  1. =smg58 post_id=34245 time=1585407670 user_id=62] =seawolf17 post_id=34209 time=1585333577 user_id=91] Just *five* rounds for the draft? What the heck?
  2. I also only do the GM thing until the playoffs, playing each game is too tedious and I like making the moves.
  3. So, the new Out of the Park Baseball 21 is out, I haven't bought it yet as I mostly recently purchased OOTP 19 and there just arent enough changes/new features year over year to justify paying for what is essentially a roster update (ditto Madden which i'll buy for PS4 once every few years). But I was wondering who here plays, and if we had enough people to get some sort of online league going?
  4. =MFS62 post_id=33730 time=1584668056 user_id=60] They are staying together to train while other teams have disbanded/gone home. While there will be a few weeks/ games for the other teams to get in shape, I fear they will come roaring out of the gate when baseball resumes and jump to an early lead in their pennant race. The bastages. Later
  5. Edgy MD wrote: I'm kind of both bearish and bullish on Teeb right now. I think he will appear as a big leaguer, but with virtually no success. But as noted above, anybody can fall into a signature moment. Born in The Phillipines (sorry, I guess he can't ever be President), Tim Tebow is going to play for their WBC team in the qualifiers next month. The chances of him being successful long term are beyond slim, but I just think he'll do something - just one damn thing - that will have us remember him as more than the sideshow. Also, he reportedly turned down the XFL to go to spring training, so his heart is in it.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Having previously mentioned Cordell on page 1 of this thread, I'm claiming him both as my dark horse candidate and also as my personal discovery. And the fact that I had never heard of him until about 20 minutes prior to my earlier post in no way detracts from my taking the credit for any and all highlights in his career going forward. that is 20 minutes sooner than the rest of us.
  7. Crazy Dark Horse prediction: TIM TEBOW comes up in September and crushes a pinch-hit game winning homer in extra innings, which turns out to be his first - and last - hit in MLB.
  8. I also haven't read the contracts. Do they actually prohibit the activities? I would guess they only convert the contract to non-guaranteed money if the player suffers an injury because of the activities.
  9. maybe he can get put on the "David Wright Plan" where insurance reimburses Wilpon for his contract but that money doesn't get funneled back into payroll?
  10. .280/.350/.410, 3rd in the ROY vote. No, wait, that is the guy we traded for him. I'll predict a whole bunch of time on the DL and "small sample size" for stats.
  11. Curious, this general "aw, this is charming" vibe to the discussion about it... compared to the what-a-fuckup perception surrounding Yoenis' adventures in the Boar Wars.... Because Bumgarner didn't sustain season ending injuries while roping? Not that this would be the most logical rationalization. Well, the club doesnt care if you are violating the contract until you get hurt doing so. Jeff Kent can ride his motorcycle all day long until an injury occurs.
  12. Keith Law, now spreading his egotism over at The Athletic, has 2 Mets in his Top 50. Matt Allan is also at #92 and Brett Baty at #95. Just don't look up at who #8 is. [This is behind a Paywall] https://theathletic.com/1627163/2020/02/24/keith-laws-top-100-prospects-for-2020/https://theathletic.com/1627163/2020/02/24/keith-laws-top-100-prospects-for-2020/ 17. Ronny Mauricio, SS, New York Mets Mauricio signed with the Mets in 2017 for $2.1 million, then the largest bonus the team had ever given a player in the international free-agent market, and made his full-season debut less than two years later at age 18. He was the youngest regular in the Sally League last year — the only qualifying position player in the league born in 2001 — and held his own against older competition, finishing above the league median in batting average and contact rate, although he also had a ground ball rate of nearly 53 percent. Mauricio is a very athletic shortstop who's already above-average at the position, while at the plate, he has lightning in his hands, and has power that he hasn't gotten to yet because he's still so young and because he's putting the ball on the ground too often. I don't think it's entirely in his swing, but he will need to try to get underneath the ball more consistently to get to his 25-plus HR ceiling. A shortstop with this kind of bat speed who can already make contact against pitchers two to four years his senior has huge potential, and could easily be a top 5 prospect in a year with a solid showing in High A. 48. Francisco Alvarez, C, New York Mets Alvarez signed with the Mets in 2018 for $2.7 million, breaking Ronny Mauricio's franchise record, and debuted at age 17 in the Gulf Coast League, where he went 12-for-26 with 4 doubles and 2 homers in 7 games … so the Mets promoted him. Few 17-year-olds play anywhere in short-season ball outside of the complex leagues, aside from the occasional mid-August promotion. Alvarez was the only 17-year-old to get a plate appearance in the Appy League in 2019, yet he still hit .282/.377/.443 with a walk rate over 11 percent and strikeout rate of just 22 percent, both better than the league median. He has a great swing, arguably the best in the Mets' system, with very strong hands; he makes a deliberate, quick move back, and then his hands explode forward, with a hard swing that already produces hard contact. He's a catcher, average overall, best at blocking of all the catching skills. A player who can stay back there and has this kind of average/OBP/power potential has enormous, MVP type upside. He'll play this whole year at 18, probably in Low A, and we'll get an even better measure of just how advanced he is.
