  1. My feelings about the UMDB vary depending on whether it's the season or the offseason. This time of year I pretty much ignore it and the thought of starting up again seems to be more trouble than it's worth. But once the season gets underway I start to enjoy it a bit more. But yeah, if and when I do shut it down, we'll certainly come up with a way to preserve your numbers data. Maybe someone else would even want to take on the whole thing. But this is premature. Chances are I'll keep it up for at least a few more years.

  3. Is it... Marlene Dietrich?
  4. This is one of two polls that are currently tied. Only twelve votes in so far, so hopefully the remaining voters will tip the balance one way or the other.
  5. Uh oh... still tied. We went from 6-6 to 8-8. Anyone else care to vote? Anyone who's already voted care to reconsider?
  6. I usually would vote for the good news cover over the bad news cover, but I'm swayed by JCL's argument the other day that a bad news cover is more representative of the 2017 season. Also, FULL SPEED AHEAD is just a spring training cover, so it carries less weight. I voted BLUNDER.
  7. The Mets have shopped Matt Harvey, but it’s unclear if Pittsburgh is interested in the 28-year-old. Harvey for McCutchen? Hmmmm... I think I'd be okay with that!
  8. Winner of Round 1.0.3 Winner of Round 2.4.2 FULL SPEED AHEAD Newsday, March 15, 2017. In spring training, Jacob deGrom appears to be recovered from his season-ending 2016 injury. Winner of Round 1.0.7 Winner of Round 2.4.1 GOD OF BLUNDER New York Daily News, May 1, 2017. Perhaps Noah should have had that MRI after all.
  9. We're having trouble booking people for the ceremony. We're still working on getting Maja to attend.
  10. We'll be taking another break as we wait for the voting for the third-round polls to complete. When this round is done, we'll have our Final Four, and semi-final voting will take place on January 15. If all goes according to schedule, we'll be revealing our winning cover on January 29 in Stockholm!
  11. MR 300 is getting a strong challenge from IN THE BIG INNING. We're currently tied. If you haven't voted yet, please be sure to do so!
  12. I think they're selfish. They don't want to give up the prestige of owning a major league team even though they're not able to run it as it deserves. I suggest that we get someone to sneak into Fred Wilpon's bedroom and whisper into his ear while he's asleep. "Fred... You can't take it with you. You're 82 years old. Remember 1986? Wouldn't it be great to win another World Series before you go? One where you wouldn't have to share the spotlight with that Nelson guy?" Or instead of a Fred Whisperer, maybe we can hire a hypnotist?

The other 4 are #9 Minnie Minoso, #19 Billy Pierce, #3 Harold Baines and #14 Paul Konerko. While I prefer to be stingy with retired numbers, I don't necessarily think that induction in Cooperstown should be a requirement. I'd be in favor of the Mets retiring David Wright's number, and his Hall of Fame chances have become extremely thin.

Virtually a career ALer https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/buehrma01.shtml I see he put in a lot of years, and pitched a lot of innings, for the White Sox but his numbers definitely don't look retirement-worthy to me. I think retired numbers are becoming seriously devalued. I'm glad the Mets have showed restraint.
  15. Wow! I don't even know who Mark Buehrle is.
  16. I don't know. I have a feeling that they'll end up with some stupid "marketable" name, like "Spaghetti Thumpers" or something like that.
  17. You said "sliding pond!" I haven't heard that term since I was a kid. Is it a Long Island thing? I think most people call it a "slide". I used to wonder why we called it a "sliding pond". Maybe we were just mispronouncing "slide-upon"?
  18. Cuomo: Syracuse Chiefs will become Syracuse Mets in 2019 Chiefs General Manager Jason Smorol, asked about Cuomo's speech, would confirm only that the team will change its name in 2019 when the Mets move their Triple-A affiliate from Las Vegas to Syracuse. He would not disclose the new name. "We'll have more to say about it later," Smorol said. "I don't think right now is the time to delve into that. When we're ready to make the official announcement, we'll make the official announcement.''
  19. Winner of Round 1.0.4 Winner of Round 2.3.2 IN THE BIG INNING New York Post, April 4, 2017. The Mets get 2017 off to a good start with a six-run seventh inning in their 6-0 Opening Day win over the Braves. Winner of Round 1.0.12 Winner of Round 2.3.1 MR. 300 New York Daily News, June 15, 2017. Curtis Granderson hits his 300th career home run in a win over the Cubs.
  20. I'd let Harvey drift away. No offer of an extension. Focus instead on deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, Wheeler, Gsellman, and Lugo. And Montero too, I guess. There's no guarantee that you'll find four or five solid starters among them, but Harvey seems the least likely to succeed. I really doubt that he'll ever be what he was. Maybe he can reinvent himself some day as a crafty old lefty, but in order to do that, he'd have to start by learning to pitch left-handed.
  21. I liked the cards much better when the production values were lower.
  22. My favorite years in which the Mets didn't win the pennant would probably be, in order, 1985, 1999, and 2006. And then 1988, I guess. That 1999 post-season made me feel like a kid again. And the 2015 post-season did the same. So much fun.
  23. I could see Curtis being what Rusty Staub was in 1984 and 1985, but with the 17-man pitching staff, there's no longer room for such players.
  24. Winner of Round 1.0.15 Winner of Round 2.2.2 ALL ABOARD! Newsday, August 14, 2017. The Mets look ahead, with misguided optimism, to the four-game series against the Yankees. Winner of Round 1.0.14 Winner of Round 2.2.1 THANK YOU CARDS Newsday, July 21, 2017. A walk-off single by Jose Reyes gives the Mets a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals at Citi Field.
