  2. Funny story from the Bad Guys Won book. Tim Teufel is one of those guys who will add a Biblical reference to his sig, well at a card show he signs for a guy and the guy moves along to IIRC Ed Hearn, and the guy sees the inscription and says something to the effect of "That so-and-so is hitting on my WIFE! He's telling her what room number he's in!" To which Hearn sees the item and explains that its a book in the Bible, Romans, or Rom as it can be abbreviated as.
  3. MFS62 wrote: ="SteveJRogers"] Not so much interesting that it's Juan Berenguer, but the fact that his card is shared by two all-time fan favorite Mets. Two out of three "future stars" making it isn't bad! Actually, Berenguer went on to have a 15 year major league career: http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/berenju01.shtml Maybe not a star but not a total bust either. Later That was meant as "Future Met Stars" not future MLB stars as the card was meant as a Met card, not an MLB card.
  4. 294 The Big Six as Glavine needs 6 more
  5. Are you in the New York area? I doubt they publish nation wide as Scout handles many, many different team specific magazines. In the area though, Barnes & Nobles carries it. I think Borders does as well but I'm not 100 % I'd suspect most expanded magazine places, like Hudson News, that stock more than just the big names/publishers.

It's a reference to a Nike ad that Glavine and Greg Maddux did late in the 1998 season that featured Heather Locklear and Mark McGwire. Essentially Mark was getting all the attention so Glavine and Maddux decided to do some "extra training." The punch line though was that despite their new BP power (which gave way to the catch phrase) Heather was still interested in Mark McGwire!

  9. 755 744 11 more to go. In other HR ATL news Sammy Sosa, who went ahead of Frank Robinson for 5th All-Time, is 5 away from HR # 600. Ken Griffey Jr also just recently became the 10th All Time HR hitter. Frank Thomas, (491) Alex Rodriguez, (478) Jim Thome, (477) and Manny Ramirez (475) are within striking distance of hitting their 500th homer this season.
  10. Right. Geez, my journalistic skills are taking a hit today (had a humbling experience earlier at work)
  11. NY Mets fan whose back was broken at ballpark files lawsuit ]NEW YORK -- The New York Mets fan whose back was broken by an apparently drunken 300-pound man who fell on her at Shea Stadium during the team's home opener has filed a lawsuit because of her injuries. Ellen Massey, 58, says in court papers that on April 9 she was in the second row of the right field upper deck near a "visibly intoxicated" man who was "acting in a rowdy, boisterous and dangerous manner for a long period of time." Around 3:30 p.m., court papers say, the man, who has not been found or identified, "in an intoxicated condition fell upon plaintiff causing her to sustain severe personal injuries." Massey's lawyer, Stephen Kaufman, said Monday that the fall by the drunk, who was described as a blond 300-pounder, cracked several of the woman's vertebrae. "He got up and left," apparently uninjured, Kaufman said. "We have information that one of the security people might have spoken to him and let him leave." Two emergency medical technicians sitting directly in front of Massey gave her first aid and comforted her until an ambulance arrived, Kaufman said. Massey underwent surgery for spinal injuries at Jacobi Medical Center and was hospitalized there for about two weeks, Kaufman said. Doctors put rods and screws in her back and will have to operate on her again, he said. Massey was at the game with two adult nephews when the incident occurred between the sixth and seventh innings, with the Mets behind 5-3. The home team went on the beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-5. Massey, a Manhattan lawyer, named Sterling Mets L.P., owner of the baseball team; Philadelphia-based Aramark Corp., the beer vendor; the Service Employees International Union Local 177, whose members are security guards at Shea Stadium, and "John Doe," the unidentified man who fell on her, as defendants. Massey's court papers say that Sterling Mets had a duty to provide reasonable safety for stadium patrons, that Aramark should not have sold alcohol to spectators who appeared to be already drunk and that the union employees should have prevented unruly behavior. The lawsuit, filed Friday in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, seeks unspecified money damages for Massey's injuries. The Mets issued a statement about the lawsuit saying, "We believe the claim has no merit." Aramark said it was reviewing the complaint. "We continue to work closely with the Mets and stadium security personnel in investigating this incident," spokeswoman Kristine Grow said. There was no answer at Local 177's headquarters in Brooklyn. In August 2006, a New Jersey appeals court reversed a $105 million verdict against Aramark for selling beer to a drunken man who paralyzed a girl in an auto wreck after a 1999 football game at Giants Stadium. The court ordered a new trial. The three-judge appeals panel said the trial court improperly allowed testimony about the "drinking environment" at the game. The man who caused the accident, Daniel Lanzaro, 34 at the time, is serving a five-year prison term after pleading guilty to vehicular assault. He settled with the family for $200,000 in insurance money to pay his portion of the damages. Lanzaro, who had a blood-alcohol level of 0.226, nearly three times the 0.08 legal limit, testified he bought six beers at halftime although he had already drunk at least six during the first half and was slurring his speech. Not sure why the info on the New Jersey tragedy needs to be mentioned though.
