen at the 40/40 with other famous people

Booooerrrrr HEY YEAAAAAAAA!
  11. I'm a bit worried that we are a few bad Maine-Perez-Pelfrey starts away from Chan Ho Park and Aaron Sele making 15-20 starts this year. Not that the starters have short leashes, but I'm concerned about the Mets taking a "lets win now" approach and plug in veterans like Sele and Park at the first sign of ineffectiveness with the back end of the rotation. While I do agree with the notion that bullpens by nature are transient in this day and age, but what if the current crew doesn't measure up to last year's standards? I'd put last year's pen right up there with the 99-00 and 86-89 pens as the best in Met history; and while Heilman, Feliciano and Wagner are still there, and Mota and Sanchez will return (though major question marks with them both when they make their returns) it seems too much of the pen has turned over for my taste.
  12. Actually, that does look like an old shot in the UD card. Has to be mid 90's, after we ditched the tail of the S and before the Black
  13. Here is Mr. Met's card, not his Rookie Card interestingly enough In 2006 Upper Deck had a three card promotion set featuring Mr. Met, The Phillie Phanatic and the Red Sox's Wally
