  1. ESPN wrote: The New York Mets and starting pitcher Jason Vargas have reached agreement on a two-year, $16 million deal, a source confirmed to ESPN on Friday. The deal, which is pending a physical, includes a club option for 2020, a MLB source told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. The agreement was first reported by FanRag Sports, and the length of the contract was first reported by MLB.com. I wasn't expecting it to be two years.
  2. I do remember that trade with Seattle. I just don't remember Jason Vargas being part of it.
  3. I had completely forgotten that Jason Vargas was once a Met. Traded with Adam Bostick by the Florida Marlins to the New York Mets in exchange for Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom on November 20, 2006. Traded by the New York Mets to the Seattle Mariners with Aaron Heilman, Endy Chavez, Joe Smith, Maikel Cleto, Ezequiel Carrera and Mike Carp in exchange for Sean Green, J. J. Putz and Jeremy Reed on December 11, 2008. He started two games for the Mets in 2007, one in May and one in July. As a Met, he has a 12.19 ERA in 10.1 innings. If he becomes a Met again, that ERA can only come down. I hope!
  4. Hopefully the season itself will be more of a wet hump.
  5. I guess signing him is better than not signing him because he would add a bit of depth that the Mets might ultimately need, but I'd feel much better if they'd set their sights higher.
  6. I assume it means that he won't be cavalier about having guys start to throw. I'm sure that not everyone who warms up will get into a game every time.
  7. I do like his name, though. It's the opposite of this guy's name:
  8. The Daily News reported today that the Mets were discussing a deal as recently as Tuesday that would send Lagares to San Francisco for Joe Panik. The deal doesn't look like it's going to happen, as the Giants would want more than just Lagares and the Mets decided not to go forward. Specific players aside, trading an outfielder for yet another infielder doesn't seem like the best way to balance the roster.
  9. Is that Rick Sweet?
  10. SEEDS OF LIFE was a 2016 finalist, losing in the last round to CES BOOM BAH, 14 to 7.
  11. The Las Vegas outfield was the first category I looked at. I have a feeling that one of them might spend some time in April in Queens.
  12. I'm sure we're all rooting for him. And while I'm not saying that I'll always support him no matter what, I'm also not bracing myself for eventual disappointment.
  13. I acknowledge that things may change drastically, but as of now, knowing what we know so far and seeing what we've seen, and hearing what we've heard, I'm very positive about Mickey Callaway. More so than I was, certainly, about Art Howe or Willie Randolph or Terry Collins. (And Jerry Manuel too, but he's in a different category in that there was no ramp-up period to his time as manager.)
  14. Here's this from Mike Puma today: With the Mets expected to carry only four outfielders, Wilmer Flores and Reyes will both take reps in the outfield this spring. Flores has never played the outfield. Reyes has two career appearances — one inning in center field and 5 1/3 innings in left field. Both came last season. Only four outfielders? I guess that means until Conforto returns?
  15. He's definitely demonstrated that. One of the most impressive things about 2016 was discovering what a warrior Asdrubal Cabrera is.
  16. Yeah, my main memory of him will be his appearance on the 2015 post-season roster, having never yet played in the big leagues.
  17. I read that too quickly, and thought it said that the Mets were looking for a triple-decker centerfielder. I interpreted that as someone who eats tall sandwiches.
  18. Lefty Specialist wrote: Dunno. I see Darvish as a risk they might regret. I assume that they know it's a risk, and that it's one that they're willing to absorb if things don't work out. He'll probably be fine for the first few years. In 2022 and 2023 this might be a bad contract, and I'm sure the Cubs know that.
  19. Jeter, as DiMaggio did, evokes a casual elegance and commands any space he enters, even one this big. I can't help but wonder how he was able to type that without gagging.
  20. My current thought for the Mets is 83 wins.
  21. Bud Harrelson deserves his own thread.
  22. Jeez, no. If Donald Trump bought the Mets I'd really have to rethink my fandom.
  23. He should also wear a wreath of garlic around his neck in case he runs into Mrs. Nimmo.