  12. BTW, inneresting thing, Warren Sphan's last year on the Braves was Phil Niekro's first and thanks to the 1987 Braves wanting to give Knuksie "One Last Go Round" the last day of the regular season, Phil Niekro ended up being a teammate of Tom Glavine in Glavine's debut season! BTW, in 1988 Score in their set had a card of Niekro from that game Which means one of the following Brave hurlers who made their MLB debuts in 2002 will one day win 300 games! = Kevin Gryboski Trey Hodges (although he has since been released by the Twins and twice by the Braves, and hasn't pitched in the bigs since 03) Jung Bong (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Reds) John Foster (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 05) John Ennis (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Tigers) Andy Pratt (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Cubs) Joey Dawley (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Indians) Seriously, what is with all those Baby Braves that haven't pitched since 2004? Heh, maybe Mazzone really is overrated as a developmental pitching coach as oppossed to a push-button one (ANYONE could be a PC to Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux.)
  13. Yancy Street Gang wrote: This movie wasn't made with a Spider-Man 4 in mind. There may yet be one, but this movie doesn't set us up in any way for what might come next. Which is the reason why Sony pretty much "forced" Sam Rami to use Venom in this film. Rami wanted to concentrate on the more classic villians that were created during Stan Lee's run with the character, but Sony essentially made Rami use probably the most popular villian in Spidey's Rouges Gallery.
  14. BTW, another interesting tidbit I dug out is that the 10 seasons as Brave teammates from 93-02 for Glavine and Maddux will break a record for most years as teammates for a pair of future or current 300 Game Winners (there have never been more than two future or current 300 Game Winners on the same team in a given year) the current record is 5: New York Giants Tim Keefe/Mickey Welch 1885-1889 and Next pair, clocking in at 4 years New York Mets Tom Seaver/Nolan Ryan 1968-1971 Another interesting tidbit is that in 1986 Tom Seaver missed out on being a teammate of 2 300 Game Winners in the same season. He was traded in June to the Red Sox, becoming a teammate of Roger Clemens, and in August of that year the White Sox picked up Steve Carlton! Carlton wound up making history a year later, joining Phil Niekro on the Indians, making it the first time a club would feature two current 300 Game Winners at the same time during the same season. Seaver, Niekro and John Clarkson share the title of being on the same team as another future or current 300 Game Winner in the same year, all three doing it three times: John Clarkson Charles Radbourne Braves 1888-1889 Kid Nichols Braves 1890-1892 Cy Young Spiders 1892-1894 Tom Seaver Nolan Ryan Mets 1968-1971 Steve Carlton White Sox 1986 Roger Clemens Red Sox 1988 Phil Niekro Warren Spahn Braves 1964 Gaylord Perry Braves 1980 Steve Carlton Indians 1987 Also another note about Keefe and Welch, the two also were teammates on the 1880-1882 Troy team of the NL. They are the only combo to be on more than one franchise.
