  1. ="metirish"] MAINE: Man Tom, I remeber seeing you in the 1991 World Series, and then talking about it to my 3rd grade classmates! GLAVINE: Shut up John!
  2. Edgy DC wrote: and a recent Yankee pedigree. Does 34 games, and no postseason apperances (see Leedee, Ricky) count as a MFY pedigree? IIRC Yankee Nation couldn't wait for him to get DFAed last season
  3. I prefer to remember the time he and Todd Hundley were splitting the catching chores. Speaking of which, for the life of me I don't even know why this was the case? Okay in 1995 Hundley did miss a month and change, but Stinnett still seemed to play in more than his share as a backup backstop in 1994 Or maybe it's my fuzzy math and 82 to 44 would have translated to a usual starter to backup ratio if the year was finished
  4. Because, I don't have that much free time or procrastination time to do so =;P
  5. BTW, when I mean one poster, I do mean a thread starter. Clearly no one should be obligated to add on if they don't have anything or are not available to post for a return series a week later or the second time around for Central and West Division teams
  6. Another tradition from past years is the posting of celebratory images once the Mets win, Yankees lose and Braves lose in the same day. With the Braves fall from their division winning perch a year ago, and the Phillies finishing in second in the division mean that the Phillies are the third wheel in the Troika? Or will the Braves have a bounce back year meaning their continued troubles should be recorded? Or has coming this close to winning the NL Championship against a former NL East rival mean the Cardinals get added? Or should we do like the song says, lets call the whole thing off.
  7. Last season it seemed KTEs saw some slacking off, especially at the end of the season, so how should this fine CPF tradition be continued this coming season?
  8. Great article G, but this is the former MLBers thread: This is the Continuing Careers Of Ex-Mets thread
  9. cooby wrote: ="SteveJRogers"]I'd be interested in converting it to DVD for you, well after I make my own copy. Why the lag time? ??? I'd probably be throwing the next DVD right in after I finish making the first one.
  10. Someone please beat me to posting a pic of Derek Bell on the mound, with shades. Or at least find something more inneresting than an outfielder on the mound while wearing sunglasses. = BTW, hard to believe we actually got this far without the King of Met photos around here, Zvon chiming in with a photo! Or at least something from his card set. I hope he's having a good winter season
  11. I was going to not post in this thread for another week or so, but just for that Edgy: Nice image of Rich Becker from a rather unique set that Pinnacle came up with. Cards that were in the format of a standard photograph. I mean you can't even tell it's a baseball card just by looking at the image! Blank backs too, you pretty much have to know who the player in the photos are, they did provide checklists but the cards themselves were highly undescriptive. No wonder it only lasted one time!
  12. ="Yancy Street Gang"]Ladies and gentlemen, your 1977 Jackson Mets! We play baseball with a fever hotter than pepper sprouts We've been playing in Jackson Ever since the Mets sent us down we're playing in Jackson look out Jackson town...

Frayed Knot wrote: I've come to the conclusion that - aside from the handful of big conf/big team games that get onto the networks and then the tourney stuff - college basketball has become the sports channel equivelent of infomercials; they're cheap as hell to buy and so the stations can just run 'em out there as time fillers. Plus you are pretty much guaranteed an audience, even for women's games you'll get fans, alumni and students to tune in (assuming of course that this is a local NYC area confrerence game and not say a Pacific Coast Conference game!) I mean you aren't going to get the same ratings that even a Mets-Brewers game will get on a Wednesday night in June, but it will bring more eyeballs to the sets than brokering time for info-mercials or airing niche sport games.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: It's just like when someone pointed out that only SNY-property games were being used for the end-of-year high-light shows; this is still a budget-conscious start-up operation. I have yet to watch any of the classic postseason games, so quick question, do they have the original TV broadcasts as the audio? Over at YES they actually use the WABC (or WCBS depending on the series) broadcast rather than whomever ESPN or FOX was using that night. They also do this to various regular season games that aired on national feeds Actually thats a neat idea, most local viewers can't stand the national guys (especially Buck 'n McCarver) and would probably enjoy hearing a broadcast they never heard because they were watching the game rather than listening.
