  1. if the owners say they'll lose money for every game why do they want to play at all? Why didn't Manfred invoke the part of the CBA that lets him cancel all salaries?
  2. OOPS! can someone please merge my post in there and delete this?
  3. ...That never played together. [this is behind the paywall] https://theathletic.com/1803511/2020/05/26/whats-the-best-lineup-you-can-build-with-mets-who-never-played-with-each-other/https://theathletic.com/1803511/2020/05/26/whats-the-best-lineup-you-can-build-with-mets-who-never-played-with-each-other/ The premise of this article by Tim Britton: ... Stealing a page from Corey Masisak, our Devils writer, what's the best lineup we can build with Mets who never played with one another? First, I ditched Corey's loophole in which he was gauging players by their entire careers and not just their stint with the Devils. Look, an outfield of Ashburn, Snyder and Mays with Robbie Alomar on the infield would be pretty damn good — but it's not really Mets, as it were. Second, I'm only in this for nine guys. The rest of the rotation, the bullpen and a bench? Come on. ... So what do you got? Tim has a few examples and some fans put more in the comments section, but don't cheat! My first shot at this, I tried to stick to guys with shorter tenures to avoid locking myself out of entire eras with one guy, but there has to be a lot of room for improvement here... Seaver's 1983 return is a killer as you can't put him with Keith or Strawberry - since my knowledge of the 60's and 70's is pretty limited my initial plan was to start with Seaver and build a modern hitting team. I filled SS last with slim pickings. C: Gary Carter (1985-1989) 1B: John Olerud (1997-1999), only a Met for 3 years he fit the team without overlapping too many people. The downside is he overlaps with the Mets' best Catcher (Piazza) and Second baseman (Alfonzo) 2B: Jeff McNeil (2018-2019) SS: Eddie Bressoud (1966) 3B: Jeff Kent (1992-1996) LF: Steve Henderson (1977 - 1980)* CF: Carlos Beltran (2005-2011) RF: Curtis Granderson (2014-2017) SP: Tom Seaver (1967 - 1977, 1983)* *Traded for each other, Seaver and Henderson were never teammates.
  4. former Met Pat Mahomes played high school basketball, reportedly turning down college scholarships to play baseball - his younger son is playing now too and pictures are available. But good luck finding anything by google searching Pat Maholmes, who shares a name with his now more famous QB son.

  9. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brownke01.shtmlhttps://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brownke01.shtml Kevin Brown. 19 years with many teams. His numbers remind me of Jack Morris. Not a compiler, just that Maddux type good as I recall his numbers destroy Morris' on a per game bass, though Morris did pitch 500+ more innings As lunch said, I best remember him for the contract (highest paid pitcher at the time and the first to get a 100 mil deal if i reccall?) - how much money a guy made or didnt make shouldnt play one iota into his hall chances though, unless this is the "negotiating hall of fame"

  11. =ashie62 post_id=36776 time=1589320090 user_id=90] I find it hard to imagine more than a few thousand fannies in the seats. So, the economic viability of the baseball business is at stake
  12. Edgy MD wrote: What really stings at different levels, in different cases, for teams and players and owners is all the guys who aren't playing out the last year of their contracts. Personally, I think it's fine if guys who are pre-free-agency get some or all of a season of service time added to their ledgers, but I'd be happy to see every player who has reached the free-agency portion of his career get a one-year extension at AAV rates. I think all the players should get a choice between getting a year of service time and whatever salary they make this year after the 'reductions' are agreed upon (all the pre-free agency guys will want this) OR having their contract get delayed by a year - so if you are 37 and in the last year of a 10/mil year deal you may say "no thanks, i'll take my 10 mil next year please"
  13. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=36666 time=1589090878 user_id=68] I recommend that you read the entire intro to the article, if you haven't, because the excerpt posted at the top of this thread doesn't quite explain what the author is shooting for.
  14. I'm all for attacking Jeter, but he seems no more or less guilty of steroid use than the average player who played in that time period. Are we keeping 1995-2004 out of the hall?
  15. well, there are credible domestic violence claims in Bonds history, but it's not like the media cares about that either. I didn't even know about that! But yeah, they care more that he wouldn't sit down with them for an interview than they do if he beat a woman.
  16. to my knowledge, there are no allegations against schilling for being a user. maybe i'm wrong, or misremember. assholes and racists have always been allowed into the hall. the voters have sometimes not liked voting for them, but being an asshole is not the reason that bonds is getting blockaded. the character clause being invoked is a new thing in the steroid age. show me the actual historical precedent. But Bonds was an asshole to the wrong people - THE MEDIA! He was always nice to the fans. But the fans don't write the articles everyone reads about Bonds "Steroids" are the ONLY reason to keep him out. Lumping him in with Clemens for the way he treated people is just wrong.
  17. Cora was, however, suspended for 2020 due to his role in the Astros scandal. MLB's findings were that a single video room operator who was helping baserunners steal signs with video (which is legal if you are looking at old video just not video from the current live game?) updated his findings with live game footage. some players knew about this but not all and nobody but him took any actual actions to further the plot. the front office and managers didnt know.

Well, at least Wilpon got to sell concessions for a couple of hours before they cancelled! Localized radar back then wasnt what it is today, I feel like the fans waiting in the stadium for an eventual rainout is a less frequent occurrence.

  20. I agree Dodgers to Vero Beach would be the most "fun" move, but Indians or Reds make more sense as far as playing games when your fans can more easily watch. Universal DH would be a hard pill to swallow because you know it would soon become permanent.

Edgy MD wrote: Check out MLB, seeing opportunity in crisis. • Implementing an electronic strike zone to allow the plate umpire to maintain sufficient distance from the catcher and batter Going nuclear on replacing ups with tech! • No mound visits from the catcher or pitching coach Going nuclear on the pace-of-game policies. Backdooring that strike zone in there is awesome. and i always hated mound visits from the dugout - i'm fine with the catcher needing to get on the same page but they shouldnt need coaching midgame.
