He's halfway when he realizes and starts retreating. Murphy runs at him, and as he gets close, glances to third a little too long, which gives the runner an opportunity to dive back to first safely. You also forgot that instead of making a normal, overhand throw to Turner at first, Murphy flipped it sideways like a moron. To answer your question earlier, YES, people DO know what do to in that situation because they practice it. Rundowns and having runners hung up on the bases is indeed practiced and Murphy just fucked up, plain and simple. Hitting aside, he's not a good baseball player.
  2. Ruben, I'll never forget your walkoff double against John Axford last September that made a memorable game in an otherwise forgettable month of Mets baseball. But I still want him playing every day and I don't see that happening here. I get your point that Collins won't give Reyes a day off but then it becomes Sandy's job to tell Terry that he's not getting Tejada until September and to freaking play Turner there one day already.
  3. Times must be shaking things up. My education writer buddies are not too thrilled by this other Times transaction: Schwarz jumps sports beat for education at NYT Not too thrilled that the Sports guy is on the education beat? Or for the competition? Schwarz is also a distinguished writer but to keep this on topic, I remember him as writing the article that years ago first made me aware of one R.A. Dickey.
  4. I was never overly enamored by Waldstein. One of these guys that never really impacted me and occasionally i saw something he wrote and was rarely wowed. eh, let him go. New guy looks youngish. Fresh blood could be good. You should have paid more attention (you might have noticed that he's not exactly a geezer himself). In addition to being an outstanding writer he was very good at writing interesting stories that nobody else of the beat had. Just a few examples off the top of my head: Beltran and how he listens to his bats The now-deceased Bullpen toolchest Capuano and Beato's pickoff moves Bobby V's impact on Reyes
  5. Sure. Except Wright or Turner are fine for half a game or a full game in an emergency. Reyes is an everyday player and unless he's hurt, there's no reason to have a backup shortstop on the roster unless they can contribute in other ways (ie. a useful bat, which Tejada is not). I also see no reason to deprive Tejada (or Turner) of regular playing time.
  6. If it's a day off that Reyes needs, and this Thursday isn't enough, then I think Turner or Wright are sufficient. I see no reason to bring Tejada back unless Reyes needs multiple days off.
  7. This really blows. This is not the first time the NY Times has moved a good beat reporter from the Mets to the MFYs. Same thing happened to Ben Shpigel a couple of years ago and Buster Olney years before that. Looks like Shpigel got moved to the NY Jets beat.
  8. Nick Evans was sent down when Wright was activated off the DL. He has to be in the minors 10 days before returning (which is why he is not here yet) but is the logical replacement for Beltran on the roster (rather than Nickeas).
  9. Hmmmmm. Interesting counter-example. Counsell at least had value (2.8 WAR) as recent as 2009. You'd have to add together Cora's 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 seasons just to get that much value (and don't ask about the other years not mentioned).
  10. So does Ryota Igarashi in the Sunday, 7/31 game.
  11. Hairston 4 Niese 1 Igarashi 1 Beato 1.67 Byrdak .33
  12. Nice play (not quite Keith-esque) gets the lead runner at first but they've still got the winning run on second base.
  13. ....AND we're gonna flush this one with a crappy outing by Parnell here.
  14. Wow. Big game for Scott so far. Too bad nobody else on our team is interested in getting a big hit.