  13. Lefty Specialist wrote: MLBPA would have reflexively fought any player sanctions. That's why Manfred didn't even try. He wanted this swept under the rug as quickly as possible and not dragged out by players fighting back. Just my .02. Now players on other teams may make it a bigger mess anyway, but I'm willing to bet that any player on an opposing team would have gone along with the scheme if they were an Astro. That's why I don't really buy the high dudgeon from other position players. Pitchers, though, they have a right to be pissed. Yes & Yes. Furthermore, while it may be a PR disaster, it is better that Manfred did not choose to "punish players" and then fight the arbitration and possibly court battle for disciplining employees for completely undefined on-field behavior as it would have set a bad precedent when MLB lost that fight. Better to send a memo about cheating to everyone now laying out all the shit you can't do and the penalties going forward. sure pitchers should be pissed. but if the pitchers had concocted a cheating scheme where club interns dressed in white t shirts all run around the stadium to stand in the "batters eye" during the top of the inning, they'd have all have loved it too.
  14. Also the damn replay thing. I mean come on. These challenges are literally what lead to the sign stealing thing. And now they're worried it's taking too long. I love replay existing, i think it's important and good to get things right, but the challenge idea is dumb and just get it right. Different rant. But why not put in a 5 second delay to these feeds? Hell 3 may do it. "Here's a live feed of the catcher's signs!", "Hey guys, stop using the live feed to get the opposing teams signs! stop it!" "Man, I can't believe the Astros managed to get the signs." how about "no fucking in game video" except for MLB employees? if a call doesnt seem "obvious" enough to challenge with the naked eye in real time on the field then lets PLAY BALL and not challenge it.
  15. yeah they're losing 50 million... which includes a well-below market TV deal, parking and concessions fees somehow going directly to Wilpon's pockets, overpaid Wilpon and Katz family members permeating the organization, merchandising handled by "JeffWilp Inc." etc. I dont trust their books at all.
  16. Some of these really suck but others are good- -Three Batter Minimum - More 'David Wright vs scrub lefty'? check. Less mound visits and time wasted on pitching changes? check. While I don't like the artificial constraint on strategy, this one seems like it could have positive effects. Ceetar said he thinks it makes game longer but I'm not buying that, maybe it replaces 5 minutes of pitching change with 5 minutes of an extra at-bat from higher expected offensive output against opposite handed pitching? that is a good trade off. -26 Man roster - I'm SHOCKED MLB didn't wait to use this as a bargaining chip in the next CBA instead. I have no issue with this. -MUST carry 28 in September - I like this one a lot. I never liked that teams would have a variable number of guys between 25 and 40 in September and the number of extra scrub relievers available was insane. If the Mets are in a playoff race against the Braves, I wouldn't want to see the 35-man Braves facing the 26-man Marlins either. good rule change. -13 pitchers - dumb. build your roster how you want. and Ceetar hit the nail on the head here - everyone please welcome our newest "two-way player", the Marlins' best reliever looking like Todd Hundley in left field in September.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: Managers will now have up to 20 seconds to challenge a replay instead of 30 Still 10 or 15 seconds too many ... but it's a start. Or at least it will be if they decide to, y'know, actually enforce the rule every now and then. And does it say anything about a change in the number of challenges or does Mattingly still get 8 per game? The whole challenge thing is ridiculous, when, if you are out of challenges, you can still nicely ask the umpires if they'll review it for you--and they do it! In the new XFL football league there are no coaches' challenges, there is a replay official who decides when to stop and take a look. could you have a guy back at MLB headquarters in NY? or maybe just let the umps themselves say "hey that was a bang bang play and i'd like to see that again"?
  18. Seinfeld should be able to do this himself with financing and some silent partners, right?
  19. Good for him. He has every right to keep his politics to himself. Politics have become a source of toxicity in other areas of life.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Deserves it's own thread. He sure was what you'd like a baseball citizen to be, though he sure could have gotten off the fence in 2016. huh?
  21. There are plenty of better things the Mets could do with the money that they aren't spending, but I didn't say "I'd take Arenado for McNeil versus signing Cole", I said I'd do Arenado for McNeil, without consideration of other potential moves.
  22. First, it should be the writer who didn't vote for Jeter, not that. You don't know that, unless you are sure that all baseball writers are people. And if you think that is true, I give you Exhibit A: Anthony Rieber
  23. Class Act.
  24. I'd love to get Arenado, I think his defense, and the Mets need for defense in general, is being severely underrated here. I'd trade McNeil straight up because he doesnt have a position (well, other than the one that Cano is needlessly occupying)
