  1. And the bad luck continues!
  2. I was just responding to KC's lack of response. I still think my argument makes sense, I mean the Yankee logo itself is the among the most reconigzed sports logo in the world, so you come to this area of the country knowing hardly anything about baseball, are you going to root for some team that you may have heard vauge references to, or are you going to root for a team you have heard about?
  3. No clue why MLB calls attention to this on the main page though, generally it's through 6 when things really get serious
  4. What? Rendered speechless? No snarky remark about my generalzations on a certain segment of society being no better than what your average dumb, uninformed WABC caller would say?
  5. IIRC the NY Giants announced that Frank Gifford's number was being retired that night at some dinner function during the offseason or something a couple of years back? No fancy pre-game or half time ceromony at Giants Stadium or anything, just "Ladies and Gentlemen, Frank Gifford's uniform number is now retired. Thank you, don't forget to tip your waiters and please, try the veal." Actually, wasn't Casey Stengel's number retirement by the Mets handled the same way as well? Not during a game, just a Press Conference and Stengel talking in front of an empty Shea Stadium? The Reds could try that approach.
  6. Of course, while I've seen data somewhere that said Yankee fans are more affluent (probably based on everything North (Westchester/Rockland County, South (New Jersey) and East (CT) of the City being considered Yankee country) than Met fans (despite Long Island being a major hub for Met fans) the fact that the Yankees (along with the Dodgers, Lakers, Bulls, Cowboys, Raiders, ect) are considered one of the most universally known American sport franchises they'll attract the causal immigrant (I'm not suggesting that all immigrants are poor, or anything, but I'm basing it on immigrants who come looking for a better life and starting from pretty much scratch) based on a quick decision based on who they know rather than actually thinking about who they should root for. It makes sense, no matter how hard the Mets have seemed to try over the years (it's sad that a lot of people only think the Mets targeted the Latino audience once Omar became the GM), but that population generally gravitiates towards the Yankees because they've heard the Yankee name in their country.
  7. Yance, can you post the current UMDB Most Wanted list out of both Mets and non-playing personell that you are missing?
  8. Ramon Castro sporting a blue helmet
  9. Not the best, but here is Easley
  10. A Blue Julio Franco
  11. A Blue Alou
  12. Now we are cooking, Mr. Schoeneweis, wear that blue cap proud!
  13. Yeah the eyes are shadowed here, but that is Getty's issue. Ditto with the black cap on Mr. Smith
  14. Ruben Gotay
  15. Dupe image
  16. Actually Mike Birkbeck should have been before the late Mike Bishop...
  17. Doesn't seem like there are going to be any much better than this for Chan Ho Park Yeah it's black cap and from the side, but figuring this is a "one and done" start. Like Jose Lima last year, I am efforting to make sure Chan Ho Park fails to overtake Bob Gibson on the UMDB's Most Wanted List.

  19. Funny thing about ABC's coverage, I have the 1975 set and there are no current players in NBC's booth and the broadcasters are established baseball guys, while ABC (and I believe this was the era for Monday Night Baseball right?) had their two biggest football guys in there in Jackson and Cosell along with a novice current ballplayer. I also have the 1979 set that has the ABC broadcast and at least they had then Angel broadcaster Don Drysdale as the third wheel in the booth with Cosell and Jackson. And of course by 1986 Tim McCarver and Jim Palmer was added to the mix that featured Jackson and Al Michaels (who at least was a Red announcer in the early 70's) Roone Arledge knew how to put together a great football team, seemed like he was being gimmicky though with his baseball selections.
  20. HA! Cosell says that Reggie was injured when his team faced Seaver's team (I assume meaning Tom's then current squad in 1972) and Seaver corrected him, Cosell didn't have any kind of comeback to that one though.
  21. Because I like collecting stuff like this I bought the 1977 World Series set, which features Tom Seaver broadcasting with Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell for ABC. Good to listen to, course via your favorite rental choices! Just started to watch Game 1, so far no sign of the pomposity that Seaver had as a Yankee and Met broadcaster.
  22. The Nikonian is wise in all things!
  23. Little off track for this Who Am I: I may be a fictional character, but as baseball fans go, there are few bigger than I am in the century that I am in. Heck, in the piolt episode I even tried to explain linear existence to some non-corporal ailens by using baseball! In another episode I rubbed elbows with a character that resembled Willie Mays! Heck I've even suggested watching Game 7 of the 1964 WS as a date! And in another episode, aired in Jan of 1995, I suggested the 1999 Yanks were one of the greatest teams of all time. I guess the writers were a year off!
  24. The sad thing is, that describes every GM/high ranking front office official over the last 20 years. I mean like people weren't suspect of the late 80's-early 90's A's? Didn't the Padre GM know about Caminiti in 98-ish but didn't bother to tell anyone untill all the stories were breaking in the last few years? And people wonder why there are those who think baseball is a dying sport!
