  1. Ball is dead upon calling of a balk. Rule 5.06 ©(3). IF a balk had been called, Granderson gets second base free and clear; no opportunity to advance additional bases. I agree with Edgy's interpretation that the absence of a fielder does not mean that the base was unoccupied.
  2. I'd use deGrom to run for Cuddyer.
  3. Ronnie really giving it to Lagares for that baserunning blunder on the bloop.
  4. Familia certainly deserves to be on the team over some of the token selections (ie. Jonathan Papelbon). Among the five final-vote candidates, I think a good argument could be made that Carlos Martinez of the Cardinals is the most deserving. (Except for the fact that he plays for the Cardinals).
  5. The lone Mets representative. Voted in on the player ballot. Familia is one of the five "final vote" candidates.
  6. Rubin reporting Cecillani was demoted.
  7. Gary said he "passed all the tests" and is fine, back home in New York. Reading between the lines, seems like it was probably chest pain/suspected heart attack. Glad to hear he's doing well.
  8. Statement from WOR: The Mets' flight en route to Los Angeles yesterday landed in Detroit to allow WOR Mets radio play by play voice Howie Rose to see a doctor after feeling ill on board. Although he is feeling better, due to the lengthy travel, doctors have advised Howie to rejoin the team upon their return to New York next week.
  9. Expectations are not the same thing as predictions. My expectation is that the Mets will field a team that annually has a legitimate shot of making a run deep into the playoffs. The team has not lived up to my expectations since...about 2010. My prediction was that they would not do so this year. That prediction has also been accurate since...about 2010.

  11. Edgy MD wrote: There's about a dozen scary hitters left in this pitching-dominant era, and 30 teams have to find a way to make up their lineups with what's left. Fair point. They should go acquire one or more of those hitters. The cash saved by not paying Murphy will help; we can certainly find another marginal player at a much lower cost if we need to replace Murphy.
  12. Wait, what exactly about Murphy is "appealing?" The stupid errors on the basepaths, the mediocre defense, or the fact that he's only marginally better than the minor-league players in the lineup now? Murphy was a valuable player when he was being paid $500k a year. He's definitely overpaid now at $8M, he's on the wrong side of 30 and he's already had injury problems this year. There's no possible justification for bringing him back.
  13. Murphy WAR: 2009: 1.6 2011: 3.0 2012: 1.5 2013: 1.8 2014: 1.9 That's a good bench player. Not a starter, and certainly nowhere near $15 million. I wouldn't risk the qualifying offer.
  14. For Seawolf (and anyone else like me going): Foo Fighters reaffirmed that their North American tour dates are going forward as scheduled. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/foo-fighters-tour-2015-update/
  15. This may also be a defensive upgrade as well.
  16. Steven Matz, 999
  17. Josh Lewin clearly keeping tabs on this thread, introducing Logan Verrett as #998 all-time.
  18. Right, but I am coming around to your argument that Alderson has done only a fair-to-poor job and needs to take a lot of the blame here. Yes, we all can agree that a Dodgers-like transformation isn't possible with the Wilpons as owners and with Selig/Manfred burying their head in the sand. But Alderson still hasn't done anything useful to upgrade the offense, even with whatever resources he does have.
  19. I count maybe 4 major league regulars in that lineup.
  20. Time to close this as the game is quickly approaching. Jose Bautista and Jonny Gomes are the other two.
  21. We probably need a split on this topic...but I recall Howie doing a few SNY games in 2006(?) when Gary had some sort of surgery (maybe an appendectomy?) Kevin Burkhardt of course did play-by-play when Gary was absent from 2007-2014. When Howie was away for hockey, Josh took over the lead radio role and Wayne Randazzo filled in as #2.
