  1. If a complete game shutout doesn't get a "6" (and it hasn't, from a few voters), then what does? Or perhaps is it thought that a "6" is unachievable? I realize Delgado and Valentin might warrant some love, but when the other team scores 0 runs, the pitching clearly was most important in the winning of the game.
  2. [sorry for the spam] My plan tickets (2 seats) are Mezz Reserved, Section 12, Row E (3rd base). I can't use the Friday August 4 tickets. Checking here first before selling them if anyone can use them. Face is $29/ticket. Happy to sell them at a CPF discount of $40 for the pair. PM or email g_radecki@yahoo.com
  3. Maine 6 Valentin 3 Delgado 1
  4. Merengue Night at Shea! It's always fun at Merengue Night. Real party atmosphere. I think they had close to a sell-out -- the Loge and Mezzanine were full, the upper deck filled in pretty well, lots of people arriving near the actual start of the game. Jose Reyes was clearly the fan favorite tonight but they warmed up to Valentin pretty quickly too. Heath Bell threw in the 'pen in the 9th but there wasn't really any doubt that Maine would finish it. Only downside about Maine: he looks completely lost at the plate. Like, even worse than Pedro. When Maine started strong -- ie. the 6 pitches in the first, etc. -- it was starting to get electric at Shea. You could just sense something (ie. the Valentin slam) coming...(I thought it was going to be Cliff with the Kaboom). Great game, probably the most fun I've had at Shea all year.
  5. Heilman 2 Reyes 2 Wright 2
  6. Checking the scores online, I see it's 4-4 in the Toronto-NYY game in the 10th so I turn it on...only to see Vernon Wells hit the walkoff against Rivera. Great moment, certainly, but somehow it's the only homer he's allowed all season. Damn.
  7. It's been a long while since we've gone to bonus baseball -- 39 games, in fact. That's at least the 3-year high for number of games between extra inning games.
  8. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I wouldn't want to part with Sanchez, but Heilman should be very available if anyone's interested. Certainly not for Freddy Garcia. Perhaps in the right deal. His outings in the last 2 games are encouraging.

  10. I don't think you can call "worst trade of the decade" until 10 years after the trade have elapsed. Hell, I think there should be a 5 year waiting period before any "worst ever"-type labels are applied.

  13. Maine starts on Saturday. The off days could allow them to push Pedro all the way back to the first weekend in August against Philly if they wanted. More likely, he starts 7/29 vs. Atlanta.
  14. Beltran 4.5 Pelfrey 3 Valentin 1 Nady 1 LoDuca .5
  15. Nice call by Chris Cotter!
  16. Elster88 wrote: When does he get out. It was a probation violation, so it was a 1 year sentence, dating from April. I think he can get out after 7 months, so November at the earliest.
  17. Elster88 wrote: The Reds keep the team banners in the same order as the standings. Nice. I never knew that either, I thought Wrigley was the only place.
  18. Nice awkard moment when Keith notes that the '86 reunion at Shea is coming up in about a month. K: "Everybody's going to be there, except those coaching in the major leagues right now...Roger McDowell, he can't make it, he's the pitching coach for Atlanta....and Lee Mazilli, with the Yankees. K and G: [long awkward pause, as there's clearly another reason why someone else won't be there]
  19. If he's throwing a simulated game first, sure looks like John Maine will start Saturday.
  20. ="Centerfield"]Mets are getting Jarrod Washburn for Brian Bannister and Victor Diaz. That's one that I'd actually like to see...
  21. Oct 4, 1999 Mets vs. Reds One-game Wild Card Playoff...on now.
  22. Edgy DC wrote: If he does hit well enough to warrant post-season roster consideration (still an if), I don't see a lot of teams needing 12 pitchers on a post-season roster. That said, we probably could have used us some Rigo Beltran in the 1999 playoffs. Possibly, although we did have 11 pitchers on that roster. In 2000, the Mets only carried 10 pitchers on the postseason roster.
  23. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Fonzie could replace Jose Valentin, Julio Franco, or Chris Woodward. The only problem is that each of the three is doing a better job than Alfonzo probably would. So unless one of them is injured or traded, there's probably no room on the postseason roster for Fonzie. (But we might see him after September 1.) That's hardly the only problem. Franco's contract; Woodward being the only backup SS; Valentin has a starting job in which he's doing admirably. I suppose it's worth waiting to see what happens in the minors but Jeff Keppinger seems to be much more deserving of the next middle infield promotion than Edgardo Alfonzo.
  24. Edgy DC wrote: That said, the Mets have been uncharacteristically carrying only three middle infielders since the Matsui trade, and have been without a substitute there since the Reye's injury, so they may indeed be looking at him to potentially back up second and third, pinch-hit, and maybe help Valentin with a lefty now and then. I guess this is where we again lament Julio Franco's lack of defensive utility, for he is seemingly redundant with Woodward, Marrero, Nady, Valentin (and LoDuca) all able to play first. There are really only two spots for Alfonzo to take on the roster -- Eli Marrero's or Heath Bell's. If Willie is really going to use Marrero's versatility (the stints at 3B and C in the blowouts were encouraging) I can't see Fonzie warranting a spot on the roster.
