  1. Mickey talks to the Post about some of his in-game strategies: https://nypost.com/2018/03/03/pitcher-batting-8th-mets-manager-reveals-his-in-game-strategies/
  2. I'm thinking games started rather than games played, and voted Gonzalez. My guess is that he'll start about 75 games before the Mets move on from him, and Smith will start the majority of games in the second half, but assorted starts by Bruce and Flores will keep Dom from passing Gonzalez's total.
  3. That sucks. Rusty Staub is definitely one of the all-time Mets, both for his contributions to the 1973 pennant winner and his role as an elite pinch-hitter when he returned in the 1980s. I was at that 18-inning game in 1985 against the Pirates where they kept switching him between left field and right and he made that running catch. Rusty was my favorite Met for a while there when I was nine years old. (That would have been in 1972.) And, last but not least, he's been an enthusiastic supporter of the Tabloid Cover Derby. He graciously agreed to attend the announcement of the second iteration, back in the autumn of 2016.

  5. I had no problem understanding the dialog, but if you have issues understanding African accents, then maybe you should skip it. I remember when I was in Africa, we were on a shuttle with a couple of other people, and although they spoke English, and the driver spoke English, they couldn't understand anything he was saying. It was in the strange position of translating English to English. I can understand where you're coming from. I have similar problems in the Deep South. One time in Alabama, I blew out a tire and we stopped in a repair shop. I couldn't understand what the guy was saying and my wife had to translate. Also, I sometimes have to turn on closed captioning when I'm watching a TV show from the BBC.
  6. Thanks for checking. We'll have to keep an eye out for further news. If he is dead, I'd hate to have him find out about it from us.
  7. I wonder, though, if "disappointment" and "disaster" would have been the words used before the 1969 season. I have a 1969 Sporting News baseball guide, and while that publication is about a review of the previous season rather than a preview of the upcoming one, Jack Lang's article about the 1968 Mets was in fact pretty upbeat.
  8. Does anyone have Street and Smith from that year?
  9. According to Wikipedia (yes, I know) Tommy Joe Moore, who pitched for the Mets in 1972 and 1973 and was sent to St. Louis with Ray Sadecki in the trade that brought Joe Torre to the Mets, died in November. (A UMDB fan told me about it this morning.) I don't want to mark him "dead" in the UMDB with only Wikipedia as a source, but I don't see anything anywhere else. I assume that if G-Fafif considers him to be alive, he probably is.
  10. No matter what happens going forward, I'll always have great admiration for how he played in 2016. He's not the player that Keith Hernandez was, of course, but there was something about his drive and determination that reminded me of Keith. I'm going to be optimistic about Asdrubal's 2018 season: 20 homers, .280.
  11. Or... if he hits 58 homers and drives in 140 runs and is ranked third, it will be a pretty awesome season.
  12. The argument against it has been mentioned above. It's about the stress on the bullpen. You're the only one who brought up "tradition" and the "win statistic".
  13. I wouldn't stick with the starter out of "tradition", but to avoid asking the bullpen for five innings several times a week.
  14. I agree that pulling the starter in the fourth inning (before he has a chance to implode) will turn a few losses into wins. But if it happens frequently, unless there's a 17-man pitching staff it will end up moving the implosion later in the game. I guess there's a tipping point somewhere, where additional shorter starts would be beneficial, but too many of those shorter starts will lead to a bullpen that's dead on its feet. Mickey seems like a smart guy. If he can get this figured out and make it work, then good for him! It would be easier if the Mets had three or four guys who could be trusted to go through the batting order a third time. But as far as I know, they currently only have two. (Does Vargas make three? I don't know.) But Harvey, Wheeler, Matz? They seem to have a way to go in order to get there.

  16. I think you misread me. I certainly wasn't saying that injuries never turn out to be minor. My "when has that ever happened" was a sarcastic reference to injuries becoming more serious than first reported.
  17. And if deGrom starts the fourth or fifth game of the season instead of the first or second, it's no big deal at all. We just have to hope that this doesn't turn out to be more serious than they're saying. (When has that ever happened?).
  18. I agree about pitchers automatically coming out after 18 batters. I hope that it doesn't actually play out that way. It would result in too many four-inning starts and more overuse of the bullpen.
  19. I'm expecting to like him, but it's not unimaginable that I'll change my mind, depending on how things develop. I love what he's saying about bullpen use. As I've said in other threads, this is the kind of thing I've been waiting 20 years to hear a manager say. What will be interesting to see is how Mickey reacts when he uses Familia to successfully get out of a jam in the 7th inning, but then Ramos blows the save and gets a loss in the 9th. Will he stick with the plan, knowing that even good plans don't work 100 per cent of the time, or will he cave in to the outrage and revert to the norm? The answer to that question will strongly influence my opinion of Mickey.
  20. What happened to Myles Straw???
  21. Oh, it's just deGrom and Cespedes. At least it's not anyone important.
  22. I don't think I'm familiar with AJ Griffin. I saw this thread title, and thought of Alfredo Griffin, who happens to be a different person. Alfredo is 60 years old now, and hasn't played a big league game since 1993, so I suppose it's unlikely that he'll ever play for the Mets.
  23. Costas has become insufferable? I haven't heard much of him or McCarver lately to have any opinion on their insufferability, but I've certainly heard that a lot about McCarver. I don't know that I've heard it about Costas.
