  1. Bruce has definitely become more of an albatross than I had anticipated. They keep putting him in the lineup because of that inevitable hot streak that may not be so inevitable. And even if it does come, it will have to be a hell of a hot streak to make up for two solid cold months. Because he's signed through 2020, I don't think he's going anywhere any time soon. I doubt that Alonso would be able to save the 2018 season, so I'd rather see him in Vegas than Queens for now.
  2. I remember the Mets announcers talking about that back during his playing days.
  3. Posting this here in case everybody's not following the mother thread (Introducing the Yearbook Cover Derby)... Today's poll, along with the other three that will be posted tomorrow through Friday, will determine our Final Four.
  4. Baby Met is facing an early 4-to-nothing deficit. Could this be the end? And speaking of lettering, I notice that where the 1970 cover says "NEW YORK METS" it looks similar to the lettering on the Topps baseball cards from the same year.
  5. 1962 Defeated the 2018 cover in Round 1.19 Defeated the 1990 cover in Round 2.01 Defeated the 2002 cover in Round 3.01 1970 Defeated the 2010 cover in Round 1.04 Defeated the 1984 cover in Round 2.04 Defeated the 2011 cover in Round 3.02
  6. Today's poll closings mark the end of the third round. We see another victory for Willard Mullin, but also his very first defeat. The 1974 N.L. pennant cover has bumped Mullin's "You're the Most" 1965 entry from the competition by a vote of 12 to 7. Mullin's 1966 "GO-GO-GO" cover, however, eliminated Bill Gallo's "Recipe for Mets Magic" from 1981, by a count of 14 to 3. Gallo's cover was the last remaining cover from the 1980s. We're now down to eight covers. Our Elite Eight consists of five 1960s covers from Willard Mullin, and three covers from the 1970s: The championship celebration of 1970; the N.L. pennant cover from 1974, and 1976's Bicentennial Mr. Met. Voting resumes tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29. ADVANCING TO ROUND FOUR: ELIMINATED: ADVANCING TO ROUND FOUR: ELIMINATED:
  7. 1964 2000 9-8 1967 1972 11-6 In today's poll closings, the 1964 cover edges 2000 by a count of 9 to 8, and 1967 defeats 1972 11 to 6. We have now established six of our Elite Eight covers. Each of the three most recent decades have been eliminated from the competition. The most recent surviving cover is Bill Gallo's 1981 entry, and that one is poised to be eliminated tomorrow. 8. It seems that they usually stick with the telecast until the first commercial break.
  9. There have been 12 games this year in which Jerry Blevins has faced one and only one batter. He's gotten his batter out 7 times, once on a strikeout. In the other five games, the batter got a hit three times and twice the batter walked. Those are pretty bad numbers, but I actually thought they'd be worse.
  10. Two more polls have closed. 1976 wins the battle of the Mr. Met covers, 15 to 1, and Willard Mullin's 1968 Gil Hodges cover ousts the 1971 cover, 12 to 4. ADVANCING TO ROUND FOUR: ELIMINATED: ADVANCING TO ROUND FOUR: ELIMINATED:
  11. Maybe the Mets can try more Rhame and less Ramos? Have there been any firm updates on Anthony Swarzak? Any chance that he'll be back in the next couple of weeks?
  12. I would too. I'm guessing that the reason that some prefer Bruce is because they feel he needs to play every day in order to get hot again. (And the other, probably unstated reason, is the bias towards giving more playing time to the guy with the higher salary.)
  13. The Post reuses a headline that they, and Newsday, both used back on March 10.
  14. Is he still alive? Maybe we can invite him to stop by!
  15. Third-round polls are beginning to close. Today, the 1962 Baby Met cover completes its comeback victory over 2002's Casey-to-Bobby cover. 2002 had had a 9-6 lead, but four late unanswered votes gave the victory to the toddler in the Mets cap. 2011, the only cover from the current decade to advance out of the first round, with a victory over the 1969 floating heads cover, has lost, 15 to 3, to the cover that celebrates that 1969 season. 1970 advances to the fourth round. 2011 will be eating shrimp in the loser's lounge. 1962 and 1970 will face each other next week, and the winner will advance to the Final Four. 16. Given how the season started, I really thought I'd be able to get to a Mets game this year before I became disillusioned. I probably should have gone in April. 2017 was the first year since 2003 that I didn't attend at least one Mets game. Hopefully I'll be able to motivate myself to get there at least once this year. If I lived in New York I'd certainly go, but since Citi Field is about three hours away it takes a bit more effort.
  17. I enjoyed the spark he provided when he first came up in 1985, but it didn't take long before it became apparent that he was a jerk. Of course I rooted for him, we were trying to win a World Series, after all, but I never liked him. There were a lot of people who liked him because he was a jerk. I can guess who they voted for in 2016.
  18. Centerfield wrote: So stupid. If entitlement is the ugliest part of being a Yankee fan, for Mets fans, it's an undying need to be miserable. I agree. The air of angst within the fan base is something I've never been able to identify with.
