Frayed Knot wrote: Mainly he was brought back as a FA to replace the traded Randy Johnson, a move many took as an improvement simply based on the "TY" principle. Johnson was ornery while in NYC and was neither as good as he had been (Duh!, he's 43) nor worth the money they were paying him (again, who told you to give contract extensions to senior citizens?). But some failed to realize that failing to live up to the hype & cash isn't the same as being bad and therefore made the mistake into thinking that Pettitte - who had about 1-1/2 good seasons in 3 years w/Houston - was an automatic upgrade even though it will likely be more along the lines of treading water. Pettitte is also younger but they're paying him as much as they were paying Johnson and are on the hook for next year as well (player option). Also it has been looked at as "fixing a mistake" and unlike trading nothing for Tom Seaver in 83, this was seen more as something that really could help the team, because Pettitte would bring something that was "missing" since he left. Since Pettitte left, the media/Yankee fan base really drove home the point that Pettitte was somehow on the Whitey Ford level of staff aces when the reality is that Pettitte is a soild #2 guy, and never really has been the ace of any staff he has been on. See Leiter, Al for an example. Another point could be made that Pettitte in The Bronx was a way to lure Clemens in as well (a conspiracy point along with Robinson Cano suddently switching from 22 to 24 over the offseason)

iramets wrote: Well, Rogers wasn't the only one discussing the job title, as if the real scandal had to do with his misrepresenting his resume. Just getting the conversation back on track, is all. To be fair my concern is more about slipshod journalism and/or copyediting on the article and a wrong assumption that a guy facing 25 years would lie about his resume to better the case. -

iramets wrote: ="Frayed Knot"]Roids + Met will always equal Dykstra in my mind Didn't Dykstra get all pumped up all as a Phillie, though? Statisticaly, he stayed pretty steady during his Met career, and only turned into a monster (literally and figuratively) when his cap turned red, right? It started after the 1986 season, he really became homer happy and showed up in ST of 1987 alot bulkier -

iramets wrote: You guys are looking at a story headed "Former Mets Employee Distributed Steroids" and you're focusing on his job title? Big picture, fellas, big picture--whose name is he gonna name? That's the question here. He may have worked in the visiting clubhouse, but he clearly knew the Met players--you gotta figure he sold steroids to some of them. The question is --WHO? HoJo? Strawberry? K-Mac? Some big Mets-heroes are shitting bricks this morning, I promise you that. Be prepared to re-think your admiration for some Mets, or alternatively to rethink your scorn for rationalizing Giants fans because you're about to start offering up some of their weaker justifications for Bonds' big head. (I never really understood how you get your skull to grow, BTW--I don't see how bone or scalp responds to exercise, but that's a whole nother story.) I think some Met fans have done that when we resigned Mota while he was under suspension! -

Fair point, though if you are telling a US Goverment Official certain information during an interrogation, isn't it better to say that you were higher up on a food chain than you actually were. Kind of makes the case a tad more explosive coming from someone who worked with a high ranking title than just a part-time employee member of the rank & file, basically working season-to-season rather than a full fledged member of the New York Mets organization. -

Excersise, Strength and Fitness Coaches For some reason this position was first seen in the 78 guide, and then not again untill Keith Cedro in 1987. I guess the only explanation would be "I came from work" or something akin to it (I was shopping before I came here) Actually I think SNY had the ejection, I saw the mope being led away by security while at a sports bar, at first (since there was no sound) I thought he and Beltran were jawing at it, Beltran had wandered over to see what was going on and so he was on camera, and the guys I was with suggested that maybe a bat had gone into the stands and the guy was being led away to claim his replacement gift. Well, at least there is video evidence of the creep.

I went on ebay looking for an inneresting photo of Jim Bethke of the 1965 Mets and found this ebay listing: JIM BETHKE DECEASED AUTOGRAPHED 3 X 5 CARD Now the autograph looks like the one on the color shot I eventually used (and of course WHY would anyone even want to forge an obscure one-year ball player from the 60's) so I don't doubt the authenticity, but checking b-r.com, and the baseballcube.com and of course UMDB and it appears Jim Bethke is among the living. Not sure how much digging Google News is going to be, probably find out the last known place he was living and search obits. I did send the seller of that card a note asking about if Bethke is deceased or if it was just a guess on the seller's part, I haven't gotten a reply back yet.

Met fan arrested while attempting to distract Brave players Friday night ] NEW YORK (AP) - A 40-year-old man arrested at Shea Stadium on Friday night is accused of trying to distract an Atlanta Braves pitcher and shortstop with a high-powered flashlight. Frank Martinez was charged with interference with a professional sporting event and second-degree reckless endangerment, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Saturday. Authorities said Martinez flashed the powerful light at the players in the bottom of the eighth inning from his seat behind home plate. He was quickly ejected from the game. "The defendant's alleged actions recklessly endangered the lives of players and spectators and caused a temporary delay to the game," Brown said. The hullabaloo began at about 10:15 p.m. as the Braves were leading the Mets 7-0. Tim Hudson was on the mound facing Mets pinch-hitter Endy Chavez when, investigators said, Martinez turned the beam on the Braves pitcher and shortstop Edgar Renteria. Renteria complained to umpire Paul Emmel, who then called time out and alerted security. The security officers removed Martinez and found a "a small, streamline flashlight" in his backpack, Brown said. Martinez was still jailed Saturday, and unavailable for comment. He was scheduled to remain behind bars until at least the evening, when he had an arraignment scheduled in Queens Criminal Court. Queens prosecutors said Martinez did not have a lawyer yet. If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. A law making it expressly illegal to interfere with a professional sporting event was passed by the city in 2003 following a disruptive incident involving fashion designer Calvin Klein. Klein stepped onto the basketball court at Madison Square Garden in March 2003 to speak with player Latrell Sprewell while a Knicks game was in progress. The Braves won Friday's game 7-3.

I hope so too, but then again the same guys cheated a bit when they finally got a Sentinel in X3. Basically a Danger Room exercise and all you saw were lights and smoke and a giant head crashing down with Wolverine trimphantly on top. Then again weren't there rumors that Johnny Storm wouldn't be on fire, but be able to shoot flames from his hands or something? -

The last Met before Jerry Koosman to don 36. Only 18 years old in his one and only Metly (and MLBly career) season, also wore 41 (started 1965 with it, Gordie Richardson was wearing it so he moved to 28 and finally 36)! Guess not much inneresting other than being that young and idealic looking in this photo and knowing that within a couple of years he'd be out of the Big Leagues and a runner up for ROY and World Series hero would be wearing the number shown in this photo. Probably Spring Training of 1966 actually.

FINE: Freed from the shackels of the Reds no facial hair policy Berenyi here shows off a fine Mountain Man beard, which compliments that really sweaty underbill of his cap. Now you want to talk great early 80's Mountain Men looks? Dwight Bernard of the Brew Crew has the look down pat. Add those GIANT frames on his glasses and you have quite an interesting look going. Also inneresting is that the insert photo of this card appears to be the same picture from a different angle! I really was hoping to get this in, this is my cousin, one of the main reasons why I'm a Mets fan (he's a HUGE Yankee fan) with Lawrence Peter Berra

Not so much interesting that it's Juan Berenguer, but the fact that his card is shared by two all-time fan favorite Mets. Two out of three "future stars" making it isn't bad!

Butch Benton in his Senior League uniform with the St Pete Pelicans. Quite an interesting concept that never did take off, but those uniforms look straight out of something you'd see on the High School and College level
