  1. If the wins can be attributed to run support, then the depth a starting pitcher goes into a game isn't really as important. How deep a starting pitcher goes into a game also is only important relative to the quality and depth of the bullpen. As for going deep into October, perhaps the answer lies not in personel but in how they're used? I think a 6-man rotation -- Pedro, Glavine, Trachsel, El Duque, and pick 2 of Soler, Maine, Pelfrey, Bannister, whomever -- could be what's needed to keep arms fresh for October.
  2. I know this is an inexact science, but I found these statistics to be particularly interesting. I think the numbers are encouraging. Clearly they won't win that many Glavine starts for the rest of the year, but they should be winning more Pedro starts too. Perhaps the need for another starter isn't quite as great as it's percieved to be? 3. Going into the All-Star Break: Thu: Trachsel Fri: Sat: John Maine Sat: Sun: Glavine Forecast: Pedro will pitch Friday, if able. Otherwise, he'll go on the DL, retroactive to his last appearance (June 28 vs. Boston) and will be reactivated to start July 14, the first game after the All-Star break. If Pedro goes on the DL: Jose Lima will start Friday. The other start on Saturday will fall to Darren Oliver, probably with Anderson Garcia being called up to cover the 'pen -- or Mike Pelfrey will be called up and will start. If Pedro does pitch: Lima time probably shifts back to Saturday. My Prediction: Pedro to the DL, no Pelfrey.

  6. Free tickets for the bleachers night at Shea. Yes, KC, the Shea lineups are among the slowest in the league. They hadn't even posted them at Shea until 6:15, which was very late.
  7. Bump with some updates: Starters Tom Glavine - Sweet Child O'Mine, Guns N Roses Steve Trachsel - Duck and Run, 3 Doors Down Relievers Chad Bradford - Yellow Submarine, The Beatles Aaron Heilman - London Calling, The Clash Billy Wagner - Enter Sandman, Metallica C Paul LoDuca - Stayin' Alive, Bee Gees; Boogie Shoes, KC & The Sunshine Band; Shining Star, Earth, Wind & Fire IF Carlos Delgado - Rompe, Daddy Yankee David Wright - several, including Brass Monkey, The Beastie Boys OF Cliff Floyd - Everyday I'm Hustlin' - Rick Ross; Theme from Sanford and Son Xavier Nady - X, Xzibit; We Ridin', Cash Money Millionaires; Theme from Cradle 2 the Grave, DMX Bench Ramon Castro - Imperial March, Star Wars Soundtrack Julio Franco - People Get Ready, Crystal Lewis Chris Woodward - Sultans of Swing, Dire Straits; Money for Nothing, Dire Straits
  8. He was on there as "Jeff Wetteland" (9th overall, with 330). Correct spelling is John Wetteland.
  9. Seems strange to have two triple happinesses with the Mets losing so much lately, but hey, happiness is happiness.
  10. Nymr83 wrote: if Sanchez or Heilman made comments like that i'd applaud them for their honesty in calling out Willie on bad managing, but Feliciano? hry guess what buddy? you're the least important man on this roster! bullshit spots like that are what you are here for! He's hardly the least important. Check his numbers. They're quite good, even after last night's meltdown.

  12. Report from Shea: Rick Peterson, actually wearing a jersey and no jacket. Seriously. Fairly uneventful game, Glavine giving up hits left and right really wasn't much fun. glad Xaiver could get some redemption for himself.
  13. Bell was optioned down. Adams was the DFA. Lima might be a relief option. Maine will get another start before the break. It all depends on how Pedro feels.
  14. Bump: Floyd back; Milledge to AAA Maine back; Soler to AAA

  16. Alright, nice KTE, ready for the sweep. Only ex-Pirate on the Mets is Duaner Sanchez. In addition to Bay, the Pirates employ Jeromy Burnitz and Roberto Hernandez.
  17. By pulling Reyes, Willie was pretty much suggesting that the hitters weren't going to put us back in the game. I can see the argument for giving the relievers some work but my perception was that the 'pen was better served by letting Oliver take 3 innings or so rather than using Bradford (and Feliciano).
  18. I think that's a fair point, and no, we obviously don't want him pandering to the fans. Still, the failure to give Soler and Bell the hook was really frustrating, regardless of the circumstance. 11 game lead or whatever, I think the team needs to play to win every game. That always seems to be Willie's strength -- that he gets the players to play hard. I'd like to see him manage that way, too. I realize my belief about the failure to use Oliver is in part based on Ed Coleman telling me on WFAN that Maine is available to be called up to start. I really am not all that worried about the blowout per se. They happen occasionally. I just think some embarassment could've been prevented.
  19. SteveJRogers wrote: You're joking right? 11 game lead. Yeah its against a team over .500 and all, but still, ITS AN AMERICAN LEAGUE TEAM! This isn't the Phillies, Nationals, Marlins, or Braves. Or even Cards, Reds, Dodgers or anyone we'd be fighting for a WC spot with. By the way, that does jive with what Joe Torre actually thinks about these series as well, hell maybe I am listening to the radio too much and reading the columnists too much, but the bottom line is simple THIS SERIES MEANS SQUAT IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS! Everybody knows this series means "more" to each team's fans. This is especially true, in my experience and opinion, to those living closest to New York. In the standings, it's just as much as any other, as you've indicated. Considering the circumstances -- we've lost 6 of our last 8 -- that's it's one of the best 5 teams in baseball -- and the Subway Series factor -- it should be managed like an important, rather than a meaningless game.
  20. Eli Marerro has never played third base in a major league game, before tonight.
  21. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Interesting though as Joe & Jon were saying -- Torre managed this like a game he had to have and WWSB didn't. Of course Joe had to have it and WWSB didn;t, necessarily. That's what makes me so damn furious. Maybe he "didn't" have to have it but that shows, in my opinion, a serious disrespect for Mets fans (ie. not recognizing the importance of this particular series).
  22. Bannister should also be back...eventually.
  23. Johnny Dickshot wrote: OTOH, Game 1 of the 2000 WS, 6th inning, would still be going on now and preventing this game from even happening if Timo F. Perez ran the bases properly at MFY Stadium. They were showing that on YES today. Except that they took the FOX video and dubbed over Kay and Sterling (presumably from the radio broadcast of the game). YES Network, proving themselves to be a bunch of tools.
  24. Johnny Dickshot wrote: It's Maine's turn in the Norfolk rotation tomorrow too. That's why I'm so damn puzzled by the "insistance"** that Oliver start. ** Judging from failure to have him pitch tonight.
  25. I just don't get it. We pull Reyes, but put in a key reliever (Bradford)?? They must REALLY want Darren Oliver to take that start tomorrow. What the hell was wrong with John Maine?