  15. Game 5 1969 World Series is now available.
  16. Edgy DC wrote: The Hall of Fame says it's always enjoyed the right to choose the insignia on the player's cap. Really? Catfish Hunter has no insignia on his plaque, and it was stated that it was his choice so he wouldn't slight either the A's (whom he'd probably would have been choosen as with 10 seasons, 3 rings, 4 20 game seasons and his only CY Young Award) or the Yankees (he was very much a part of the Yankee family the last couple of decades of his life despite only 5 seasons with only two "decent" seasons and one great one).
  17. Well, Clemens resumes his "active leader" role today! Glavine still siting on 293 Inneresting trivia, Glavine would join Spahn, Seaver and Ryan as the only guys with games played as a Met. Pretty nifty foursome Which team has had the most 300 game winners suit up for them?
  18. Bumping this up before Squiddy comes in this week, here is an article combining the report of Josh Hancock's death and photos from the memorial service [urlhttp://www.thenewstribune.com/893/story/54187.html][/url]
  19. Right, forgot about the "Dave Winfield Rule" (yes Boggs was in on it as well, but it was the rumors of something being fishy with Winfeld choosing the Padres for his plaque that took away the players right to choose the cap) BTW, from the sounds of things, looks like its a 20 mil contract with none of the perks the Astros gave him (would be hard to do anyway since he lives in Texas and not New York and all)
  20. Its now official, Interlocking NY on the Cooperstown plaque, and NO #21 retirement ceromony in Beantown. Hearing and reading fan reaction to Clemens on the radio and internet though has me wondering if he actually will be treated like a "conquering hero" when he pitches again at Yankee Stadium. It seemed to me that the whole "Clemens should be a Yankee again" movement was a media-only movement Also gotta wonder if this was a Boss move or a Cashman move. BTW, Pavano heading for Tommy John surgery, so much for that. ]I had the Braves on but it was the LA guys and they said he made the announcement from Steinie's box? They weren't specific, maybe they were joking and it went over my head. What kind of announcement? They pulled a page out of Big Stein's 1978 playbook. He was snuck into the Stadium, and they announced it to the Stadium crowd during the 7th inning.
  21. One of my Dad's friends had his son (elementary school age) in a baseball instruction thing where the guy claimed to be a former Met and the father kept asking me if I heard of the guy, for some reason he never quite got the actual name; He thought it was some son of a famous ballplayer and for some reason either Roberto Clemente Jr or Eduardo Perez kept going in his mind. Well they never did find out exactly what the story was, (i.e what EXACTLY was his name so I could have said "Ahh, Norfolk Tides 1995-1996" or something) and for that the kid thinks the guy was a flat out lier rather than a guy just trying to buff up his resume to get more customers for his instructional camp thing.
  22. Okay, that is clearly Jerry Koosman on this fine Topps 1974 card spotlighting the 1973 NLCS. The site where this is being sold on, Beckett.com (well the person selling the card anyway) lists it as 1974 Topps #471 Jon Matlack NLCS Eh, see this every so often, but it's just funny seeing the wrong player credited on a lot. My guess is the seller is getting his images confused, because this is Jon's 1974 Topps card: BTW, I wonder why Rose v. Harrelson wasn't spotlighted.
  23. Also apparantly the hire was actually part of a marketing tie-in that the Yankees were getting into with the guy's firm, so in essence it was the Yankees getting into bed with probably some BALCO wannabe or something!
  24. Yeah he is the Skip, but news like this seems like a Rico post Willie Randolph to give the Commencement Address at Fordham on the 19th ]The University will also award an honorary doctorate of humane letters degree to Randolph. Randolph's daughter, Ciara, a Fordham College at Rose Hill student, will be among the graduating seniors... Details about commencement are available on the Fordham website. The main ceremony will be broadcast on WFUV-FM 90.7, and streamed live on the Internet at www.fordham.edu/media .
  25. Edgy DC wrote: ="SteveJRogers"]No clue why MLB calls attention to this on the main page though, generally it's through 6 when things really get serious None? Well, okay, I'll give you that point, but thats about all I'll give you. I mean its not as bad as acting as if there is a no-no chance after 2 or 3 innings, but it still seems on the early side.
