  1. Never mind.

I hit two game-winning HRs in one World Series against the Yankees, one of them an inside-the-park job with two outs in the ninth, and went on to a long and distinguished managerial career. I share with only two other people the honor of having been ejected from a game as a player and a manager in six calendar decades. I was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1966, and I died in 1975, which may account for why I feel so tired. The Old Professor, ironically one you consider overated Ira, or at least his ability to see how untalented a player may be! Casey Stengel Here is a new one Well I was a Bronx Bomber for a year, but by some quirk I ended up being one of a handfull of Yankees since 1923 never to call Yankee Stadium my home! Well, I came with much fanfare, but to be honest, I guess guys like Reggie, Winfield and ARod can comiserate with me when it comes to what I went through in NY. Ah well, while I did put up some good numbers, .270 BA, 32 HRs and 85 RBIs, it wasn't quite what folks were expecting, and Lord knows I wasn't making it easier for fans missing the fella I ended up replacing. Lord willing though he won't join me where I am now though for many, many years to come, knock on wood. After my only year in pinstripes, I was a vangabound, but still put up decent stats, but my legacy is probably something different alltogether, one that is still being played out.
  3. Bobby Mathews 297 Tom Glavine 293 7 more wins to 300 Interesting tidbit, Glavine has 2,492 Ks in his career. I doubt he'll get too close at the end of the year, but I wonder if being one of the select few with both 300 wins and 3,000 strikeouts would entice him to stick around a few more seasons.
  4. metirish wrote: I forgot that everything really is about the fucking yankees....No, I think I do remeber a lot of consternation that if MLB kept the records seperate that was being considered trying to "protect" DiMaggio's record, the same way the seperation of 154 and 162 was seen as "protecting" Ruth's record.
  5. Vic Sage wrote: does the streak include post-season games? If not, why not? as long as we're going to count a "streak" that has a 5-month hiatus, why should a post-season game not count? And Ripken's record is, by its nature, a multi-year record... a hitting streak is not. They actually did this for Orel Hersisher's continuing his streak of scoreless innings that was on-going when the 1988 season ended, and no they didn't count the fact that it ended in the 9th inning of Game 1 of the NLCS! Ironically the innings streak was snapped in the very first inning of Hershiser's first game of 1989! But MLB did declare that any additional innings would have been tacked onto Orel's streak, which 2/3rds actually were that day in 1989. Interesting questing arises from Retrosheet.org, why was Tim Belcher the opening day starter for the Dodgers in 1989 and NOT the CY Young winner Orel Hershiser? The only answer I can think of is that they wanted to do the rotation in such a way that Orel started on Opening Day in LA, but that doesn't hold because Belcher started Opening Day at Dodger Stadium! Strange.
  6. OlerudOwned wrote: ="Nymr83"]i'd count it too, but baseball has said in the past they wouldn't then said they would when Rollins was streaking to start last year. Whats the argument against?Racism, obviously.Or Anti-Yankee bias. Too many Yankee/DiMaggio haters probably wanted to ensure that Joe D be removed from the top of the hitting streak records!
  7. Mets.com is saying that the Mets tribute is to be on Friday night against the Braves
  8. Which probably proves your point about my half-assed attempt at a Met HOF as voted by members of the internet community. I went through some of my old (1999, 2000) vote totals of it when I did it back on the original MOFO and somehow Bruce Boisclair got a vote! Granted it probably was a cheeky vote ala the lone vote a guy with no hope of staying on a ballot past one year gets on the actual BBWAA HOF vote every year. I might take your suggestions and do something like that over this coming winter, just wipe the slate clean of that old project (and I think I may have found a "home" for it) and start anew.
  9. Anyone catch Tom Glavine's AB song?
  10. I heard somewhere it was Jack Lange.
  11. The Franchise begins 4/13/1967
  12. The first reliever in ASG history was a fellow named Jack Russell who made the 1934 team with the Washington Senators (Cronin was the AL skipper) Definatly a pure reliever back in that time as he pitched in 54 games and started only 9. Only 7 saves, but I guess he was a manager's decision. Johnny Murphy of the Yankees was next, another skipper's discretion though, but he actually put up decent numbers (for the time of course) which included 19 saves in 1939. Speaking of 1939, and I may need some further research on this as there are some years I need to double check, the AL manager, Joe McCarthy, had 10 guys on the ASG roster. Well 9, which was done another time in a McCarthy led year, and the Yanks did it again in 1959, although that was a 2 game ASG year so I need to do a ruling on it, if you take away Lou Gehrig. This was done because from 1937 to 1946 the manager selected all of the players on the roster! Here are your 1939 Yankee All Stars: 2B Joe Gordon (starter) 3B Red Rolfe (starter) OF Joe DiMaggio (starter) OF George Selkirk (starter) C Bill Dickey (starter) P Red Ruffing (starter) SS Frankie Crosetti P Lefty Gomez P Johnny Murphy 1B Lou Gehrig named to the team but obviously wasn't a player in the game Hank Greenberg of the Tigers and Joe Cronin and Doc Cramer rounded out the Yankee...errrrr AL starting nine!