  15. I'd be interested in converting it to DVD for you, well after I make my own copy.
  16. KC wrote: Tuned to SNY in hopes of something good ... woman's basketball. Yuck. I know we didn't want SNY to be YESlike and be a 24/7 commercial for the Mets, but jeezlouise it's mid-February, give us some freakin' old games. Guess they are sticking to the "We are a Sports Channel with a New York slant" line that they were trying to push (also the reason for the "Yankee Highlights" ad) when they announced the name last year
  17. ="KC"] forty-four years worth of treasures. While working and reading, I watched the 65, 67, 68, 69 team promo film and An Amazin' Era. Hey Kase, that the original An Amazin' Era with the Thirdbasemen song in and stops properly after the 1985 season or is that the one that was updated around 1988 that had info on both the 1986 and 1987 season? Been trying to get a copy to convert into a DVD, but that latter version is the one I have, and the one that is in the collection of the Westchester Library System
  18. Nymr83 wrote: i'd love to see those time rules enforced, the length of the game is a big "turnoff" in my opinion to many casual fans, i think its gotten somewhat better the last 3 or 4 years but theres still a long way to go Course the irony there is how much lots of offense is a big turn-on to many causal fans, and the increase of game times are really more a product of offense related issues than the length of time inbetween pitches. Issues would be prolonged innings going 6-8 batter deep because pitchers struggle to get outs against big offensive lineups, rise of specialization of the reliever of course has multiple pitching changes, say nothing of multiple trips to the mound in the same frame. Not to mention the issues arising from expansion which means you are now dealing with many pitchers who even 20 years ago would still be in AAA, or at the very least would not be called up untill the organization was sure he was ready to face big league hitting. Mike Hargrove was the original "Human Rain Delay" and this was in the 70's! I'm sure he wasn't alone, and I'm sure there were pitchers ala Traschel back when games would go much more rapidly. And yes, TV is part of the problem as well. I mean if there is a problem with TV broadcasts "missing" pitches or just coming back as a play is occuring, thats probably because the umpire crew chief just had enough of waiting for TV to get back from it's commercials!
  19. Speaking of Met ballparks, for someone who pretty much only knows Shea over the last 20 some years, kind of strange seeing nothing but barren sky over the left-center field wall. I swear, my first thoughts, unless the shot includes the window infront of the bullpen or part of the the Left Field stands, is that it's a Spring Training shot! Pretty decent sideburns there on Beauchamp as well.
  20. Love cards showing players not playing baseball. Wonder who Blaine is conversing with here. Kiner? Healy?
  21. Great example here of baseball card companies usage of older photos for newer cards. This is Larry Bearnarth's 1965 Topps card, yet the photo is from 1963 in the Polo Grounds. BTW, that was from FindAGrave.com, they also have a huge image of the enterance to the Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL, Bearnarth's final resting place.
  22. iramets wrote: ="Edgy DC"] ludmouth The kid always has the solace of those 26 World's Championships. The fact that he's never witnessed one, nor smelled one, nor celebrated one is immaterial. He basks in their glow. He's a certified winner. Same kid, is a Celtic fan, or a Canadien fan, Celtics haven't won in 20 years and the Habs haven't won in over 10. Does that kid take solace in all their championships and glory days even though he was born after it all happened? Are Icelander...errr Islander fans not considered "long suffering" because for a short period they had a run that is among the greatest runs in NHL history? There was actually a time where the Red Sox had the most championships in baseball history, I doubt Red Sox fans ever sat back and basksed in their glow. Yes it was several generations ago but still
  23. Leo Mazzone is going to make the O's staff into a mini-Braves. This and the Benson injury do not hurt this trajectory. The O's had a pretty darn good ERA the second half as a staff and I would not be surprised if they are breathing down the Big Two's necks come the All Star Break. Wheither they can hang through August and September though...
  24. Its also begging for a Billy Martin-esque protest with a pitcher and infielder roaming the outfield just to finish off the final 5 and a half innings of a game.
  25. Doesn't seem that big of a deal From the SF Gate: ]In his first workout with the Giants, Barry Zito (left) came out with a new pitching motion. In an attempt to get better movement on his pitches and take stress off his arm, he is less upright than he was with the A's (above). Zito said he felt 'constricted' recently in Oakland, not using his body to generate power. Pitching coach Dave Righetti, watching Zito left, had been warned that a change was coming, but was surprised the difference was so pronounced. But would have made some nice material for the sports writer and broadcaster threads with Chicken Littles and Met-bashers ripping everyone for it.
