I think a GG centerfielder with a 90 OPS+ is useful... but not worth losing a 1st round draft pick for or signing to a long term deal. if he wants 2 years, maybe 3, and the mets win the fight on the pick, thats awesome. if not, keep looking. as for the rule the leter seems clearly against the Mets while the intent seems in their favor. i'm too lazy to look this up but does the CBA have an official clause regarding its interpretation?
instead of finding a way to shoe-horn guys who cant play there into SS or carrying both a backup catcher and a backup shortstop who cant hit with only 3 more bench players who can, why not eschew the 12th pitcher in favor of Lutz or someone like Lutz?
According to Jason Stark, Musial was one of only two players (the other was Ted Williams) to hit 400+ HRs and walk more than twice the number of times he struck out.

And play he will per Alderson today. Sandy all but concedes Wheeler & D'Arnaud will start in AAA and that in general Sandy is not happy with where the team is today, especially in the OF... http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/59933/alderson-not-happy-with-2013-prep Alderson toots his own horn a bit too, and seemingly rubs it in Toronto's face how well everyone thinks the Mets made out in the trade: Alderson wrote: Alderson offered an interesting tidbit on dArnaud. The GM said he wanted two prospects from an unspecified team (probably Texas) for R.A. Dickey. That team declined the request. Once dArnaud was acquired from the Jays, that team offered the same two players for the catching prospect straight up -- meaning the Mets could have had Noah Syndergaard and Wuilmer Becerra from Toronto plus the two other prospects for Dickey in all, if the Mets were willing to part with the newly acquired dArnaud. Now at that point everybody had fallen in love with Travis, so we werent going to do that, Alderson said.
I really wouldn't mind being up there next summer for Piazza/Maddux. Fuck the writers. Will cooperstown be a ghosttown that weekend now? Does the veterans comittee add anyone? Will there be any kind of ceremony?
Anyone can win it once they make the playoffs, so look for the team with the longest odds that you think can win their division. I really like the White Sox at 30-1. If Detroit falters I think the Indians/Royals/Twins all still suck. In looking at the other teams with similar odds Milwaukee and Arizona probably both have TWO better teams in their respective divisions while the Rays/RedSox/Orioles at 28-1 have each other, even if the Yankees AND Blue Jays falter.

The tomahawk chop is another matter. Don't make me go find that jewish chief wahoo picture from last time this came up. Very surprised by the Braves' decision here though. The tomahawk itself would look fine and we don't need the chop. I LOVE the Mets hat. Will definitely be buying one. Orioles still have the best hat. There are some real boring ones that I can't imagine will inspire any sales too, like Cleveland.
Santana is old, if there is a good offer, take it. The refusal to accept that your team should be in rebuilding mode led to a decade of Knicks suckitude, I don't care to repeat the experience.
You read my mind SS as I saw the state of the poll and was scrolling down to lament the lack of love for Goldeneye, my favorite Bond movie (AND a great game on the old Nintendo 64)
Didn't Reyes get hurt right around the trading deadline? The Mets may have seen the compensation pick as more valuable than whatever they were offered at the time
I like it. I like it even more if 10 months from now we're talking about how d'Arnaud was robbed of his rightful ROY trophy only by the Mets leaving him down until June 1st while the Blue Jays have just won the AL East and the Yankees have lost a 1-game wildcard game as the higher-seeded wildcard and that Yankee management is privately (to the newspapers) claiming the 1-game thing is "unfair" as they lose to an 83 win Royals team. this could be win-win!
I've heard it said top shelf college baseball is close to AA competition wise. If true Harvey has been right on target. I dont think thats true at all. While there may be some players capable of playing in AA, the overall level of competition is probably akin to the lowest levels of the US minors or the equivalent of the NY-Penn league. there will be a wider variety of talent though than there is at any given minor league level with the college players ranging from guys who are ready for AA to guys who wouldnt make hte first cut in minor league spring training camps.
50-70% of a season at AAA for a 23 year old doesnt seem like "rushing" to me, its about where i'd expect it to be, though a little longer would be just as defensible.