  13. I haven't figured out if you can find out who is left on the respective team's bench and pen as you could in the classic format? Can you or is this neat function now no longer available?
  14. m4v it's a protected MPEG-4 video file. The 52 game I have is 1.96 GB, and runs a shade under three hours (no commercials, not sure yet about the post game but there is a 15 minute lead in with Mel Allen talking and Gladys Gooding (unseen, presumably in her booth in Ebbets Field) singing the National Anthem) which kicked off Gillette/NBC's broadcast. Stark, very stark contrast. I haven't tried putting onto a DVD (or any of the shows and movies that I've downloaded) but I assume that you can off of the iTunes program, then stick it into a DVD player. FWIW Apple just came out with the iTV, a box that you hook up to your TV that plays whatever you have stored on your iTunes/iPod.
  15. For 1.99 you can download some of baseball's best games via MLB.com's Baseball's Best library. No Met related stuff as of yet, there are only 6 available right now: Game 1 1988 World Series Game 4 1999 World Series (Why?) Game 5 2006 World Series (I guess I can see since it's the most recent clincher) Game 7 1952 World Series (I believe the oldest surviving intact WS game from the original broadcast) and rounding out the selection so far is Cal Ripken's breaking of Lou Gehrig's record game and Nolan Ryan's 7th No-Hitter. Just downloaded the 1952 Yankee-Dodger game and finding out just what all the fuss was about when it came to a couple of famous broadcasters, Allen & Barber. They'd better get some Met stuff on their ASAP though, especially pre-86 stuff
  16. Thing is, the first out he makes on Sunday the boos will return. Not one for conspiracy theories, but it is probable that this is one that was created by the NYC Yankee biased media, even if it was unintentional. I mean this is the same market that drove home the point about how much better Jeter was than ARod for all those years, then defended Jeter after the Esquire article and made Jeter out to be so much better because of the intangilbles and ARod was just jealous because he was playing in obscurity in Texas. (ARod in Texas was like the Mona Lisa in some guy's garage was something repeated by Michael Kay after stealing it from a Post reporter) Then he's brought to the defending AL Champs with all this hype and hoopla about how he was going to collect rings alongside Jeter. Even if the rest of the Yankees went into Operation Shut Down after Game 3 of the 04 ALCS, and even if Gary Sheffield was brought in the same offseason for the same reason, because of all the hype, and because of all the built up hatred of the guy going back, even before the Esquire article or the irrational need to say Derek is so much better than the guy (I mean Reggie Jackson never even had that going against him in 1977, clearly no one thought he wasn't a superior player than anyone on the Yankees) there was no way he wasn't going to be the ultimate scapgoat for the 2004 collapse, and consequentially every Yankee failure since. Its gotten to the point where even if he does do something that could be defined as trying to keep the Yankees in a game it looks like he's just padding his numbers, while a Jeter will get the "And that Jeter, keeping hope alive for the Yankees" comment after a 2 out hit with the Yanks down by 3 or something in the 9th. I'm actually rooting that he doesn't come back next year, and will root for him and whomever he plays for next season to win the World Series..unless it's against the Mets of course!
  17. Matsui strained his hamstring, the fans are starting "We Want Bernie" chants.
  18. Heading to Shea for my 22nd straight year Thursday night, somewhere in the Upper Deck. Going to be cold and rainy... At least we'll be covered, my uncle got a bunch of $5 tixs for the game and brings a whole bunch of his relatives
  19. ]45. Ed Kranepool (September 22, 1962) And the last, shall be first! 18 years and on the top of many Met hitting categories, well out of sheer atrition of course.
  20. The Mets are the last undefeated team in the NL, Twinkies are the only 3-0 team in the AL, their game got postponned last night in Chicago. On the flip side, only the Astros at 0-4 are looking for their first regular season win of 2007.
  21. Are other deceased Mets among the 500 afforded the same as well?
  22. 1) Those are clearly forged sigs of Ruth, Mantle, (Mantle clearly isn't the way the Mick signed it) Williams and Berra (whom the seller thought said "Yogi Bear") 2) "krawk mozzuchi" Or "Frank Mozzuchi" as it looks, well, I never even heard of! 3) 100 dollars as the opening price? Clearly this is the work of someone A) wanting to take someone for a ride or bought the ball thinking it really was signed by all 5 people and thought 100 was a real price to start (Considering Ruth died in 1948, chances are, unless you are a super fan collector like a Barry Halper, not too many Ruth-Mantle stuff exists, so we are starting a lot more than just 100)
  23. Damn G, right as I'm looking for this place to celebrate the first Triple Happiness in, you post the thread! =
