  1. That is an interesting article. It's been said that Boras always relies on finding "one dumb owner" each season. If, as the article suggests, the age of dumbness is over, then he'll have to find a new methodology. And if this plays out as Verducci suggests, it doesn't mean that player's careers will be shorter, just that they'll have shorter-term contracts, and earn less money, as they get deeper into their thirties and become less productive. There have surely been many cases where a team has paid an older player for his past productive seasons spent in another organization. It had to be only a matter of time before it became clear that this doesn't make much sense.
  2. Baseball cards were more fun when nobody ever expected that they'd be worth more than a penny each.
  3. Conforto can also go on the 60-day on February 14, which means three roster spots opening up. I imagine other teams are in a similar situation, so maybe that's when the free agent logjam will begin to loosen up.
  4. It's much better than forcing them to accept a minor league contract. If teams are forced to spend, then some of that money will go to 30-year-old free agents.
  5. I guess they probably didn't value Josh Smoker all that much. I do wonder if they're waiting until February 14 to sign that starting pitcher we've been hoping for. It's a bit of a risk, since there's no guarantee that Cobb and/or Lynn will still be available by then.
  6. I think the more likely solution is a minimum payroll.
  7. This is interesting: As early as February 14, the Mets can place Wright on the 60-day disabled list, which doesn’t count against the team’s 40-man roster. That could be especially crucial this year in light of the extremely slow-moving free-agent market — and the industry-wide roster churn once guys finally start signing — off which the Mets want to capitalize. The Mets chose to trade Smoker, the big, hard-throwing lefty with mediocre results, because they had to make room on their 40-man roster for the re-signing of Jose Reyes. Wright has been occupying one of those cherished roster spots. The roster spot won’t become an issue again until November, when teams must finalize their 40-man rosters in anticipation of the Rule 5 draft. That serves as a de facto deadline for Wright and the Mets to figure out their future. Full article: Roadmap to when David Wright and Mets likely part ways
  8. I remember looking forward to his call up only because he seemed to be the best starter at Las Vegas. I don't think anyone expected him to be the next in the line of Harvey/Wheeler/deGrom/Syndergaard/Matz, and he certainly wasn't. But I'm sure we were hoping that he would provide more than he did. What an awful season 2017 was.

  10. If they do restore the carts, they need to omit the lips and the creepy baseball glove eyes. What would Helene Lazar think?
  11. There was a lot of complaining about how Omar was making the Mets "too Hispanic". I'm sure that there are references to it (if not examples of it) here in our own archives from 2005 and 2006. ON EDIT: Oops, maybe not. Our archives only go back to June 2005, months after Omar signed Beltran and Pedro. I would imagine that the biggest anti-Hispanic backlash would have been during the 2004-05 offseason.
  12. Yeah, I don't think there's any colluding going on. But I do think that the players will be taking a tougher stance in the next CBA. I've heard talk of instituting a minimum payroll for each team.
  13. Yes. That's why I can (sort of) envision a spring training where the players do their workouts and everything, but sit out the games. They'll get in shape, and see live pitching in batting practice and stuff, but the owners would feel the pinch of the canceled games. But I think that there would have to be at least a week's worth of exhibition games before the regular season could start. Maybe a player boycott of spring training games could run until around March 20. That would definitely provide a financial hit.
  14. Whatever happened to Bean Stringfellow? Are the players thinking of boycotting spring training? Or just not playing in the games? I don't care about the games either, but if they don't get played, it will surely delay the start of the regular season, and that I do care about.
  15. I don't know. If I were a reliever, I'd wave off the cart and jog in from the bullpen. I would think that a grown man would be embarrassed to need a ride in a silly buggy for a trip that's about 300 feet in distance.
  16. The Mets are beginning to target second-tier, free agent starting pitchers, such as Lance Lynn, Alex Cobb, and Jason Vargas, SNY contributor and former GM Jim Duquette said Thursday on Mets Hot Stove. Well, if "second tier" means Lynn and Cobb, I'm okay with that. I was afraid that it meant guys the next level down after them. A Lynn or a Cobb would help the team a lot. And I saw that episode of Mets Hot Stove. I don't think that this is a correct interpretation of what Duquette said. I think he said that the Mets should consider Lynn, Cobb, and Vargas, not that the team is targetting them.

  18. Would it really save any significant amount of time? Bullpen carts are fun, but even when I was little, I thought it was silly that a professional athlete would need a ride from the outfield to the pitcher's mound. Shouldn't the outfielders also get an Uber at the end of each inning? Especially a left fielder who has to go to the first base dugout, or a right fielder going to third base.
  19. Sandy pretty much rules out the Mets signing Moustakas. Sandy Alderson narrows Mets’ free-agency options Not especially surprising.
  20. Me too. I'm looking forward to seeing if there's anything to this new improved Juan Lagares.
  21. I do think that the Mets might be reasonably okay at catcher this year. I'd like them to spend their free agent dollars elsewhere, unless (perhaps) the signing of Lucroy leads to a Travis trade that fills some other need.
  22. They had to wait until you moved to Rochester.
  23. If we weren't so terrible at doing book clubs here, this one would be an interesting choice.
  24. He seemed like he enjoyed his time here.
  25. Sorry, Wilmer. At least he gets Rice-A-Roni and Turtle Wax.
