  7. Man, the Padres are terrible. Nice effort by the Mets regardless. I'm beginning to think that I could live with Duda in right next year.
  8. Not printed on that menu: it's another $10/person if you want a table with a view of the field
  9. The not-quite-as-bad-guys prevail, 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th and retain first place. Season ends today, they will get Detroit rather than Texas/Los Angeles in the first round.
  10. It comes as no surprise but Murphy is done for the year. The only good news is that no surgery is required.
  11. Defensive re-set: Turner back to second Evans to third Duda to first Hairston back to right David Wright to shortstop.
  12. Dickey 2 Wright 1 Murphy 1
  13. You don't walk Uggla (who is a righty) to get to Heyward (a lefty) with the bases loaded. --- I was profoundly upset with how the 8th inning was handled by the Mets. It was abundantly clear that Hairston should have hit for Pagan when there were two on and one out, a lefty on the mound and nobody up in the Braves bullpen. It was managerial malpractice for Collins to let Pagan hit rather than using Hairston there. THAT is the time when you use your best pinch hitter. Waiting until you are down three, with two outs in the bottom of the 9th and nobody on is stupid. bmfc already made my other point: Pagan and Bay both swinging at the first pitch -- after Venters CLEARLY showed he was wild -- was idiotic. I would bench both of them for tomorrow's game.
  14. California Penal Code Section 330 330. Every person who deals, plays, or carries on, opens, or causes to be opened, or who conducts, either as owner or employee, whether for hire or not, any game of faro, monte, roulette, lansquenet, rouge et noire, rondo, tan, fan-tan, seven-and-a-half, twenty-one, hokey-pokey, or any banking or percentage game played with cards, dice, or any device, for money, checks, credit, or other representative of value, and every person who plays or bets at or against any of those prohibited games, is guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be punishable by a fine not less than one hundred dollars ($100) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six months, or by both the fine and imprisonment.

Although I wonder if this is just one of those games that they only makeup at the end of the year if absolutely necessary for playoff purposes. One thing about the Selig era is that he tries like the Dickens to get every reg season game in whether it matters in playoff seedings or not -- so I'd be surprised if they simply wrote the game off with two months still to go. I suppose a doubleheader on one of those 4 dates at the end of August is the most likely scenario. The Mets and Marlins also have a mutual off day on September 8 but that's immediately following a 3 game series between the two teams in Miami. I would have to re-read the CBA but I'm not sure they can play a makeup game after the regular season is over unless it is potentially playoff-determinative.

  17. G-Fafif wrote: Jeromy Burnitz hit seven home runs from April through August of 2002 and then slugged seven in September, and it pissed me off more than it energized me. This is to say late-season tears on futile teams are to be greeted with a dose of circumspection -- especially those rendered by tepidly performing veterans with the initials J.B. Then he played well enough the next season to be tradeable, and we now have Mike Nickeas as a result. I could live with that from Bay.
  18. Rained out, per Justin Turner twitter.
  19. They still shoot them in the 5th inning.
  20. Capuano 2 Pagan 1.25 Acosta 1 Parnell 1 Reyes 1 Duda 1 Hairston .75 Paulino .5
  21. This one was pretty atrocious. Turner's play was to home and he is rightfully the goat (even if he got the 1 out, the game would probably still be tied), but as Lunchbucket rightfully said, walking and hitting guys with a 1 run lead in the 9th doesn't lead to good things and Isringhausen has a lot to answer for. I'm sure we all would like Isringhausen to get that 300th save but we are playing for the future here and I see no reason why Parnell shouldn't be closing games to get experience in that role, for whatever that's worth. --- On a side note, at the end of the last homestand, I was struck by how, following the seventh inning stretch Mr. Met and the "Party Patrol" just stood around, clapped and waved to the fans. I knew something was "off" about it but it took me a second to realize that what they are usually doing at that point is throwing and shooting T-Shirts into the crowd. Since it was a one-time thing, I thought: maybe they ran out of shirts. Maybe they forgot to fill the CO2 canisters for the t-shirt guns. Yet tonight, the same thing happened. Given the Mets' financial situation, I don't think it's unfair to ask if they stopped shooting t-shirts in the 7th inning because they're too cheap to do it twice a game.
  22. By that point, the Mets had better be owned by some unburdened-by-Picard Wilpons or by Einhorn. Either way, they pay the $30 million. It's not a "difficulty" unless we have cheapskate ownership.
